From 40,000 to 4,000: Massive drop in vehicle thefts over 10 years

KUALA LUMPUR: Vehicle thefts have dropped by 90 per cent over the past decade — from nearly 40,000 cases to around 4,000. Vehicle Theft and Accident Reduction Council of Malaysia (VTAREC) chairman Datuk Lokman Jamaan said data from the insurance industry showed only 4,000 cases were reported last year, a significant decline from the 38,000 cases recorded in 2013. He said in the past, a vehicle was stolen every 15 minutes — but today, it happens only once every two hours, reflecting a significant improvement in prevention efforts. Lokman said the success of the council and its stakeholders in reducing vehicle theft has earned them a new mandate — to help reduce road accidents. "We are pleased to share that VTREC has now been entrusted with another important role — to assist in reducing the rate of road traffic accidents in Malaysia. "In line with this, the name Vehicle Theft Reduction Council of Malaysia (VTREC) was officially changed in the second week of April 2025 to Vehicle Theft and Accident Reduction," he said, during VTREC's 2025 Hari Raya Aidilfitri Celebration and Media Appreciation Ceremony. Lokman also shared hopes that VTAREC, which turns 18 tomorrow (April 30), would continue to achieve greater success for the well-being of all Malaysians. VTAREC also took the opportunity to honour members of the media at the event. Lokman said the Anugerah Menyantuni Rakan Media is the first appreciation event organised by VTAREC to honour media practitioners who have played a significant role in promoting awareness about the importance of vehicle protection. Media Prima deputy group managing editor for News & Current Affairs and New Straits Times group editor Farrah Naz Karim was among those recognised at the event. Also honoured was New Straits Times deputy group editor Sharanjit Singh Tara Singh. Both awards were received on their behalf by Business Times news editor Sharenjeet Kaur Saran Singh. Other recipients included NST specialist writer Aliza Shah, journalist Iylia Marsya Iskandar, and Harian Metro journalist Mohd Haris Fadli Mohd Fadzil. Lokman said amid today's challenges, the most important and fundamental priority is to continue building, maintaining, and nurturing a strong partnership between VTAREC and the media. "I believe that through a symbiotic relationship between VTAREC and the media, we can develop more efficient communication teams in handling information. "With a strong relationship in place, VTAREC can provide accurate and clear explanations through the mass media so the public can better understand issues related to vehicle theft and road traffic accidents in our country," he said.

Saifuddin: Immigration officers getting 600 body cams under integrity push, autogates coming in June

PUTRAJAYA, April 24 — The Home Ministry (KDN) will provide about 600 units of body cameras for use by immigration officers, as part of efforts to improve the agency's integrity and transparency. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the move was in response to concerns raised by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on the issue of integrity in the immigration service. 'Datuk Seri (Prime Minister) himself called the Immigration director-general and expressed the need to immediately work on the use of body cameras,' he said when speaking at the Home Ministry's Hari Raya Aidilfitri Celebration here today. According to Saifuddin Nasution, he then instructed KDN secretary-general to expedite the process, and the procurement will be carried out on April 28 to enable 600 body cameras to be provided as soon as possible. In addition, he said the autogate system would replace most of the manual counters at international airports starting this June, in line with the Prime Minister's wish to speed up the process of entrance and departure by tourists at the country's border checkpoints. 'As Datuk Seri wishes, by June, most of the international airports will replace manual counters with autogates, which will allow the departure of travellers to take place in a very short time. That is our commitment,' he said. These initiatives are seen as part of the government's ongoing efforts to improve public service delivery and strengthen the people's trust in enforcement agencies. Earlier, Anwar also spent about 30 minutes greeting KDN staff. The ceremony was also attended by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki. — Bernama

Also attending the ceremony on Wednesday (April 23) was the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim. Their Royal Highnesses were greeted upon arrival by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, UPSI pro-chancellor Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Zakri Abdul Hamid and UPSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff. In his speech, Md Amin said the concept by Sultan Nazrin had inspired UPSI researchers together with the Synergy Generated Company and UPSI Holdings Sdn Bhd to build a Solar Arch or the first mega solar hall in Malaysia with an area of over 12,500 square feet. "UPSI's Solar Arch, with its zero capex concept, has successfully reduced carbon emissions by 2,800 tonnes per year, and saving construction costs of RM5mil. "In addition, it saves electricity bills of RM2mil per year as well as saving ceremonial tent rentals of RM500,000 per year, and it is able to generate up to RM350,000 per year through rental for various programmes implemented at the arch," he said. He said the Solar Arch initiative would also be a catalyst for UPSI's leap in achievement for the Low Carbon City Award and UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. "This modern initiative is not just a physical landmark, but a symbol of sustainable commitment that shines towards world-class green initiatives in the state of Perak Darul Ridzuan. "The project is In line with the aspirations of the book written by the Sultan, 'Globalisation, Perak's Rise, Relative Decline and Regeneration'," he said. Meanwhile, Sultan Nazrin and Tuanku Zara also witnessed the exchange of Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) between UPSI, Institut Darul Ridzuan (IDR) and Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) in the fields of research, education, law and care economics training. Their Highnesses also attended a feast in conjunction with UPSI's 2025 Hari Raya Aidilfitri Celebration and ended with a visit to the food stalls at the event. — Bernama
