Federally protected since 1985, this crucial preserve has earned widespread recognition with naturalists thanks to its high-quality montane rainforest habitats, with a wealth of native birds, reptiles and insects flourishing within the region. The ʻakiapōlāʻau, Hawaiʻi ʻakepa and nēnē are just a few of the indigenous avian species that might make an appearance for birders, while one of the archipelago's few native mammals—the Hawaiian hoary bat—calls the park home as well. Hilo is the largest city on the island of Hawaiʻi. Upon arrival, visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the shoreline and bask in the beauty of the many palm trees, while tiny fish and crustaceans can be found thriving within its natural rock pools—but there's one animal in particular that draws visitors to Punaluʻu Beach in droves. Sea turtles are a common sight at the water's edge, with both green and hawksbill varieties found lounging along the sand from morning to dusk. Hawai'i Island is both the largest and youngest of the major Hawaiian islands. While Hawaiʻi has long earned acclaim for its lush landscapes, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park offers a starkly different perspective on the archipelago, with craggy, sun-baked lava fields found all within its boundaries. There are plenty of hiking opportunities to be found within the park, with sites like the Nāhuku Lava Tube and Thurston Lava Tube providing a fascinating perspective on the physical composition of the island—and as an added bonus, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is a top spot for birdwatching as well. During a stroll along the 1.9-kilometer Kīpukapuaulu loop trail, explorers can spot native species like the ʻiʻiwi and ʻapapane alongside colorful introduced birds like the common pheasant and warbling white-eye.

Hawaiʻi Island fire department extinguishes public housing blaze
PUNA, Hawaii (KHON2) — Hawaiʻi Island fire officials extinguished a fire at Sacred Hearts Pubic Shelter Housing on the afternoon of May 23. The fire department was first notified of the fire shortly after 3 p.m. Upon arrival, Hawaiʻi Island police had already cleared the scene of bystanders and assisted in evacuations. Wife of Maui doctor withdraws request for restraining order First responders found a single occupant residential wooden-framed structure that was 90% involved in the fire. No other structures were threatened by the fire and the lone occupant of the residence was already out of the blazing structure. The occupant, a woman in her 60s, was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation treatment. Hawaiʻi Island police urging public to drive sober this Memorial Day
HAWAII, Hawaii (KHON2) — Officials at the Hawaiʻi Police Department are reminding the public to drive safely on the roads while honoring our fallen heroes. Traffic fatalities almost doubled on the Big Isle in 2024 compared to 2023, with Hawaiʻi Island authorities saying that impaired driving was a significant factor in the dramatic surge in lost lives. Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaii returns to Ala Moana Beach Park In 2024, HPD arrested more than 960 people for driving under the influence, which was a slight increase compared to the previous year. An additional 277 impaired drivers were involved in traffic collisions, with 71 of these drivers being under 21. DUI checkpoints will be established around the island to ensure safety.
