Seamus Harnedy: Cork hadn't become a bad team overnight

Séamus Harnedy believes Cork never bought into the hype after their league triumph so were able to rebuild their confidence ahead of turning the tables on Limerick in stunning fashion. The Treaty hammered the then All-Ireland favourites by 16 points at the Gaelic Grounds on 18 May but prevailed in an epic, historic Munster final rematch at the same venue on Saturday for their first provincial title since 2018. "We did a lot of soul-searching there a couple of weeks ago," the veteran forward told RTÉ Sport. "We were beaten by 16 points down here. Everyone went back training hard, stuck to the routine. We didn't turn on each other. "We knew we didn't become a bad team overnight. So we just had to batten down the hatches, go back training hard and doing what serves us best. "So credit to Pat Ryan, credit to management and credit to the squad as well. Pat's an incredible guy. Win, lose or draw, once you put an honest effort in he's delighted with you. We love playing for him. "There are highs and lows in sport. Sometimes when things are going very well, people blow you up in the air and when things are going bad, they'll knock you down. But you're always somewhere in the middle. "We're incredibly happy today." Also incredibly happy were the thousands of Cork fans who made the journey more in hope than expectation. "There's serious support in Cork. They only want to get behind this team. It was easy for them not to travel up here after what happened a couple of weeks ago. "Fair play to them, they turned up again in their droves, and I'm delighted we could give them something back." Harnedy, who turns 35 next month, scored two points before departing in the 68th minute. His fellow veteran Conor Lehane (32) was one of those called upon in the subsequent extra-time and penalty shootout. "An incredible game," reflected Harnedy. "It ebbed and flowed throughout. In fairness to Limerick, we got two or three points up and they kept coming back at us. "I thought our lads showed serious character as well. It was an unbelievable game. "For any Munster final to be decided on penalties is tough and I feel for them. But it has been a long time. We were trying to stop Limerick doing seven in a row. "[Lehane] is one of my best buddies over the years and we kind of started around the same time. He got everything he deserved there. He's a top-class player and I'm thrilled for him. "He stuck a penalty, got two unbelievable points when he came on, kept showing for the ball. But sure we've all seen Connor do that, time in time out. He's invaluable to us."

Barrett to captain Cork as Ryan makes four changes for Waterford clash

Shane Barrett captains Cork in injured Rob Downey's stead as Pat Ryan makes four changes to the side that lost to Limerick for Sunday's final round clash with Waterford. Niall O'Leary and Declan Dalton, who miss out after suffering setbacks in the Limerick game, are also not included in the matchday panel in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, while Ethan Twomey drops to the bench. In their place come Cormac O'Brien at wing-back and Brian Roche in midfield, Ger Millerick at corner-back and Seamus Harnedy at half-forward. Roche was Dalton's replacement in the eighth minute of the game in TUS Gaelic Grounds. O'Brien and Harnedy came off the bench at half-time for Downey and Twomey. From the team that started last year's opening round loss to Waterford in Walsh Park, there are 10 survivors – Patrick Collins, Millerick, Seán O'Donoghue, Ciaran Joyce, Mark Coleman, Darragh Fitzgibbon, Harnedy, Barrett, Alan Connolly and Patrick Horgan. CORK (SHC v Waterford): P. Collins; G. Millerick, E. Downey, S. O'Donoghue; C. O'Brien, C. Joyce, M. Coleman; T. O'Mahony, B. Roche; S. Barrett (c), D. Fitzgibbon, S. Harnedy; P. Horgan, A. Cork make one change for Limerick as Shane Barrett returns

Shane Barrett for Seamus Harnedy is the only difference in the Cork team named to face Limerick in TUS Gaelic Grounds in Sunday's Munster SHC Round 4 clash. Barrett returns to the squad having sat out the comprehensive Round 2 victory over Tipperary through suspension when Harnedy played the entire 70-plus minutes. The 24-year-old was issued a red card in the second half of the opening round draw with Clare after Ennis after lashing out at David Reidy and handed a one-game ban. The Blarney man was excellent in the two victories over Limerick last year and his inclusion means Cork are set to go with all but one of the 15 that began last year's All-Ireland semi-final. Ethan Twomey for Harnedy is the single contrast from that two-point win over John Kiely's side. Captain Robert Downey is included in the team despite going off with a leg injury in the 20th minute in the game against Tipperary. The same injury appeared to force him off in the Round 1 game. Meanwhile, Diarmuid O'Connor is set to make his first appearance for Kerry in two months as he has been named in the team to face Roscommon in Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday. O'Connor, who had been in excellent form for The Kingdom prior to a shoulder injury sustained against Armagh, has missed the last four matches but comes in for the first match in the Munster victors's All-Ireland campaign. Goalkeeper Shane Ryan is also fit to begin the game after missing the Munster final win over Clare with a leg injury that forced him off in the first half of the extra-time win over Cork last month. That pair are the only alterations from the side that defeated Clare – Paudie Clifford is not included in the squad despite serving his one-match ban. Out of the team go Shane Murphy and Tony Brosnan, who are both on the bench. Joe O'Connor moves to wing forward. Paul Murphy and Graham O'Sullivan are among the substitutes after injury sidelined them for the Munster final. Elsewhere, Shane Walsh has been announced in the Galway team that will take on Dublin in their opening All-Ireland group game in Salthill on Saturday. Walsh has not featured for the Connacht champions since coming off at half-time against Dublin in their Division 1 game in March. He replaces Seán Fitzgerald whose place in the backs is taken by captain Seán Kelly. CORK (SHC v Limerick): P. Collins; N. O'Leary, E. Downey, S. O'Donoghue; C. Joyce, R. Downey (c), M. Coleman; T.
