Sewage works begin in Saraya Abu Quwah after 24-year wait
Work is now in motion to lay a sewage network in Saraya Abu Quwah, Block 457, after a wait stretching back 24 years. The scheme will serve 875 properties and, according to the Ministry of Works, is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2027. The cost stands at BD5.7 million. Minister of Works Ibrahim Al Hawaj said the project forms part of a wider push to improve the nuts and bolts of public infrastructure across Bahrain, with the aim of keeping pace with growing urban demand. The move follows repeated calls by MP Hassan Ibrahim, who said residents had long relied on tankers and paid monthly out of pocket for basic waste services. He said he spent two years raising the issue with both the Ministry of Works and the Ministry of Finance. State budget He credited Finance and National Economy Minister, His Excellency Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, with advancing the matter and securing the project's inclusion in the 2025 to 2026 state budget. The Works Ministry, he added, has already connected large parts of the Northern Governorate to the sewage grid. The rest of Block 457 will be covered based on technical readiness, the number of existing properties, and the availability of funds. Mr Ibrahim called for clear schedules and better coordination across service agencies to avoid similar hold-ups. He said the ministry was continuing to push ahead with infrastructure plans across various areas, guided by the current list of priorities.

Sudan's military retakes more key government buildings in capital as it consolidates gains
Sudan's military has consolidated its gains in the capital, taking more key government buildings a day after it seized control of the presidential palace. The ongoing conflict in Sudan erupted in April 2023 when a power struggle between the leaders of the military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) boiled over into open fighting in Khartoum and other cities. At the start of the war, the RSF took over multiple government and military buildings in the capital, including the Republican Palace and the headquarters of the state television. The force also occupied people's houses. Brigadier General Nabil Abdullah, a spokesperson for the Sudanese military, said troops have now expelled the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) from the headquarters of the Central Bank of Sudan and other government and educational buildings in the area. The military also retook the headquarters of the National Intelligence Service and Corinthia Hotel in central Khartoum. Hundreds of RSF fighters were killed as they tried to flee the city, while Lieutenant Colonel Hassan Ibrahim, from the military's media office, was also killed in the attack, the military said. The RSF has not yet commented. A drone attack on the palace on Friday - believed to have been launched by the RSF - killed two journalists and a driver with Sudanese state television, according to the ministry of information. 1:07 On Friday, social media videos showed military soldiers inside the palace. A Sudanese military officer wearing a captain's epaulettes made the announcement in a video and confirmed the troops were inside the compound. The Republican Palace was the seat of government before the war began, but now appears to be partly in ruins. The military is now likely to try to retake the Khartoum International Airport, only a short distance from the palace, which has been held by the RSF since the start of the war, with video showing soldiers on a road leading to the airport. The war has killed more than 28,000 people - although other estimates suggest this is higher - forced millions to flee their homes and left some families desperately resorting to eating grass to survive, with famine sweeping through parts of the country. The fighting has resulted in atrocities including mass rape and ethnically motivated killings, with war crimes and crimes against humanity taking place, according to the United Nations and international rights groups.

Sudan's war has raged since 2023 and the RSF took most of the capital, rampaging through streets, looting properties and causing tens of thousands of people to flee. Ye the group, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has been beaten back across much of central and southern Sudan in recent months as the army, headed by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, makes gains. Videos posted to social media on Friday showed scenes of Sudanese soldiers wielding rifles and rocket-propelled grenades celebrating in front of the palace in Khartoum. Various foreign powers have backed each side in the war and at least 150,000 people have been killed. Both sides have been sanctioned by the West for war crimes in a conflict that has become the world's biggest humanitarian crisis, with more than 12 million people displaced. The army said in a statement on Tuesday it had carried out 'special operations on several fronts' in recent days to oust the RSF from key positions in the capital. (Updates with details throughout.) Green light for call to expand AI use across state entities in Bahrain
Bahrain - An urgent proposal calling for the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) use across government ministries and the automation of public services to improve efficiency and governance was provisionally approved yesterday. The proposal by five MPs, led by foreign affairs, defence and national security committee vice-chairman MP Hassan Ibrahim, was forwarded to the relevant committees for review by Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam. They will have to take into account the number of jobs that would be lost by its introduction and consider whether there would be any security risks, although the Speaker pointed out that AI uses were becoming a vital element when it comes to cost control and quality of services. 'Artificial intelligence has proven to be a powerful tool in improving service quality and increasing government efficiency,' he stated. 'Expanding its use across government entities will accelerate service delivery, reduce administrative and financial burdens and enhance accuracy and transparency in governance.' He underscored AI's role as a fundamental tool for institutional performance enhancement. 'In advanced nations, governments rely on AI to analyse vast amounts of data, develop proactive solutions for various challenges, and make more accurate and effective decisions. 'Given Bahrain's ongoing digital transformation efforts, it is imperative to deploy AI more broadly across all government agencies, including those providing direct and indirect services to citizens.' According to Mr Ibrahim, AI enables unprecedented capabilities in data analysis and decision-making. 'Intelligent systems can be developed to process government data with high precision, providing insights that help officials craft policies based on scientific principles,' he said. 'One of AI's most significant benefits is its ability to enhance transparency and combat corruption. AI-powered financial data analysis systems can monitor government transactions and detect unusual patterns that may indicate violations or financial irregularities.' He added that AI can be employed in internal audits of government accounts, promoting integrity and ensuring optimal use of public funds. 'It can then generate periodic reports identifying areas that require improvement,' he added. Copyright 2022 Al Hilal Publishing and Marketing Group Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (
