Metallica Fans Turn Multiple Classic Albums Into Bestsellers Again
Metallica's Master of Puppets and self-titled release reenter Billboard's Top Album Sales chart ... More after Record Store Day releases disappear. HELSINKI, FINLAND - JUNE 7: James Hetfield of Metallica performs at Helsinki Olympic Stadium on June 7, 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.(Photo by Venla Shalin/Redferns) Last week was huge for album sales in the United States, as Record Store Day preceded the tracking period. Dozens of musicians and bands participated, dropping new albums, live sets, and special editions of popular projects on collectible vinyl. The promotion encouraged fans to visit local shops, support small businesses, and pick up a limited edition release. The week after Record Store Day, the Billboard charts are typically filled with these one-off titles, which often debut high and then quickly vanish. The effects of the music industry initiative are largely gone from the rankings this period, as many classics and continual bestsellers make their way back onto various tallies. Several superstars return to multiple rankings, particularly those based on pure purchases. One of the biggest winners is Metallica, as a pair of the band's full-lengths reappear on the Top Album Sales chart. The list only accounts for pure purchases, and the fact that multiple releases from the act – none of which are new – sold well enough to appear on this roster again underlines the hard rock outfit's appeal. Of the two re-entries, Master of Puppets ranks higher, landing at No. 42 with a little more than 2,200 pure sales, according to Luminate. The self-titled Metallica narrowly makes the cut, appearing at No. 50 with approximately 2,100 copies sold across the U.S. Both albums actually experienced a slight dip in pure sales — less than 5% — from the prior frame. But thanks to a less competitive landscape this week, there was more room for these kinds of longstanding releases to return, even without sales increases. Master of Puppets only appears on the Top Album Sales chart, while Metallica is performing well enough to appear on multiple rankings this week. The self-titled effort climbs to No. 11 on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart, No. 42 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums roster, and it ascends on the Billboard 200 from No. 187 to No. 170. Between the two, Metallica is the higher-rising and longer-charting release on the Top Album Sales list. It has previously reached No. 1 and has now spent 738 weeks on the ranking. Master of Puppets, meanwhile, has racked up 219 total appearances and peaked at No. 7.

Black Sabbath's Classic Album Surges 450% In Sales
Black Sabbath's Paranoid returns to three Billboard charts after a 453% sales spike, thanks to a new ... More limited-edition vinyl reissue from Rhino Records. UNSPECIFIED - CIRCA 1970: Photo of Black Sabbath Photo by MichaelBlack Sabbath may be heading toward the end of its career, but fans are far from finished with the group's music. As frontman Ozzy Osbourne moves closer to retirement – at least when it comes to playing live – and the legendary rock band prepares for what appears to be its final live performance this summer, longtime listeners are snapping up copies of the group's iconic album. While the upcoming concert might be stirring up excitement, it's not the only reason the act is back in a big way. This week, Paranoid makes an impressive return to several rankings in America. The collection sold just over 3,800 copies during the latest tracking period, according to data provided by Luminate, the company that powers the charts for Billboard. That figure is notable for any catalog title – especially one that's been available for decades – but in this case, the jump in purchases is especially striking. Last week, Paranoid sold fewer than 700 copies in the U.S. alone. That means that this time around, sales of the full-length soared by a staggering 453%. The sudden rise in sales is largely tied to a recent re-release of the set. Rhino Records issued a new edition of Paranoid on black vinyl, with the run limited to just 5,000 copies. Each copy was individually numbered, which makes it highly collectible. Thanks to that large uptick in pure purchases, Paranoid reappears on three major U.S. rankings this frame. It nearly breaks into the top 10 on the Vinyl Albums chart, settling at No. 11. It also finds space on the Top Hard Rock Albums list, landing at No. 17. Perhaps even more impressively, the title makes a comeback on the all-genre Top Album Sales chart, where it hits No. 25. Released in 1970, Paranoid helped define the sound of heavy metal – then a new style – and established Black Sabbath as one of the most influential rock bands of all time. The project includes some of the group's most well-known hits, such as 'War Pigs,' 'Iron Man,' and the title track 'Paranoid.' The LP became a commercial juggernaut, reaching No. 1 in the U.K. and breaking into the top 20 in the U.S. At the time, that was a huge deal for the harder side of rock and roll.

Disturbed's Debut Album Is Bigger Than Ever On Several Charts
Disturbed's The Sickness reappears on six Billboard charts, setting new career peaks 25 years after ... More its original release. More than two decades since its release, the band's breakthrough album is still a favorite among a huge number of people, and, occasionally, one of a handful of hard rock titles that can be found on the Billboard charts again. While it's not unusual for catalog titles to see periodic resurgences, this time around, The Sickness isn't just returning, it's hitting new peaks – something that's not commonly seen for projects that have celebrated a twenty-fifth birthday. The legendary hard rock album is back, and it's currently spread out across six different Billboard rankings in the U.S. this week. It's brand new to three of them, and it reappears on another three. Most impressively, The Sickness reaches a new all-time high on nearly every list where it returns. On the Top Hard Rock Albums chart, the collection rises to No. 8, its best placement ever. Over on the Top Album Sales list, it soars to No. 12, marking another career-best for the title. Of the two charts where The Sickness rises higher than ever this week, its tenure on the Top Album Sales list is significantly longer than on the other list. The album has now spent an impressive 106 weeks on that tally. Its history on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart is comparatively brief. The collection has only made three appearances on that ranking in the past, making this week's return even more notable. The Billboard 200 welcomes The Sickness back once again, but this time, it lands far beneath its personal best. The set re-enters the all-genre ranking at No. 151, well below its peak No. 29. In addition to its reappearance on multiple rankings, The Sickness debuts on three Billboard charts. The highest placement among those where it counts as a new arrival comes on the Vinyl Albums list, where it opens at No. 12. The set also scores a solid entrance on the Top Alternative Albums ranking, starting at No. 19. It similarly finds a home on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums tally, coming in at No. 32. Disturbed recently re-released The Sickness once again, adding another version to the album's long list of editions. The latest iteration celebrates the album's twenty-fifth anniversary with additional tracks from that era, and fans have clearly embraced the updated package. In the past tracking week alone, The Sickness sold 6,200 copies across the U.S., according to Luminate. That sum is enough to help it beat many more contemporary titles, which is not a given for a quarter-century-old effort.
