This Pedicure is Controversial, But I Wear It Every Summer

I've always loved a French pedicure. No matter what's going on in my life, it always makes me feel polished, like I have my life together — even when I'm not wearing a lick of makeup or I haven't washed my hair in days. With that in mind, I'm thrilled that the design is making a comeback. But it's not in the Y2K way you might remember from your teenage years (alongside velour tracksuits and frosted lip gloss). If Instagram is anything to go by, the French pedicure is chic and modern. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Harriet Westmoreland (@harrietwestmoreland) What is a French pedicure? If you're looking for a do-it-all pedicure that goes with everything and works for any occasion, the classic French is versatile. Whether you're heading to the beach, the office or your third wedding of the summer, it just works. Whether you love it or hate it, a French pedicure is a classic for a reason: 'It's clean, elegant and endlessly wearable,' says Juanita Huber-Millet, founder and creative director of Townhouse. 'Traditionally, this look features a soft nude or pink base with a crisp white tip.' Adding, 'It's that timeless contrast that makes it so instantly loved and recognisable.' It's little wonder, then, that the design is often spotted on some of the world's biggest celebrities at red carpet events. Think Rihanna, Kylie Jenner and Lily Allen, who are just a few stars frequently photographed with a fresh French pedicure. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Milly Mason (@millymason_) What are the benefits of a French pedicure? French pedicures aren't limited to just pink and white; there are endless possibilities to explore with colours and creative designs: 'French pedicures are back but in a unique and modern way,' says Fatima Naveed, senior brand manager at Duck & Dry. 'We're enjoying using fresh new shades and details to breathe new life into the traditional design,' like chrome and pastel tips, and jelly base colours. Huber-Millet loves that the French pedicure complements every skin tone — and grows out beautifully. 'It's understated luxury that never goes out of style,' she says. But not everyone is sold on the French pedicure. If social media is anything to go by, it's even a little controversial at times. Why? Naveed explains that the trend essentially emphasises the overgrown tips of toenails, making critics question the look's practicality. 'Personally, though, I think that the key lies in the length as well as the choice of tip and base colour,' she says. 'A milky white or a sheer pink tip will give a more subtle, chic finish than bold white tips.' As for the base shade? 'It's more than just a background colour; it sets the entire tone of the design.' What does the French pedicure look like in 2025? If you want to avoid the overgrown look, consider one of the biggest French pedicure trends. Enter: micro tips. 'The micro French pedicure is gaining huge popularity,' says Naveed. 'It consists of a very thin tip along the edge of toenails, which provides a clean and understated look.' The secret to pulling it off is keeping toenails short and well-groomed. This helps enhance the minimalist effect. Naveed's clients also opt for a 'Frombré' effect (French ombré) which blends the nude base and milky white tip shades to lend a subtle, modern take on the look. Huber-Millet adds that 2025 is seeing a real evolution of the French pedicure: 'It's all about tonal or unexpected colour pairings and playful accents like chrome, shimmer or deep red shades for a moodier take. It's fresh, flattering and very now.' Keeping that in mind, scroll on for nine French pedicure trends to try now. 'Wellness' Nails To Navy Blue: 12 Nail Trends That You Need To Try

