Sewage works begin in Saraya Abu Quwah after 24-year wait

Daily Tribune6 days ago

Work is now in motion to lay a sewage network in Saraya Abu Quwah, Block 457, after a wait stretching back 24 years.
The scheme will serve 875 properties and, according to the Ministry of Works, is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2027. The cost stands at BD5.7 million.
Minister of Works Ibrahim Al Hawaj said the project forms part of a wider push to improve the nuts and bolts of public infrastructure across Bahrain, with the aim of keeping pace with growing urban demand.
The move follows repeated calls by MP Hassan Ibrahim, who said residents had long relied on tankers and paid monthly out of pocket for basic waste services. He said he spent two years raising the issue with both the Ministry of Works and the Ministry of Finance.
State budget
He credited Finance and National Economy Minister, His Excellency Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, with advancing the matter and securing the project's inclusion in the 2025 to 2026 state budget.
The Works Ministry, he added, has already connected large parts of the Northern Governorate to the sewage grid.
The rest of Block 457 will be covered based on technical readiness, the number of existing properties, and the availability of funds.
Mr Ibrahim called for clear schedules and better coordination across service agencies to avoid similar hold-ups. He said the ministry was continuing to push ahead with infrastructure plans across various areas, guided by the current list of priorities.

Kuwait Mulls Raising Government Fees On 10,000 Services

Kuwait is considering a major revision of fees across more than 10,000 government services in a move aimed at boosting fiscal sustainability and strengthening non-oil revenues. The proposal, discussed at a high-level meeting at the National Library Theater, follows a Cabinet directive to reassess cost recovery mechanisms throughout the public sector. According to sources familiar with the matter, the Ministry of Finance presented a detailed review estimating that the potential fee adjustments could generate KD400 million ($1.3 billion) to KD 500 million annually for the state treasury. The proposed changes would cover a broad spectrum of services, ranging from the issuance of official certificates to the provision of public utilities. The Ministry outlined a three-pillar framework for the reassessment: Calculating the actual cost of service delivery, setting appropriate adjustment margins based on service type and importance, and evaluating the social impact to ensure affordability and equity. Each government entity has been instructed to conduct its own cost review and submit recommendations to the Ministry of Finance. These findings will be consolidated and presented to the Council of Ministers for final approval. While boosting non-oil income is a core goal, officials have stressed that maintaining access to essential services and preserving social balance will guide the final decision.

Bahrain to build flyover connecting key bridges in Muharraq

Bahrain's Works Minister Ebrahim bin Hassan Al Hawaj has announced plans to begin construction on a new flyover connecting Shaikh Isa bin Salman Bridge with Avenue 105 in Busaiteen. The project is part of the ongoing development of the Muharraq Ring Road and the Fourth Bridge initiative, which aims to improve traffic flow in Muharraq Governorate, the minister said. The project involves building a dual-lane flyover in each direction to channel traffic from Manama via Shaikh Isa bin Salman Bridge onto the Muharraq Ring Road along Avenue 105 in Busaiteen. It will also facilitate traffic movement from the Ring Road towards Muharraq city, easing traffic between Manama and Muharraq following the opening of the Muharraq Ring Road in late 2024. The flyover is expected to improve connectivity between the capital and Muharraq, as well as nearby areas such as Busaiteen, Al Sayah, and Diyar Al Muharraq, while reducing congestion at the Shaikh Isa bin Salman Bridge and Al Ghous Street junction. The Ministry of Works has urged road users to cooperate with traffic diversions and guidance for public safety. -TradeArabia News Service. The project will be executed by Nass Contracting.
