Govt. issues notification upgrading Hassan CMC to corporation
The State government has issued a notification upgrading the Hassan City Municipal Council into a corporation. The Urban Development Department, on April 28, had issued the notification specifying the boundaries of the larger urban area.
The total area is 86.01 sqkm. It includes 35 wards of the previous CMC area and villages Satyamangala, Haralahalli, Doddahonnenahalli, Yediyur, Chikkahonnenahalli, Tamlapura, Chikka Kodagula, Mavinahalli, B. Katihalli, B. Katihalli Koplu, Sankenahalli, S.M. Krishna Nagar, Boovanahalli, B.T. Koplu, Gavenahalli, Guddenahalli, Gudenahalli Koplu, Manachanahalli, Yarehalli, Vijayanagar Extension, Doddamandiganahalli, Devarayapatna, Bittagodanahalli, Sankalapura, Nagathihalli, Hullenahalli, Narihalli, Thattekere, Kokanaghatta, Bushenahalli, Kasturavalli, Kenehattihalli, Gekaravalli, Samudravalli, Doddapura and Uddoor.
For the past several years, there has been a demand from elected representatives of Hassan to declare the urban area as a corporation. The State Cabinet, which met on October 28, 2024, decided to upgrade the city into a corporation. The CM had announced the Cabinet's decision during his visit to Hassan the same day.
The Urban Development Department issued a notification inviting objections and suggestions from the public on January 21. The public had 30 days to respond. According to the final notification, the objections received were considered. The notification was issued as per the provisions under the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act, 1976.
Criteria considered
The larger urban area, whose population is not less than three lakh and whose density of population is not less than 3,000 inhabitants per sqkm, can be declared a corporation. Other criteria include that revenue generated should not be less than ₹6 crore per annum and the percentage of employment in non-agricultural activities is not less than 50% of the total employment.
