Grief engulfs villages after West Bengal bus tragedy
Motihari: An air of grief and disbelief hangs over Sarsawa village, where six residents, including two women and a minor boy, were among those killed in Friday's bus accident in West Bengal's East Burdwan district.
Since news of the tragedy broke, villagers have gathered at the homes of the bereaved, offering words of comfort and silent support. The wails of mourning echo through the narrow lanes.
At the gate of his thatched home, Hari Paswan sat weeping inconsolably for his wife, Surpati Devi, who had died in the crash. "She promised me she would return safely in three days," he said.
In another home, the mother of Paras Sah grieved with a group of women.
She collapsed twice from shock and grief, having lost her young son. With his death, the family has been left without a breadwinner.
Raju Sahani of Lalbegiya village, who worked as the manager of the ill-fated bus company, has been left devastated by the deaths of his wife, Mira Devi, and their 14-year-old son, Amarjit Kumar. "I have no desire to live on this earth," he said, his face etched with despair. "I have lost everything; life has no meaning now," he said.

For some, the tragedy has also left them in helpless uncertainty. Sumitra Devi recounted how her brother had travelled from Nepal, and, along with her mother-in-law and young daughter, joined the pilgrimage. All three were seriously injured and are now in hospital in Bardhaman. "I have no money to go and see them," she said quietly, her voice barely audible over the sobs around her.
