Binghamton firefighters rescue dog from river island
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A golden retriever is safe at home with her family after being rescued from an island in the Susquehanna River.
Members of the Binghamton Fire Department gave Winnie a boat ride to shore on Thursday afternoon.
On Wednesday morning at about 11:30, a member of the Hatala family was preparing to take the 3-year-old English cream golden retriever for a walk when the dog spotted some Canadian geese and chased after them, crossing their invisible fence.
The Hatala's launched a full-scale search near their home on Binghamton's Westside and received reports that Winnie was spotted swimming in the river.
After the dog spent Wednesday night on an island in the river, a Binghamton Police drone was able to locate Winnie, and firefighters launched their rescue craft.
Winnie and the Hatala family were overjoyed by the reunion, with Winnie wagging her tail before curling up for a long nap.
The Hatala's say they plan to take Winnie to visit the fire station with a thank you gift in the near future.
