Seamus Harnedy returns to squad as Cork name unchanged team

Seamus Harnedy and Cormac O'Brien have returned to the Cork matchday panel but Pat Ryan has named an unchanged side for Sunday's All-Ireland final against Tipperary. Harnedy had been described as "touch and go" for the All-Ireland final by his manager last week, having been ruled out of their semi-final rout of Dublin with an hamstring injury. Wing-back O'Brien had missed the semi-final with a quad injury, though Ryan was more optimistic for his involvement. In the event, both are included in the squad though are named on the bench as Ryan has stuck with the same starting XV that struck seven goals past Dublin nearly a fortnight ago. Ethan Twomey and Jack O'Connor are the two players to make way from the matchday squad. The experienced Harnedy, who turns 35 today, made his debut for Cork in 2011 and starred in their unexpected run to the final in 2013, earning an All-Star that season. Cork remain unchanged for All-Ireland SHC final against Tipp

Seamus Harnedy and Cormac O'Brien have been named on the Cork bench as manager Pat Ryan has opted to go with the same starting team that beat Dublin for Sunday's All-Ireland SHC final against Tipperary. Fit-again Harnedy of St Ita's and Newtownshandrum's O'Brien are among the substitutes and they come in for Ethan Twomey and Jack O'Connor. Veteran Harnedy was ruled out of the semi-final with a hamstring issue, while O'Brien is returning from a quad issue. Cork also went with the same side for last year's final against Clare that began the semi-final win over Limerick. Diarmuid Healy for Harnedy is the one change from that side that lost out to Clare in extra-time 12 months ago. All but two of the 15 who began the Munster SHC win over Tipperary in April are set to start. For Twomey and Harnedy in come Shane Barrett, who was suspended for that game, and Healy. Sunday will mark Patrick Horgan's fifth All-Ireland final start including the 2013 All-Ireland final replay. His Glen Rovers club-mate Rob Downey is hoping to become the first man from the club to lift aloft the Liam MacCarthy Cup since Tomás Mulcahy in 2010. As was the case for the semi-final, the extended panel members will be permitted to tog out for the decider. Tipperary are due to name their team around 10am on Friday morning. Extra panel members: Cathal McCarthy (Sarsfields), Daniel Hogan (Sarsfields), Darragh Flynn (Ballygiblin), Darragh O'Sullivan (Ballinhassig), Eoin Roche (Bride Rovers), Ethan Twomey (St Finbarrs), Jack Cahalane (St Finbarrs), Jack O'Connor (Sarsfields), Micheál Mullins (Glen Rovers), Pádraig Power (Blarney), Robbie Cotter (Blackrock), William Buckley (St Finbarrs).

What are the key selection decisions facing the Cork and Tipperary camps?

