Wrexham confirm signing of midfielder Lewis O'Brien from Nottingham Forest

Lewis O'Brien has left Nottingham Forest to join Championship side Wrexham. The 26-year-old midfielder has led a nomadic existence since joining then newly promoted Forest in the summer of 2022, in a £10million package deal from Huddersfield, which also included Harry Toffolo. O'Brien has made 17 appearances for Forest, including six Premier League starts, amid loan spells with DC United, Middlesbrough, Los Angeles FC and Swansea. And he remained surplus to requirements under Nuno Espirito Santo, as Forest prepare for their fourth season back in the top flight. But he will now join Wrexham, who will compete in the second tier for the first time in 40 years in the coming campaign, after securing their third consecutive promotion. 'I'm absolutely buzzing. It's been a long time coming, but to be here is great,' O'Brien said in a statement on Wrexham's website. 'The last couple of years has been a whirlwind for me and my family, but to sign a long-term contract and find somewhere I can call home is a great feeling. Advertisement 'After speaking to everyone here, it's a club with a lot of ambition. I want to be part of that journey, and take Wrexham to where they want to be.' The Welsh side, managed by Phil Parkinson, will view O'Brien's experience in the Championship – where he has played with three different clubs – as a valuable asset.

As well as Toffolo, the Ibrox side has been linked with Leicester defender Conor Coady, Southampton playmaker Flynn Downes and Maccabi Tel Aviv striker Dor Turgeman. A statement on Toffolo from Nottingham Forest read: 'Nottingham Forest can confirm that Harry Toffolo will depart the Club upon the expiration of his contract this summer. 'Since his arrival from Huddersfield Town in 2022, Toffolo has made an invaluable contribution not only on the pitch, but also off it. 'Toffolo also attended a number of Community Trust's Soccer Schools visits, helping to inspire the next generation of aspiring footballers, and his off-the-pitch contributions were rightly recognised as he was named the Club's PFA Community Champion in the 2023/24 season. 'Toffolo, who made a total of 57 appearances for Forest, produced an outstanding goal-line clearance in Forest's 2-1 away victory at Tottenham Hotspur in April – a win that proved to be crucial in the Reds' pursuit of European football for the first time in 30 years. 'The defender's first and only goal for the Club in a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers in December 2023 meant that he has scored in each of England's top four divisions, outlining his impressive rise up the footballing pyramid.

'Club has given me so much' - emotional Toffolo leaves Forest

In his final interview as a Nottingham Forest player, Harry Toffolo thanked the fans and admitted it is tough to leave a club that has given him so much. The 29-year-old confirmed earlier this month he would not be extending his contract. Advertisement Toffolo joined the Reds in 2022 after Forest won promotion to the Premier League and went on to make 50 appearances for the club. "It was easy at the start really because I've been on holiday, but now I've come back and seen the city. You see the familiar faces - people you have built relationships with. They've come into your life at an important time - I've helped them and they've helped me," an emotional Toffolo told Forest TV. "It's tough but wherever I go next, I'm excited for the future. I'm very, very grateful for this football club. It moved me when I was driving through the gate into the players' car park for probably the last time. "This football club has given me so much. The fans... you have no idea what you have done [for me]." Advertisement Forest finished seventh in the Premier League last season and secured European football in the process, with the Conference League coming to the City Ground next season. And although he is leaving, Toffolo is optimistic about the future for the club. "The facilities are incredible and you can really see a Premier League club now that's only going to get stronger and stronger. The club really has come a long way."
