Ceremony held in Taiwan to remember Japanese engineer Hatta Yoichi
More than 500 people from Japan and Taiwan have gathered to remember Hatta Yoichi, a Japanese engineer who contributed to the development of agriculture in Taiwan.
People in Taiwan highly appreciated the engineer, who was from central Japan's Ishikawa Prefecture. Hatta built a large dam and irrigation facilities in southern Taiwan nearly 100 years ago. At that time, Taiwan was under Japanese rule.
A ceremony to commemorate the anniversary of Hatta's death took place on Thursday at a park near the dam in Tainan City.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te was among the participants. He noted that the dam irrigates farmland. Lai said he feels that it also fills the hearts of Taiwanese and Japanese people. The president added that he particularly treasures that aspect of the structure.
Lai expressed hope that the friendly relations between Taiwan and Japan will be further strengthened. He said the ties between the two are similar to those that exist between family members.
