Mike Vrabel lauds one area as strength for Patriots in 2025

Mike Vrabel lauds one area as strength for Patriots in 2025 New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel believes that the defensive line and linebacker positions are going to be strengths for the team in the upcoming season. When speaking with media members on Monday, he noted that the investments made in the front-seven during the offseason are a big reason for his confidence in those units. The linebacker position was upgraded with the additions of veterans Harold Landry III, Robert Spillane and Jack Gibbens. All three players have a history of working with Vrabel in the past. They also signed free agent defensive tackle Milton Williams to a historic deal, while also spending two draft picks on defensive tackle Joshua Farmer and edge rusher Bradyn Swinson. The defensive front should also be helped by a solid Patriots' secondary that added veteran Carlton Davis III to play opposite of All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez. That extra time of opposing receivers fighting to get free should only increase the sack window for the front-seven. New England has improved at every level of the defense in the offseason, and there's a chance they could once again reign as one of the top units in the NFL. Harold Landry III Feels Back At Home With Mike Vrabel's Patriots

Former Tennessee Titans outside linebacker Harold Landry III signed a three-year, $43.5 million ... More contract with the New England Patriots in March. (AP Photo/Maria Lysaker) Harold Landry III knew what was on deck well before the voluntary offseason program got underway at Gillette Stadium. The veteran outside linebacker spent his initial six NFL years alongside the head coach that now resides there. And with Mike Vrabel's New England Patriots, he believes he is in the right place. 'I think the biggest thing that we're going to pride ourselves on is playing hard, playing fast,' Landry told reporters during his introductory press conference on Tuesday. 'He really values effort and finish, especially on the defensive side of the ball. You want to see as many hats as you can in the picture at the end of the play around the ball. I think as long as we maintain the style of play that we're trying to implement here — even if you might not have fit up a run gap perfectly or didn't play with the greatest technique – that style of play is what's going to result in wins.' Taken No. 41 overall in the 2018 NFL draft, Landry had been a member of the Tennessee Titans until March. He appeared in 98 games, including 79 starts, during his tenure with the organization. Landry tallied 397 tackles, 70 tackles for loss and 50.5 sacks over that span. Along the way arrived one safety, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries as well as two interceptions. 'I pride myself on being versatile and productive,' Landry said. 'I want to be a guy that they can move around, but also, they can just keep me on the edge and I can win a one-on-one and I can go and be productive. But I want to be the Swiss Army knife.' A torn ACL saw the former Pro Bowler miss the 2022 season, yet his second career campaign with double-digit sacks followed in 2023 before Vrabel departed from Nashville. After being released ahead of NFL free agency, Landry reunited on a three-year, $43.5 million contract in Foxborough. 'He's meant a lot. He's played a big role in my development as a player and also as a person,' added Landry. 'And I was excited to come back because he knows my skillset, he knows how I operate, and I think throughout my career he and his staff have done a great job of putting me in positions to go out and be productive and help the team.' The Boston College product's agreement brings $26 million guaranteed. It also brings Landry into the fold for a familiar defensive staff that is overseen by coordinator Terrell Williams, who served as Tennessee's defensive line coach and eventual assistant head coach under Vrabel. That run gave way to a 54-45 record in the regular season and a 2-3 record in the postseason. A pair of AFC South titles and an appearance in the AFC title game were accrued. 'We really valued each other and we played hard for each other,' Landry recalled. 'We didn't want to let each other down. And I think that showed on the film, on the tape. But also, I feel like one of the main jobs for a head coach is to make sure your team is prepared situationally. And all I know is as long as I've played for Vrabes, there was never a situation I wasn't prepared for. Like, I don't care what the score was in the fourth quarter, I don't know, we just always had a feeling like we was going to pull this out.' Landry, who turns 29 in June, stands 5,293 defensive snaps into his run in the league. He led Tennessee's defense in starts, sacks and tackles for loss last campaign while also tying for the team lead in quarterback hits. Landry moves forward in New England with cap charges of $8.5 million for 2025, $16.5 million for 2026 and $18.5 million for 2027, according to 'Once I saw how things were going and the writing was on the wall, this was definitely a place that I wanted to be,' Landry said. 'I was getting excited about the staff he was putting together, and I just felt like this was the right place for me and I'm excited to be here.'

Patriots reportedly agree to deal with Pro Bowl edge rusher

Patriots reportedly agree to deal with Pro Bowl edge rusher The New England Patriots kick-started the free agency blitz on Sunday by reportedly agreeing in principle on a deal with former Pro Bowl linebacker Harold Landry III. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported the contract will be a three-year deal for $46.5 million with $26 million in guaranteed money. The Tennessee Titans agreed to allow Landry to seek a trade back in February, and it seemed likely from the very beginning that the Patriots would show interest. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel was the head coach for the Titans when the team selected the veteran defender in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft. Landry is one of the more highly-productive and consistent linebackers in the league. He racked up 71 tackles, nine sacks, four pass deflections and a safety in 2024. That performance came on the heels of back-to-back double-digit sack seasons. This move is an impressive start to the Vrabel era for the rebuilding Patriots, and it's likely only the tip of the iceberg for a team that has a lot of money to spend and plenty of holes to fill.

Titans release 7-year veteran linebacker Harold Landry III ahead of free agency

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans released veteran linebacker Harold Landry III on Friday to clear salary cap space. The seven-year veteran had been due to count $24.1 million against the cap for this season. Releasing Landry puts Tennessee seventh in the NFL with more than $63 million in salary cap space per to go along with the No. 1 pick in the April draft. Landry led the Titans with nine sacks, and he also had 41 pressures. He set a career high with 15 tackles for loss. He was one of only three NFL players with at least 70 tackles and 15 tackles for loss joining Andrew Van Ginkel of the Vikings and Brian Burns of the Giants. But the 41st pick overall out of Boston College in 2018 had only one Pro Bowl berth in his tenure in Tennessee in 2021. That was his best season with a career-high 12 sacks helping him earn a five-year extension in March 2022. Then the outside linebacker tore an ACL days before the season opener. Landry returned for the 2023 season and turned in quite the comeback. Landry had 10 1/2 sacks, making him only the third NFL veteran since 1982 (when the sack became an official individual statistic) and first since 2001 to miss an entire season and return with at least 10 sacks the next. Yet the Titans have three straight losing seasons, and Landry didn't help them despite playing 17 games each of the last two years. He started 79 of 98 career games and has 50 1/2 career sacks. He has had four career seasons with nine or more sacks. The Titans also announced contract extensions with defensive lineman Keondre Coburn and linebacker Otis Reese. ___

Reports: Titans release sacks leader Harold Landry III

March 7 - The Tennessee Titans released outside linebacker Harold Landry III after unsuccessfully shopping their top pass rusher in trade talks. Landry, 28, was the Titans' longest-tenured player. Landry would have earned $17.5 million in base salary with a $24.05 million cap hit in 2025. Tennessee will save $10.9 million in cap space, bypassing a June 1 designation available that would have increased the franchise's savings to $17.5 million. A second-round pick in 2018, Landry started all 17 games last season and made 71 tackles with a team-high nine sacks as well as 15 tackles for loss, one safety, 15 quarterback hits and four forced fumbles. He has 397 career tackles in 98 regular-season games (79 starts) with 50.5 sacks, 70 tackles for loss, 102 QB hits, two interceptions, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Landry signed a five-year, $87 million deal in 2022 but tore his ACL in the preseason and missed the entire campaign.
