Harborcreek students sign their commitments to US military The program includes the ability to partner with organizations to improve food security in pennsylvania. And the commonwealth is advocating for more businesses to get involved. 'Anybody with a state tax obligation can get tax credits for making contributions. Instead of just paying your tax bill and it going to Harrisburg, you can pick the projects that you want to make contributions to,' said Rick Vilello, deputy secretary of community affairs and development for the PA Dept. of Community and Economic Development. Upcoming Rides for the Rise Motor Music Festival aims to raise money for Erie youth 'Having a program like this that can really open us up to large partners, corporate support, is extremely important,' said Greg Hall, CEO of the Second Harvest Food Bank of NWPA. The governor's office is asking for support of his budget to improve programs like this one. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Local florists facing new challenges ahead of Mother's Day 2025
Local florists are blossoming into superheroes as they scramble to make arrangements for the special mom in your life. The usual holiday rush isn't the only challenge these shops are facing. The new thorn in their side is increased tariffs. Work set to start on massive mixed-use Harborcreek project Mother's Day is quickly approaching, and many people have been preparing to surprise the moms in their lives with the perfect gift. That gift wouldn't be complete without a beautiful, blossoming floral arrangement to make mom happy. 'It's not always about how big you get it's that you got them something, you took time to think about them,' said Darlene Alfieri, the owner of Floral Expressions by Darlene. 'Mom wants to be noticed.' Alfieri and her crew started to prepare for their hundreds of orders last monday. Pioneer Day at local school aims to bring history to life They have to receive, process and hydrate the flowers as well as get vases and other supplies ready. Alfieri has been arranging flowers for years, but said this Mother's Day is different. She didn't expect their usual high demand as she and the rest of the industry had watched prices rise due to tariffs. 'We source as much as we can that is grown here in the us, but that is a very limited amount. Our glassware from China, that's costing us,' Alfieri explained. Close Thanks for signing up! The same goes for Allburn Florist who receive plants from Canada that are shipped through South America. 'And they're hard to figure out because every place has different tariffs. We have been holding our price as best we can, but they fluctuate almost every week,' said Melissa Roberts, manager & wedding specialist for Allburn Florist. On top of Mother's Day, staff at Allburn's is providing arrangements for all three college graduations this weekend as well as some proms. Here at Allburns they've developed a very specific floral assembly line to keep up with their orders. Lawrence Park polling station will not be handicap accessible this election 'I have designers in the back that are solely making beautiful arrangements, then I have counter staff up front. They're wrapping flowers that if you want to take with you and they can tell you how to take care of a plant,' Roberts explained. 'Use a local florist website. You will get a better arrangement, higher quality and more for your money,' Alfieri said. 'When you're ordering on the internet oftentimes you are paying excess fees that don't make it into your arrangement. Call your local florists.' Both shops said that they will be cutting off delivery, so the sooner you have your order in, the better. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Work set to start on massive mixed-use Harborcreek project
Work on a residential and commercial development in Harborcreek Township is set to begin after years of planning the project. It's taken almost three years to get here, but ground should be starting to move soon on a massive mixed-use project in Harborcreek. Large projects scheduled for Harborcreek Twp. in 2025 173 Residential units will be starting to be worked on in Harborcreek Township any day now. 'The Palermo folks were in here a couple of weeks ago and filled out some paperwork to get things ready to go. It looks like they're ready to move. None of these projects are ever easy and certainly don't move quickly, but it looks today like the project is ready to go, and they say they'll be moving dirt and starting to go here soon,' said Harborcreek Township Supervisor Dean Pepicello. According to township land development plans, the Harbor Village Project was granted approval in July 2022. But in the time sense, project estimates have increased. Palermo Realty and Development had planned on spending $40 million on the project. All aboard! Erie's 2025 tall ship season begins, Lettie G. to sail this weekend Friday, Palermo representatives said now, between material, construction, and labor costs, it'll likely be closer to $50 million. Regardless, township representatives said once this comes to fruition, it will fill a massive need for the township. 'We have really nothing like this in the township, this kind of mixed housing with apartments, townhouses and whatnot so that fills a need number one. Number two, the major commercial national developers are always looking for people and they're looking for traffic. This really brings both to this extent. Anytime you add more people, I think the commercial development tends to follow. So number of major developments looking to begin, this is one of them, but it makes a big difference overall,' Pepicello explained. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Similarly, commercial space will also be offered to potential developers towards the entrance to the property. 'It's the modern trend of mixed uses. It's one of the first ones and biggest ones here. This will make a huge difference in this township, we think,' Pepicello went on to say. Lawrence Park polling station will not be handicap accessible this election Construction will happen in multiple phases, but the entire project should be complete by 2027 or 2028.
