DC edge PBKS as top 2 spots still up for grabs
Jaipur, May 24 (UNI) Delhi Capitals produced a commanding batting performance to chase down a daunting 207-run target and seal a six-wicket win over Punjab Kings in a high-scoring IPL 2025 contest at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium here on Saturday. Even after 66 matches, the race for the top two spots in the league table remains wide open, with qualified teams still jostling for playoff positioning, an unusual scenario that reflects the tightly contested nature of this year's tournament. On the night, it was Delhi's young batting sensation Sameer Rizvi who stole the limelight with a blistering unbeaten 58 off just 25 balls, steering his side to 208 for four in 19.3 overs. Rizvi's late onslaught, studded with five towering sixes and three boundaries at a strike rate of 232, turned the match on its head and delivered a much-needed morale boost for his side. Karun Nair chipped in with a fluent 44, while debutant Sediqullah Atal added a handy 22 off 16 deliveries. Openers KL Rahul (35 off 21) and Faf du Plessis (23 off 15) had set a solid platform with a 55-run stand before falling in quick succession. Rizvi, however, ensured the momentum never dipped, combining with wicketkeeper-batsman Tristan Stubbs (18* off 12) in a composed finish that took Delhi over the line with three balls to spare. Punjab's bowlers found the going tough in the latter stages. Harpreet Brar was the pick of the lot with figures of 2 for 41, while Marco Jansen and Praveen Dubey managed one wicket each. But the attack lacked the bite to halt Rizvi's charge when it mattered most. Earlier, after being put in to bat, Punjab posted a formidable 206 for eight. Skipper Shreyas Iyer held the innings together with a composed 53 off 34 balls, while Marcus Stoinis provided the fireworks at the death, smashing an unbeaten 44 from just 16 deliveries, laced with three boundaries and four sixes. Punjab had a bumpy start with Priyansh Arya (6) falling early to Mustafizur Rahman (3/33). A rapid 32 off 12 from Josh Inglis and a lively 28 from Prabhsimran Singh helped Punjab recover to 60 for one at the end of the Powerplay. Debutant Vipraj Nigam swung the momentum back Delhi's way with a double strike, dismissing both Inglis and Prabhsimran in quick succession. Kuldeep Yadav (2/39) then struck twice, removing Iyer and Azmatullah Omarzai, to further slow Punjab's advance. Despite the fall of wickets, Stoinis ensured a strong finish, aided by a brief cameo from Harpreet Brar (7 not out off 2 balls). Delhi's bowlers had mixed returns—while Mustafizur and Vipraj impressed with their control and breakthroughs, Mukesh Kumar (1/49) and Mohit Sharma (0/47) leaked runs at the death, allowing Punjab to breach the 200-run mark. Riding a wave of success after a decade of pain, a full-strength Punjab will fancy their chances of securing their first top-two finish in 11 years when they face Delhi. Apart from the 2014 season when they topped the league table and finished runners-up, Punjab have only made one other playoff appearance in a competition that has been in existence for the past 18 years. As far as Delhi are concerned, they have had their chances this season, but the lack of big runs in the powerplay and the absence of lead pacer Mitchell Starc towards the end have hurt their prospects. PBKS vs DC Match: Jaipur Weather Forecast The temperature will be at 33 degrees Celsius on Saturday evening in Jaipur. There will be 36% humidity, and there is just a 1% chance of rain, which means we have a full game on our hands. PBKS vs DC: Sawai Mansingh Stadium Pitch Report The track at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium promises a balanced contest between bat and ball. Bowlers might find movement with the new ball, but once that threat is negotiated, conditions should tilt in favour of the batters, permitting them to take charge as the match unfolds. The last match at this venue saw Punjab post a whopping 219/5, and the Rajasthan Royals fell 10 runs short of the target. For a change, PBKS would like to field first if they win the toss against Delhi. Harpreet Brar's Heartwarming Gesture After PBKS' Crucial Win Vs RR: 'Like To Dedicate This Award...'
Last Updated: Harpreet Brar dedicated his Player of the Match award to his wife after leading Punjab Kings to a crucial victory over the Rajasthan Royals. Punjab Kings' left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar on Sunday, May 18, dedicated his Player of the Match award against the Rajasthan Royals to his wife Anmol Sandhu, saying that it was his first award after marriage, in what has come as a lovely gesture from the newly-married cricketer. Brar bowled a match-turning spell after Nehal Wadhera and Shashank Singh made bruising half-centuries as Punjab edged closer to an IPL playoff berth with a 10-run victory over Rajasthan. Punjab later qualified for the playoffs after the Gujarat Titans defeated the Delhi Capitals in the evening game. 'I am feeling really good. I would like to dedicate this award to my wife, as it is my first after marriage," Brar said while speaking at the post-match presentation. 'We practice a lot against the left-handers. Ponting Sir has told us that a leftie can get a leftie out. I have worked on that, I knew they would come after me, but I went back to bowling to my strengths," Brar added. advetisement The spinner, who came in as a substitute for captain Shreyas Iyer, who suffered a finger injury, was introduced in the fifth over, and he walked away with an impressive 3/22 in four overs. Brar, who mixed up his angles, trajectory and pace with precision, played a big part in Punjab's win against Rajasthan. 'The way the wicket was playing and they were batting, the plan was to not give a boundary or give them easy balls. I have been with Sunil (Joshi) Sir for a long time, I have learned a lot, he's taught me how to use the crease, how to read the batter and the wicket," Brar said. 'After Chahal's arrival, I thought it would be easy to bowl with him. I didn't get an opportunity at the start, but cricket is a funny game. I always thought that once I got an opportunity, I would grab it," Brar added. The spinner's introduction proved decisive, as he first removed Vaibhav Suryavanshi and then dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal, who fell after completing his sixth half-century of the season. PBKS will next play the Delhi Capitals on Saturday, May 24, in Jaipur. Watch CNN-News18 here.