We're in the trenches of winter, so I'm looking to collect ideas for my next manicure. And while this year has more than delivered on amazing trends to take inspiration from (I'm talking no-makeup manicures, jewellery nails and pixie dust nails), I'm glad to report that there are some other incredible nail looks to play with. Whether you're into a minimalist manicure or bedazzled nail art with all the trimmings, the latest looks are set to deliver on colour, texture and nail health. But don't take my word for it. I caught up with some of the best nail artists in the business to get their take on what we can do with our nails to make them stand out. Here's all the inspiration you need. Wellness Nails View this post on Instagram A post shared by Harriet Westmoreland (@harrietwestmoreland) The 'clean girl' nail aesthetic has been one of the most enduring nail trends of the last couple of years but this year, it's going one step further with a focus on nail health. 'Nail care is evolving, with a focus on health-conscious products that support and protect natural nails,' says Juanita Huber-Millet, founder and creative director of Townhouse. 'From breathable polishes to strengthening treatments, consumers are seeking out products designed to provide a nourishing, wellness-led experience that support natural nail growth.' Manucurist's Active Glow in Raspberry, $27, is a 2-in-1 treatment polish that leaves nails with a rosy sheen while nourishing them with sweet almond oil and raspberry extract. Navy Blue View this post on Instagram A post shared by Julia Diogo (@paintedbyjools) All the nail experts are in agreement: Navy blue is on everyone's nails in 2025. 'Blues in general will be popular but navy will continue to be a standout colour for the upcoming seasons,' says session manicurist Ami Streets. 'It's a chic, deep hue that looks great as an edgier manicure color while still being softer and more elegant than black.' Julia Diogo's perfectly executed navy nails are timeless. Try Chanel Le Vernis Nail Color in 127 Fugueuse, $49, for a luxurious at-home manicure. Milky Pastels View this post on Instagram A post shared by Julia Diogo (@paintedbyjools) There's nothing new about pastels, so it's no surprise that all the experts I spoke to are ready for their resurgence. However, the current iteration is more pared-back than ever. 'I'm expecting milky shades that provide a fresh, [clean] aesthetic to be popular as they look effortlessly beautiful and put-together,' says international nail artist and one of Bio Sculpture's top technicians, Julia Diogo. Her soft lavender manicure fits the aesthetic perfectly. Marble Elements View this post on Instagram A post shared by San Sung Kim | 김산성 (@sansungnails) Streets has marbling pinned as a nail trend that's taking off this season. 'Marbling inspired by natural events like the sunrise, skies or the ocean works really well interpreted into nail art looks, so I think this trend will be one to watch,' she says. This marbled take on a sunset by San Sung Kim is so beautiful that it might just be first on my next manicure wish list. Tiffany Blue View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jaz (@paintbyjaz) Call it Tiffany blue, turquoise or aqua, this holiday-ready cyan might just be the breakout shade of 2025. Diogo notes the influence of 'Tiffany blue taking over recent catwalks' as an indicator of what's to come, while Streets talks of 'aqua blues and greens inspired by the ocean with opalescent or shimmering finishes' emerging as popular choices this season. OPI's Nail Lacquer in My Dogsled is a Hybrid, $13, is a similar sea green to the one used in Jaz's minimalist double French manicure. Velvet Shine View this post on Instagram A post shared by Queenie Nguyen | elevated nail artist (@nailartbyqueenie) Texture is having a moment this year and the velvet finish look is adorning everyone's nails. 'Texture is really going to take centre stage in 2025 and velvet delivers on both depth and dimension,' explains Huber-Millet. 'It's a subtle yet impactful design that will appeal to those who like more intricate details over ostentatious embellishments.' Queenie Nguyen's cinnamon velvet nails make for the perfect cosy fall and winter look. Micro French View this post on Instagram A post shared by CORRINNA BIANCA | LONDON (@corrinnabianca) Not all of this year's nail trends are new; there are plenty of manicure looks from last year that have stuck around for the long haul. 'Minimalist nail art isn't going anywhere,' declares pro nail artist and educator Jessica White. 'Designs like micro French tips have become staples because they're wearable and versatile.' Corrinna Bianca's cold brew latte French tips are so delicately painted and chic. Try it yourself (with a steady hand!) using Essie Nail Polish in Odd Squad, $15.99 $13.99. Three-Dimensional View this post on Instagram A post shared by Melanie Graves (@overglowedit) Diogo is unequivocal about one thing for 2025: It's all about dimension. 'I'm absolutely loving 3D swirls and outlines right now. It's a great option for anyone who wants to try something a little playful.' Melanie Graves has shared so many amazing multidimensional manicures this year, but this monochromatic look is particularly cool. Fine Embellishment View this post on Instagram A post shared by Wendy (@mydumbnails) While 3D texture and nail decorations continue to trend, Streets also loves the minimalist approach to adornment this year. 'Embellishments will still be super popular but I think that these will be toned down in favour of more refined adornments like pearls and crystals,' she explains. Wendy's shimmering manicure is both pretty and pared back. Rich Burgundy View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lauren ✨ (@ Deep, rich shades have continued to reign supreme in 2025. Last year's obsession with chocolate brown has continued but we've seen a shift towards merlot and burgundy, as illustrated by Lauren's sultry red manicure. 'I'm noticing a lot of buzz around Bio Sculpture's new Ghost Noir polish [available to licensed professionals only] which is nearly black with deep red undertones for a mysterious yet sophisticated vibe,' says Diogo. Celestial Yellow View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sonia Sanchez | GelX Nail Artist | 818 San Fernando Valley (@klawsbysonia) Oranges and yellows never go out of style, but it's 'celestial yellow' that Streets thinks is a trend to watch. 'Inspired by otherworldly elements like the sun, moon and stars, it's one to add vibrancy to your nail look,' she says. Try OPI Nail Lacquer in Exotic Birds Do Not Tweet, $13, to recreate Sonia Sanchez's embellished citrus manicure at home. Subtle Chrome View this post on Instagram A post shared by @yo_keshh White thinks that rather than a 'full-coverage chrome finish', there is a shift towards more subtle chrome accents and softer detailing for a more understated take on the trend. Keshia's abstract gold chrome tips are the perfect example.

