The 34-year-old was knocked out after a collision during last Friday's game with Bochum and spent several days in hospital with severe concussion symptoms.

He is now beginning light training exercises and could feature on May 17 against Werder Bremen, making him also an option for a potential relegation play-off.
"If things improve a little every day this week with the programme he can follow, then it is not out of the question that he could be back next week," coach Frank Schmidt told reporters on Friday.
Heidenheim are third-bottom in the relegation play-off spot before Saturday's game at Union. Frank Feller will deputize as the visitors look for a win which would fend off automatic relegation if Holstein Kiel lose at home to Freiburg.
A play-off would be against the third-placed team from the second tier but Heidenheim have not given up on overhauling Hoffenheim or St Pauli, who are five points above them with two to play.
Schmidt emphasised that the final two matchdays are "crunch time" for the club.

Mayor would build town hall balcony if Elversberg get promoted

Elversberg fans stand in their block during the German 2nd Bundesliga soccer match between Eintracht Braunschweig and SV Elversberg, at Eintracht Stadium. The mayor of Spiesen-Elversberg said that the city would build a balcony in the town hall for celebrations in the event SV Elversberg gets promoted to the Bundesliga. Swen Pförtner/dpa The mayor of Spiesen-Elversberg said that the city would build a balcony in the town hall for celebrations in the event SV Elversberg gets promoted to the Bundesliga. "There's no town hall balcony. We don't have one, but we would build one. If we have to, believe me, we can do it," mayor Bernd Huf said. Advertisement In Germany, football clubs traditionally celebrate their titles and other major achievements from the town hall balcony while surrounded by fans. Elversberg will face Heidenheim, who finished the Bundesliga in 16th, in the away first leg on Thursday ahead of the second leg next Monday for a chance to play in the Bundesliga. They would be the first club in the Bundesliga from Saarland in 32 years after the much larger Saarbrücken were relegated in 1993. It is just their second season in the second division after spending only one in the third tier, after promotion from the fourth division in 2022. Advertisement The club are from the municipality of Spiesen-Elversberg, which has a population of around 13,000 and no train station, in the south-western Saarland state. Their average attendance is 9,000 fans per game. Huf admitted that a lot of work would have to be done if the club gets promoted to the top tier, "but that was clear to everyone. We would have to do that even if we stayed in the second division." For him, the "biggest step the club has taken was promotion to the second division" to play alongside German giants such as Cologne, Nuremberg, Hamburg SV and Dusseldorf.

(AP Photo/Martin Meissner), File) LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Liverpool has agreed to pay a transfer fee of 116 million pounds ($157 million) for attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, British media reported Friday. The deal for the 22-year-old Germany international includes a guaranteed 100 million pounds plus 16 million pounds in add-ons, which if achieved would make it a British record. Advertisement The Premier League record for an initial fee was set when Chelsea signed Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for 106.7 million pounds ($131.4 million at the time) in 2023. Later that summer, Chelsea then agreed to pay up to 115 million pounds ($146 million at the time) — with 100 million pounds up front — for midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton. British media including the BBC reported the Wirtz fee — which would be a Liverpool record — without citing a source. Sky Sports reported the fee to be 116.5 million pounds. Wirtz's move has been expected for several weeks and the player has seemed to confirm it himself on his Instagram account, dismissing reports he asked for the No. 10 shirt held by Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. Advertisement Wirtz is expected to undergo a medical in the coming days ahead of the signing. Liverpool is aiming to build a dynasty after winning the Premier League title this season. Wirtz would reunite with former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong after the Dutch right back signed for Liverpool for a reported 35 to 40 million euros ($39.7 million to $45.4 million) last month. Wirtz only turned 22 last month but has been a key first-team player for Leverkusen since he was 17. He was the star attacking player in the team that won the Bundesliga and German Cup in 2023-24 without losing a game. ___ AP soccer:

Dortmund reject Chelsea's offer for Jamie Gittens

Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens celebrates his side's first goal of the game during the German Bundesliga soccer match between Borussia Moenchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund at Borussia-Park stadium. Federico Gambarini/dpa Borussia Dortmund have rejected a offer from Chelsea for their winger Jamie Gittens. "We spoke over the phone, but in the end we didn't come to an agreement because we have different ideas about the player's current value," Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl said on Wednesday in a press conference. Advertisement According to media reports, Chelsea have offered €55 million ($63.08 million) for the player. Instead of a move to the Premier League, the 20-year-old Gittens will play for Dortmund at the Club World Cup in the United States from June 14 to July 13. "Jamie definitely makes our team better. We're glad he's here," Kehl said. However, Gittens himself reportedly has already reached an agreement with the London club and a move to England after the Club World Cup is not off the table. "We're in a good exchange and we'll see how things develop in the future," Kehl said. Gittens has a contract with Dortmund until 2028 and the German club is reportedly demanding €65 million to release him. "I assume that his market value will not fall," Kehl said.
