The 34-year-old was knocked out after a collision during last Friday's game with Bochum and spent several days in hospital with severe concussion symptoms. Advertisement He is now beginning light training exercises and could feature on May 17 against Werder Bremen, making him also an option for a potential relegation play-off. "If things improve a little every day this week with the programme he can follow, then it is not out of the question that he could be back next week," coach Frank Schmidt told reporters on Friday. Heidenheim are third-bottom in the relegation play-off spot before Saturday's game at Union. Frank Feller will deputize as the visitors look for a win which would fend off automatic relegation if Holstein Kiel lose at home to Freiburg. A play-off would be against the third-placed team from the second tier but Heidenheim have not given up on overhauling Hoffenheim or St Pauli, who are five points above them with two to play. Schmidt emphasised that the final two matchdays are "crunch time" for the club.

Mueller, who joined Heidenheim in 2015 and has started every league game for the relegation-threatened club this season, collided with Bochum's Ibrahima Sissoko in the 50th minute of the goalless draw on Friday. "It is not clear how long Kevin Mueller will be out for," Heidenheim said in a statement. Heidenheim, who earned a promotion to the Bundesliga in 2023, are 16th with two matches left and risk going into the relegation playoffs as they sit four points below 15th-placed Hoffenheim who have played a game less.

Harry Langer/dpa Heidenheim goalkeeper Kevin Müller has suffered a concussion in a heavy collision during their match against Bochum, the Bundesliga club said on Saturday. Heidenheim said the diagnosis was made late Friday in hospital and that it is not clear yet how long Müller will be sidelined. Advertisement Müller, 34, and Bochum player Ibrahima Sissoko collided in the 50th minute of Friday's 0-0 draw. Müller was briefly knocked unconscious and was treated for some 10 minutes on the pitch before being taken off on a stretcher and to hospital. Sissoko was able to play on. "That was a classic knock-out and we hope that he will return soon," coach Frank Schmidt said post-match. Heidenheim are third last and have two games remaining in the season. The incident came two weeks after a similarly nasty colission between RB Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi and Holstein Kiel player David Zec, in which both were concussed.