Soft serve nails: The viral summer manicure that's as sweet as it sounds

There's a manicure trend that's making its way not-so-stealthily across Tiktok, celebrity fingertips and salon chairs this summer, which is just as sweet, smooth and nostalgic as it sounds. Cue soft serve nails: A delectable, milky dream of a manicure that blends the best bits of a French manicure with a gel ombré and - you've guessed it - ice cream. A creamy, buttery array of subtle, sorbet shades, whipped pinks and creamy nudes that melt seamlessly into sheer, milky white at the nail tip, soft serve nails are finished with a high-gloss top coat. Think colour that is seamlessly 'churned' - if you will -with no beginning or end: strawberry and vanilla swirls, subtle raspberry ripple or even creamy apricot. This is a manicure breed that blends minimal elegance with playful charm. But why - when nail trends come and go as they do - has this one gone quite so stratospheric? Put simply, it's feminine, low-effort and utterly versatile, but still delivers the quiet elegance and understated luxury that we all want and need right now. Then of course - of course - there's the fact that it aligns with the clean girl aesthetic which continues to reign supreme and go absolutely nowhere fast. Yes, this is the kind of manicure that doesn't shout or scream, but steadily clocks up compliments everywhere from the coffee queue, to cocktails and nursery pickup. Celebrity manicurist Harriet Westmoreland (@harrietwestmoreland) has earned a global reputation for her meticulous work in recent years, and has done much to take minimal manicure trends like this one viral time and time and time again. Queen of the modern French, she has been sliding variations of the soft serve into her summer appointments and social feeds over the last months, keeping her iterations glossy, clean and short. Then of course there's our perennial manicure muse, Hailey Bieber who has been out and about in LA this summer with a soft blend of pinky nude with whisper-white tips. Word has it - just F.Y.I that her go-to picks are OPI Bubble Bath and Funny Bunny. Of course you do! Ask your nail tech for a soft ombré or milky gradient using milky, pastel shades. Or fancy some DIY? Apply two coats of your chosen varnish before adding a dot of creamy white polish onto a sponge and tapping it onto the tip of the nail, building up intensity slowly until you have the seamless gradient required. Finish with a glossy topcoat like Seche Vite instant Gel Effect Top Coat (£9.95, for that irresistible ice cream shine. My personal picks to try this trend? Essie Sugar Daddy, (£8.99, OPI Nail Polish in Funny Bunny and Bubble Bath (£15.60 each, Manucurist Natural Nail Polish in Blossom (£14, Hermes Nail Polish in Rose Coquille, (£46, Biosculpture Nail Polish in Sweet Candy Breath, Peach Whip and Strawberry French (£15.50 each, plus The GelBottle Gels in Daisy and Gloss.

Sorbet Nails Are Quite Literally The Coolest Summer Manicure Trend

I won't pretend sorbet nails are a brand-new trend for summer 2025. Let's be real — they look a lot like the pastel manicures that pop up every spring and summer. But while they're not exactly groundbreaking, there's no denying that the biggest nail artists are obsessed with them right now. From Iram Shelton's shimmering strawberry manicure to Harriet Westmoreland's mint sorbet French tips, sorbet nails provide a cool pop of colour among the wave of neutral princess nails and milky manicures. For the sceptics amongst us, there is a subtle difference between this year's sorbet nails and more traditional pastels: 'Though they're in the same family of soft tones, sorbet shades are slightly more vibrant versions of pastel colours,' explains session manicurist Ami Streets. 'Inspired by their namesake edible summer treat, they're even brighter and juicier, often with a sheer or jelly-like finish that gives a gorgeously glossy and playful vibe.' Think fruity hues inspired by your favourite ice cream flavours, like banana, peach, strawberry or pistachio if you're not sure where to start. How do you wear sorbet nails? Streets points out that sorbet shades lend themselves beautifully to summer nail art looks. 'Soft ombré gradients in sorbet colours are a dreamy nail look for summer. Effortlessly blending shades like pinks and peaches, for example, creates a sun-kissed effect that feels light, airy and totally on-trend,' says Streets. Plus, for the minimalists, French tips, half-moon manis and simple, dainty dot designs are a great way to wear sorbet hues more subtly. Orange Jelly This dewy citrus manicure created by Nail Bar Milwaukee has a beautiful jelly-like texture, which gives it a really playful edge. Recreate it at home with Manucurist's Nail Polish in Pamplemousse, £14. Why pick just one colour when you can wear two? This strawberry milk and lemon sorbet fade created by nail artist Ramon Duran is utterly delicious. We're with this sheer and shimmery delight created by nail artist Iram Shelton, and will be rushing to recreate this combination of soft sparkling base and juicy pink ombré. Peach Cooler Juicy and ultra-glossy, this peach manicure created by nail artist Victoria screams summer. OPI's Infinite Shine Nail Polish in Dreamsicle, £18, has the same sheer, watery feel, but with a touch of shimmer. Lemon Ice Streets pointed to pale yellow being one of the 'huge breakout sorbet hues for spring', and this monochromatic look created by @kkdnails proves that it isn't going anywhere for summer. Try Essie Nail Polish in Summer Soulstice, £8.99, for a similar buttery lemon hue. Aura nails lend themselves beautifully to sorbet hues, as nail artist Zanë Jashari proves with this delicate blush-coloured design. Mint Tips The simplest way to dabble in sorbet shades if you're a minimalist at heart is by switching the colour of your French tips. This punchy mint look by Harriet Westmoreland is so fresh and chic. Try Dior Vernis Nail Polish in Pastel Mint, £29, to get the look at home.
