Heidenheim's Müller could play in season finale but not Saturday
Heidenheim goalkeeper Kevin Mueller is treated behind a tarpaulin during the German Bundesliga soccer match between FC Heidenheim and VfL Bochum at Voith-Arena. Goalkeeper Kevin Mueller may return for relegation-threatened Heidenheim in the last game of the season but will not play on Saturday against Union Berlin. Harry Langer/dpa Goalkeeper Kevin Müller may return for relegation-threatened Heidenheim in the last game of the season but will not play on Saturday against Union Berlin. The 34-year-old was knocked out after a collision during last Friday's game with Bochum and spent several days in hospital with severe concussion symptoms. Advertisement He is now beginning light training exercises and could feature on May 17 against Werder Bremen, making him also an option for a potential relegation play-off. "If things improve a little every day this week with the programme he can follow, then it is not out of the question that he could be back next week," coach Frank Schmidt told reporters on Friday. Heidenheim are third-bottom in the relegation play-off spot before Saturday's game at Union. Frank Feller will deputize as the visitors look for a win which would fend off automatic relegation if Holstein Kiel lose at home to Freiburg. A play-off would be against the third-placed team from the second tier but Heidenheim have not given up on overhauling Hoffenheim or St Pauli, who are five points above them with two to play. Schmidt emphasised that the final two matchdays are "crunch time" for the club.

Heidenheim, Germany, Friday May 2, 2025. (Harry Langer/dpa via AP) BERLIN (AP) — Heidenheim goalkeeper Kevin Müller and Bochum forward Philipp Hofmann were both recovering in hospitals after being seriously injured in their teams' Bundesliga relegation scrap on Friday. Müller had a concussion after being knocked unconscious in a collision with Bochum's Ibrahima Sissoko, Heidenheim said Saturday. Müller had received lengthy treatment on the field while being shielded from view before he was taken off on a stretcher. Advertisement Hofmann broke a rib causing a collapsed lung after a collision with Heidenheim's Marvin Pieringer. Bochum said the injury was 'quite life-threatening.' 'Hofmann owes it to the careful first aid and immediate examinations and treatments at the local hospital that nothing more serious happened,' the club said on its website, adding that the player's lung function was only restored after a minor operation to drain his chest. Hofmann will miss Bochum's remaining two games of the season, while it was uncertain when Müller could return for Heidenheim. The teams' 1-1 draw left Bochum bottom of the Bundesliga with only slim hopes of avoiding the drop, while Heidenheim was four points above Bochum in the relegation playoff place. ___ AP soccer:

(Harry Langer/dpa via AP) HEIDENHEIM, Germany (AP) — Bochum and Heidenheim are both staring relegation in the face after the struggling teams drew 0-0 in a tense Bundesliga encounter on Friday. A defeat would have condemned bottom club Bochum to the drop but a point means it survives at least one more week. Advertisement The Ruhr side remained last in the Bundesliga, equal on points with Kiel. The result was equally frustrating for Heidenheim, which remained third from bottom, four points above Bochum and Kiel, but four behind Hoffenheim, which has a game in hand. Heidenheim lost goalkeeper Kevin Müller to injury in the 50th minute, when he was taken off on a stretcher after a goalmouth clash with Ibrahima Sissoko. ___ AP soccer:

'Playing well doesn't count' - Leverkusen happy to win ugly
Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso gestures on the sidelines during the German Bundesliga soccer match between FC Heidenheim and Bayer Leverkusen at Voith-Arena. Harry Langer/dpa Bayer Leverkusen have a full week to refocus after a shock exit in the German Cup and a modest Bundesliga showing, and must then give an indication that they can still fight for the league title. Defending champions Leverkusen trail leaders Bayern Munich by six points with six games left. The gap could have well been eight points had not Emiliano Buendia scored a stoppage time winner at lowly Heidenheim. Advertisement Leverkusen performed poorly again but at least won on Saturday, not like on Tuesday when they crashed out of the German Cup at third division Arminia Bielefeld. "We had similar problems as in the last game, but after Tuesday it was important to be able to celebrate another success today," coach Xabi Alonso said defiantly. "We are in an important phase of the season, so today it wasn't a question of how, but of what, and that's crucial." Playmaker Granit Xhaka agreed, saying: "All that counts are victories. Playing well doesn't count. We are still in the game." Advertisement Leverkusen next face Union Berlin and St Pauli and could have influential playmaker Florian Wirtz back from injury. Bayern meanwhile have lost playmaker Jamal Musiala and several defenders to injury, and have the heavier schedule as they are still in the Champions League. "We are slowly running of games. Bayern are not stumbling at the moment, we simply have to kick their heels," goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky said.

(Harry Langer/dpa via AP) HEIDENHEIM, Germany (AP) — Emiliano Buendia's stoppage-time winner against Heidenheim boosted Bayer Leverkusen's faint hopes of defending the Bundesliga title on Saturday. Four days after a shock German Cup semifinal loss to third-division Arminia Bielefeld, Leverkusen created few meaningful chances until substitute Buendia curled a shot from outside the penalty area in off the post in the 1-0 win. Advertisement Leverkusen restored a six-point gap to league leader Bayern Munich, which beat Augsburg 3-1 on Friday. Six games remain. Last-minute goals were a headline feature of Leverkusen's Bundesliga-winning campaign last season, but a team once viewed as near unbeatable was largely second best to 16th-placed Heidenheim. At times, Leverkusen seemed headed for what would have been a fifth loss in seven games across competitions. Chukwuemeka ends long wait for a goal Carney Chukwuemeka got his first start and first goal since joining Borussia Dortmund on loan from Chelsea as Freiburg was beaten 4-1. After Karim Adeyemi's goal gave Dortmund the lead, Chukwuemeka hit a shot which took a deflection off a defender and looped over the goalkeeper. Advertisement After injuries disrupted Chukwuemeka's development at Chelsea, the goal was his first in any competition for over a year. Serhou Guirassy and Jamie Gittens also scored in what was one of Dortmund's most commanding performances since Niko Kovac took over as coach just over two months ago. Dortmund is up to eighth in the Bundesliga standings — one place behind Freiburg and four points off the Champions League places — ahead of its Champions League quarterfinal with Barcelona on Wednesday. New Leipzig coach gets a win After a German Cup semifinal loss in his first game, Zsolt Low got his first win as the Leipzig coach, 3-1 over Hoffenheim. Advertisement Initially, it seemed Low's Leipzig was heading for another loss when a blunder by goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi allowed Tom Bischof to score the opening goal for Hoffenheim. However, Benjamin Sesko headed Leipzig level then a red card for Hoffenheim defender Leo Ostigard put Leipzig in control. Ridle Baku gave Leipzig the lead just before halftime and Yussuf Poulsen made it 3-1 late. Ermedin Demirovic scored a hat trick as Stuttgart swept aside relegation-threatened Bochum 4-0. Mainz hit a setback in its bid to qualify for the Champions League, drawing with last-placed Holstein Kiel 1-1. Eintracht Frankfurt visits Werder Bremen later Saturday. ___ AP soccer:
