4 murders in 3 years: How 2 Rohtak gangsters sparked a deadly rivalry

Rohtak: A deadly gang war that began over a car dispute six years ago claimed its fourth life in Rohtak in three years on Saturday. Ankit's associate Hansraj purchased a bus and sought security from Himanshu's gang to manage scuffles during operations. In return, Himanshu demanded a car, which was purchased on loan using documents from Ankit's family. When EMIs defaulted, the car was asked to be returned, but Himanshu's gang refused, and hostilities escalated. In 2019, Himanshu shot at Ankit's brother Sunny during a stadium altercation. Arrested, Himanshu fled from a juvenile home. Ankit, in retaliation, expanded his gang and began targeting Himanshu's allies, sparking a series of revenge killings and extortion rackets. On March 2, 2022, Ankit's gang killed Himanshu's cousin Rohit alias Bajrang. Another villager, Rajender, was also shot dead when he tried to intervene. In retaliation, Himanshu's men murdered Ankit's associate Hansraj just five days later. Himanshu, by then operating under the alias "Bhau" fled India on a fake passport and is currently residing in the US, still orchestrating operations remotely. Ankit and his brother Sunny are in jail but reportedly continue to run their gang from behind bars. The latest killing of Ankit's uncle Anil, who was involved in earlier criminal surveillance, was allegedly carried out on Himanshu's orders, according to local sources. The Bhau gang reportedly controls half of Ritoli village and has operatives across states, while the Baba gang comprises 25–30 members in the village and over 150 in surrounding regions. Haryana liquor vend auctions under criminal cloud, police to up vigil

Chandigarh: Taking note of gangsters and small-time criminals firing gunshots to intimdate people participating in the auction of liquor vends, Haryana Police have announced that they would enhance the deployment of emergency response vehicles (ERVs), which are units that respond to emergency calls made to the police control room. Police have also that they have identified 4,900 notorious elements, including persons with a criminal history, to be put under direct surveillance to check their movement and activities to prevent crimes and anti-social activities. All this came to light during a meeting chaired by Haryana director general of police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapoor with senior officials on Sunday evening. During the meeting, he issued directions to officers to enhance the operational efficiency of ERVs. He said ERVs were the "face" of Haryana Police, and their primary responsibility was to respond promptly and act effectively upon receiving information about any incident. It was informed in the meeting that approximately 4,000 police personnel are deployed with ERVs in the state. The DGP said a technical audit of ERV operations was necessary and suggested that technical support could be sought from the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC). He instructed senior officers to regularly inspect ERVs and assess key metrics such as response time, time of arrival at the incident spot, and the subsequent action taken. The DGP issued clear instructions that strict legal action must be taken under a policy of zero tolerance against offenders. "Anyone exploiting the public, issuing threats, or engaging in illegal extortion must face stringent legal consequences," the DGP said in the meeting. Top excise officer names 4 districts Haryana commissioner and secretary (excise and taxation) Ashima Brar also participated in the meeting chaired by DGP Shatrujeet Kapoor on Sunday. Kolkata Police defend arrest of influencer over ‘hate speech'

Kolkata Police have defended the arrest of social media influencer and law student Sharmistha Panoli, stating that the posts made by her amounted to 'hate speech' and should not be conflated with freedom of expression. The arrest has sparked political outrage, with the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing the Mamata Banerjee-led government of 'state-sponsored repression'. BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia termed the arrest 'shameful'. 'Mamata Banerjee's police travelled nearly 1,500 kilometres from Kolkata to arrest law student Sharmistha Panoli – just because she had expressed her opinion, for which she had publicly apologised!' he wrote in a post on social media platform X. Some social media accounts are spreading false information that Kolkata Police has unlawfully arrested a law student for opposing Pakistan. This narrative is mischievous and misleading. Expressing national pride and patriotism is a thing that every citizen and organisation… — Kolkata Police (@KolkataPolice) June 1, 2025 Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, also voiced his support for Ms. Panoli, alleging that punitive action in the State is selectively directed 'only against Sanatani Hindus'. Online campaigns under hashtags such as #ReleaseSharmistha and #FreeSharmistha have gained traction, with supporters questioning the legality of Kolkata Police's action in arresting a woman residing in Gurugram, and the role of Haryana Police in the process. According to the police, Ms. Panoli, a resident of the Anandapur area in Kolkata, had been absconding since an FIR was registered against her at Garden Reach Police Station on May 15. She was arrested from Gurugram on May 30. In a statement issued on Sunday, Kolkata Police said that 'multiple accounts on social media are spreading misinformation' by portraying the arrest as unlawful. They asserted that the arrest was not linked to her 'opposing Pakistan', but rather due to a video 'insulting to the religious belief of a class of citizens of India' and one that promoted 'disharmony and hatred between different communities'. The case pertains to a video Ms. Panoli shared on social media following the recent Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives. In the video, she made remarks deemed anti-Islamic and used offensive language while referring to Pakistan, also making unsubstantiated claims about 'Operation Sindoor'. She later issued an apology on May 15, the day the FIR was lodged. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said on Monday, June 2, 'This is a complete provocation, a deliberate trap. Such poisonous instigation is feared to have a very bad impact on the public. Therefore, there is no comparison with this post. Hence, according to the law, police action has been taken.' Speaking to The Hindu, Ms. Panoli's lawyer, Mohammad Shamim, said, 'She is in judicial custody till June 13. Her bail plea was rejected because the court said that the investigation is still at a nascent stage and they wanted to give time to the officers to investigate the matter.'

An official statement issued here said that during the meeting officials informed that approximately 4,000 police personnel are deployed on ERVs across the state. 28 Bangladeshis arrested from Dinhata station while trying to return home

Jalpaiguri: Police arrested 28 Bangladeshi nationals, including eight women and nine minors, from Dinhata railway station early on Friday, intending to cross over into Bangladesh. A preliminary probe revealed that the group was fleeing Haryana, where a recent drive to round up illegal Bangladeshi citizens had spooked them. Police said several of the arrested Bangladeshis had crossed into India 22 years ago. All of them had settled in Haryana, where they worked as daily labourers in brick kilns. They got married there and had eight children. A sudden drive by Haryana Police last year to identify and arrest illegal Bangladeshi nationals, which led to the arrest of over 100 Bangladeshis, rattled them so much that they tried to flee. The group left Haryana and took refuge in Bihar, where they lived for the past 10 months. As the drive against Bangladeshi intruders intensified in other parts of the country, they planned to return to Kurigram in Bangladesh. Accordingly, they took a train to Siliguri, and then another train to reach Cooch Behar's Dinhata. Their plan was to cross over to Bangladesh with the help of agents. However, their presence outside the station at that odd hour drew the attention of locals, who informed police. An interrogation exposed their identity. "Prima facie, it seems they were trying to return to Bangladesh and came to Dinhata with that intention. Further interrogation will reveal how they were planning a return and who else is involved," said Cooch Behar ASP Krishna Gopal Meena. In Feb, Union home minister Amit Shah had directed authorities to speed up operations against the entire network assisting illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants in entering and staying in the country through forged documents.
