Joint Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit issues statement on Gaza
The Ministerial Committee mandated by the Joint Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit on developments in the Gaza Strip expressed their strong condemnation and categorical rejection, on Saturday, of Israel's announcement of its intention to impose full military control over the Gaza Strip. The statement read in full read: "We consider this announcement a dangerous and unacceptable escalation, a flagrant violation of international law, and an attempt to entrench the illegal occupation and impose a fait accompli/ facts on the ground by force, in contravention of international legitimacy. "We affirm that this declared course of action by Israel constitutes a continuation of its grave violations, including killing and starvation, attempts at forced displacement and annexation of Palestinian land, settler terrorism, which are crimes that may amount to crimes against humanity. Such actions obliterate any opportunity for peace, undermine regional and international efforts towards de-escalation and peaceful resolution of the conflict, and exacerbate the severe violations against the Palestinian people, who have faced for nearly two years a comprehensive aggression and blockade affecting all aspects of life in the Gaza Strip, alongside serious violations in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. "In light of this dangerous development, we assert the following: • The immediate and comprehensive cessation of the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip, and an end to the ongoing violations committed by the occupying forces against civilians and civilian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. • The demand that Israel, as the occupying power, immediately and unconditionally allow the entry of humanitarian assistance at scale into the Gaza Strip — including food, medicine, and fuel — and ensure the freedom of operation of relief agencies and international humanitarian organisations, in accordance with international humanitarian law and its applicable principles. • Support for the efforts undertaken by the Arab Republic of Egypt, the State of Qatar, and the United States of America to achieve a ceasefire and reach an agreement for the exchange of prisoners and hostages, as a fundamental humanitarian entry point to de-escalation, alleviating suffering, and ending the aggression. • The immediate commencement of the implementation of the Arab-Islamic reconstruction plan of the Gaza Strip, and the call for active participation in the upcoming reconstruction conference to be held in Cairo. • Rejection and condemnation of all attempts to displace the Palestinian people from their land in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the affirmation of the need to preserve the legal and historical status quo in the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, while recognizing the key role of the Hashemite Custodianship in this regard. • The affirmation that a just and lasting peace can only be achieved through the implementation of the two-State solution, ensuring the realization of an independent Palestinian State on the 4 June 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the principles of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions. Arab Summit voices ‘full' support for Hashemite custodianship of Jerusalem
By JT , AFP - May 17,2025 - Last updated at May 17,2025 Arab leaders attend the opening session of the 34th Arab League summit in Baghdad on May 17, 2025 (AFP photo) AMMAN/BAGHDAD —The final joint statement of the Arab Summit, which concluded on Saturday in Baghdad, reiterated 'full' support for the Hashemite custodianship of Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites. The statement also underlined the Hashemite custodianship's 'pivotal role in protecting Jerusalem's identity,' the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Arab leaders also hailed the Restoring Hope Initiative, which was launched in September last year in the Gaza Strip, under Royal directives, to provide prosthetic limbs to those who have been disabled due to the ongoing war. The leaders urged the international community to press for a Gaza ceasefire, as Israel launched an expanded military offensive in the Palestinian territory, AFP reported. In the final statement, Arab League members also called for funding to back their Gaza reconstruction plan, after US President Donald Trump reiterated a proposal to take over the strip. The Arab leaders called "on the international community... to exert pressure to end the bloodshed and ensure that urgent humanitarian aid can enter without obstacles all areas in need in Gaza." They also said that they "firmly" rejected any plans to displace Palestinians. It came hours after Israel's military launched a new Gaza offensive, saying it was part of "the expansion of the battle in the Gaza Strip" aimed at defeating Palestinian militant group Hamas. Appearing at the summit as a guest, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez appealed for increased pressure "to halt the massacre in Gaza,' according to Petra. Egypt's President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi urged his US counterpart Donald Trump to "apply all necessary efforts... for a ceasefire". United Nations chief Antonio Guterres told the summit that "we need a permanent ceasefire, now". Guterres said he was "alarmed by reported plans by Israel to expand ground operations and more". "We reject the repeated displacement of the Gaza population, along with any question of forced displacement outside of Gaza." During a press conference, he urged an end to Israel's aid blockade on Gaza. "A policy of siege and starvation makes a mockery of international law," Guterres said. 'Unacceptable number' Sanchez, who has sharply criticised the Israeli offensive, said world leaders should "intensify our pressure on Israel to halt the massacre in Gaza, particularly through the channels afforded to us by international law". He said his government planned a UN resolution demanding an International Court of Justice ruling on Israel's war methods. The "unacceptable number" of war victims in Gaza violates the "principle of humanity", he said. The summit came days after a tour of the Gulf by Trump, who has sparked uproar by declaring the United States could take over Gaza and turn it into the "Riviera of the Middle East". The scheme that included the proposed displacement of Palestinians was widely condemned, and prompted Arab leaders to come up with an alternative plan to rebuild the territory at a March summit in Cairo. During his visit to the region, Trump reiterated that he wanted the United States to "take" Gaza and turn it into a "freedom zone". Iraq's Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani told the summit his country backed the creation of an "Arab fund to support reconstruction efforts" after crises in the region. He pledged $20 million to reconstruct Gaza and a similar amount for Lebanon, after an all-out war between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah. Israel has continued to launch strikes on Lebanon despite the November 27 truce. Syria Iraq only recently regained a semblance of normality after decades of devastating conflict and turmoil, and its leaders view the summit as an opportunity to project an image of stability. Baghdad last hosted an Arab League summit in 2012, during the early stages of the civil war in neighbouring Syria, which in December entered a new chapter with the overthrow of longtime ruler Bashar Al Assad. In Riyadh this week, Trump met Syria's interim President Ahmed Al Sharaa, whose Islamist group spearheaded the offensive that toppled Assad. He also said he would lift sanctions on Syria, which were mainly imposed during Assad's rule. Arab leaders welcomed the decision and said the sanctions impacted Syria's reconstruction efforts. Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shaibani represented Syria, one of many countries to send ministerial-level delegations instead of leaders.

JPA condemns ‘baseless' allegations against Jordanian relief efforts in Gaza
By JT - May 09,2025 - Last updated at May 09,2025 AMMAN — The Jordanian Press Association (JPA) has condemned 'baseless allegations' against the Kingdom's humanitarian efforts in Gaza by a London-based news website. In a statement issued on Friday, JPA said the report published by the website lacked credibility and integrity, with no reliable sources. The association described the report as a 'failed attempt to undermine Jordan's humanitarian efforts,' particularly those related to the Kingdom's support for Palestinians in Gaza. The statement, a copy of which was sent to The Jordan Times, reaffirmed Jordan's historical support for the Palestinian cause and its role in safeguarding Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem under the Hashemite custodianship. The statement highlighted the Kingdom's humanitarian efforts in Gaza, noting that the Jordan Armed Forces carried out independent air and ground aid missions in the war-torn Strip, as the international community was struggling to respond. 'These heroic and humanitarian efforts reflect Jordan's steadfast position,' JPA said, while dismissing the recent media attacks as part of an 'orchestrated smear campaign' against backed by external funding. Such campaigns, the association said, aim to distort Jordan's firm humanitarian and pan-Arab stances, especially since the start of efforts to break the blockade on Gaza. Reaffirming its support for both official and popular efforts to aid Palestinians in Gaza, the association called on Jordanians to remain united and vigilant against what it described as a 'misleading media offensive targeting Jordan's pivotal regional role.'