ONE LAST HURDLE for Cork and Tipperary to surmount. Sunday's All-Ireland showdown represents the final challenge of the season for managers Pat Ryan and Liam Cahill. The Cork boss watched his team blitz Dublin in their semi-final and emerge runaway victors, his Tipperary counterpart saw his side summon a terrific revival in the finale to overtake Leinster champions Kilkenny. After those successess, they both have one last selection to make in 2025. What are the key decisions that await them? Advertisement ***** Cork The pivotal question facing Cork surrounds Seamus Harnedy. Their long-serving forward has been a constant and vital presence in their attack for years, but missed the win over Dublin with a hamstring injury. Pat Ryan last week assessed Harnedy's chances of being back in the frame as 'touch and go'. Will he be fit enough to join the substitute ranks on the bench or make a rapid recovery to force his way into the team? Declan Dalton replaced Harnedy for the semi-final, but having shaken off his own injury struggles, the sense is he has nailed down his starting spot with the blend of physicality and long-range striking prowess he possesses. If Harnedy is given the green light to start, will Cork utilise his experience over Diarmuid Healy, a bright spark in his debut season? Cormac O'Brien, who started the Munster final but missed the Dublin game with a quad injury, is likely to be available again, but it is difficult to see him disrupting the established half-back line trio of Ciarán Joyce, captain Robert Downey, and Mark Coleman. Cork's substitutes contributed 0-6 v Limerick and 0-4 v Dublin, with Shane Kingston and Conor Lehane the two leading lights in that regard, but their talents seem likely to be utilised at a key stage in the second half once more. The fierce level of competition extends to the 26-man squad. If Harnedy and O'Brien rejoin the panel, it leaves the Cork management with the hard decision of who to omit? Cork's Cormac O'Brien and Gearoid Hegarty of Limerick. James Crombie / INPHO James Crombie / INPHO / INPHO ***** Tipperary The spotlight for Tipperary falls on the composition of their midfield. They announced a late pre-match change against Kilkenny with the inclusion of Conor Stakelum. He thrived in that middle sector, bagging three points from play with those scores crucial at a time in the opening half when Tipperary found it difficult on occasion to raise white flags. Stakelum started alongside Willie Connors then, while it was Peter McGarry who started previously against Galway, and Darragh Stakelum replaced him at half-time of that quarter-final. Right now, Stakelum appears in pole position following his performance against Kilkenny. Alan Tynan makes a persuasive case for inclusion with his energy and industry helping swing the semi-final Tipperary's way. Noel McGrath orchestrated Tipperary's play in the finale and his effective role off the bench seems something Liam Cahill is keen to keep utilising. The experience of Seamus Kennedy may be called on as a sub on this occasion as well. Tipperary's starting defensive unit has a settled look to it. Positionally the big calls here are which markers will be detailed against Cork's in-form forwards. Ronan Maher at number three or six? James Crombie / INPHO James Crombie / INPHO / INPHO In attack their semi-final hero Oisin O'Donoghue is in a rich run of goalscoring form having netted against Kilkenny, Galway, and Waterford this season. Those vital cameos could nudge Cahill towards holding him back once more. The assigning of the free-taking role will also be interesting, Darargh McCarthy had an off-day last time out, while Jason Forde stepped up to nail pressure shots in the closing moments. *****

Cork warned they won't win All-Ireland without key player

Cork will find it very difficult to win the All-Ireland hurling final without Seamus Harnedy. That is the opinion of former Limerick star Niall Moran, who feels the odds are tipped in the favour of Tipperary if Harnedy doesn't start the All-Ireland final. Harnedy has been a key man once again for Cork this season, however, he missed last weekend's quarter-final rout win over Dublin with a hamstring issue. His replacement Declan Dalton excelled at Croke Park, notching five points in an extremely impressive display, but even so, Moran feels Cork's hopes of winning rest on Harnedy's ability to start the final. "He has to find a place for Seamie Harnedy," Moran said on RTE Radio's Game On. "In my book, Cork don't win any All-Ireland without him. Who will be the unlucky person to miss out?" After Saturday's win over Dublin, Cork boss Pat Ryan gave an update on Harnedy: "Séamus will be touch and go. Hopefully he might be back in next Tuesday. We'll see how it goes." "Everyone is missing players but obviously missing Séamus is a huge blow to our team. It's a huge blow to himself firstly. But we'd be confident that he'll hopefully be able to take some part in it. 'Our medical staff are working hard on it and Séamus is working hard himself. He's putting every day into it and there's a lot of recovery needed for that. 'What'll happen is if he's right, he's right. If he's not right, we'll go with what we have. We have great confidence in the lads we have." While Cork have been the best team in the land all year, Moran believes the pressure on their shoulders of ending a 20-year drought could play into Tipp's hands. "The real weight of expectation is going to be on one team and one team only and that's Cork. "If Cork are only a point or two up, with 10 minutes left, how will the psychology of that work for them? "Whose camp would you prefer to be preparing for? I definitely think Liam Cahill has all the aces up his sleeve in terms of that. "Can Tipp bring that level of performance and a little bit extra? It's not beyond them."
