Former Iowa football QB entrenched in position battle after big quarterback domino falls
With the transfer portal constantly in flux and players now circumventing the portal by becoming a walk-on, quarterbacks are shuffling faster than a three-step dropback. The latest quarterback domino to fall is former BYU QB Jake Retzlaff joining Tulane as a walk-on. By withdrawing from school, he could walk-on at a new program without penalty. This route allows Retzlaff to bypass the transfer portal and join a new program. Retzlaff joins Tulane's QB room, which is also accompanied by former Iowa Hawkeyes and Northwestern Wildcats quarterback Brendan Sullivan. The addition of Retzlaff now entrenches Sullivan in yet another topsy-turvy quarterback room, rather similar to his final year at Iowa, when he took over for Cade McNamara. Jake Retzlaff withdrew from school at BYU just over a week ago amid honor code violations that would have led to a suspension. The suspension was stemming from a civil suit for sexual assault. The lawsuit has since been dismissed. While at BYU, Retzlaff threw for 3,595 passing yards and 23 touchdowns to 15 interceptions. Brendan Sullivan, who spent two years at Northwestern, followed by 2024 at Iowa, has thrown for 1,778 yards, 13 TD, and 8 INT during his collegiate career. He has added 407 rushing yards and 7 rushing TDs. Contact/Follow us @HawkeyesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Iowa news, notes and opinions. Iowa football's Kade Pieper repeats as Solon Beef Days Hay Bale Toss winner
For the fourth year in a row, an Iowa offensive lineman has won the Solon Beef Days Hay Bale Toss. The yearly event takes place in Solon, Iowa, only about 20 minutes north of Iowa City. The Hay Bale Toss has become a friendly competition for the offensive lineman at Iowa to see who can toss a bale of hay the highest. Kade Pieper, a 6-foot 4 290-pound sophomore, won the event last year and returned to Solon to try and defend his crown. And defend it he did. Pieper repeated as the winner of the Solon Beef Days Hay Bale Toss after tossing a bale of hay an astounding 13 feet into the year. If you don't believe me, Iowa football got the video proof and posted it to X on Friday. Pieper is the second Hawkeye this decade to repeat as the winner of this competition. His current teammate Gennings Dunker won the event in both 2022 and 2023. Other previous Hawkeyes to win the competition include Matt Kroul, Drew Ott and Tristan Wirfs. It's a fun way for the team to bond and have a friendly competition before the season kicks off. Pieper and Dunker will be anchors of an Iowa offensive line needing to protect a new quarterback. If the Hay Bale Toss competition is any indication, opposing defensive lines are going to have a lot of trouble trying to move this Hawkeye offensive line. Caitlin Clark joins stacked WNBA All-Star 3-Point Contest field
Things were already shaping up to be an incredible All-Star weekend for Indiana Fever fans. The game and festivities are in Indianapolis, Caitlin Clark was named a captain and three Fever players made the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game roster. Fans got even more excited after today's announcement from the WNBA. The league released the contestants for the 2025 WNBA 3-point Contest at this weekend's All-Star break and it's a star-studded group, including Caitlin Clark. Last season, Clark was invited to do the 3-point contest and declined the offer. Clark will join the competition this season and look to win in front of her home fans. Who else is in the WNBA 3-point Contest? Clark is joined in the competition by Sonia Citron, Allisha Gray, Kelsey Plum and Sabrina Ionescu. This is a stacked group of participants, with Gray winning last years contest and Clark, Plum and Ionescu being well-known for their 3-point shooting prowess. Here's a look at each participant's 3-point shooting percentages this season and in their careers. Caitlin Clark: 28.9% this season, 33.2% in her career Sonia Citron: 36.3% this season, her only season in the WNBA Allisha Gray: 38.9% this season, 35.2% in her career Kelsey Plum: 35% this season, 38.6% in her career Sabrina Ionescu: 30.9% this season, 35.7% in her career Ever since Clark returned from her injury, she's struggled with her 3-point shot as her percentage has dipped under 29% for the season. Clark's home and road splits have been especially concerning when it comes to her shot. Clark is shooting 27-for-69 (39.1%) from three in eight home games this season. Clark is 1-of-28 (3.6%) from three in four road games this season. That's a concerning trend that needs to get better if the Fever want to make a run, but Clark will get to compete at home for this competition, which bodes well for her chances. Clark will have a chance to raise that road 3-point percentage when the Fever wrap up the first half of the season with road games against the Connecticut Sun and New York Liberty. The game against the Sun is scheduled for Tuesday night at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN. The matchup with the Liberty will be Wednesday night with a 6:30 p.m. tipoff on CBS Sports Network. Iowa basketball 'looking for one more' piece ahead of 2025-26 season
Ever since arriving in Iowa City, Ben McCollum has been hard at work rebuilding a roster that saw many of its rotation graduate or transfer. That includes bringing in Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year Bennett Stirtz, sharpshooter Brendan Hausen and big man Alvaro Folgueiras. McCollum also signed a pair of recruits in the 2025 class in Trevin Jirak and Tate Sage. But according to McCollum, the roster is not quite set for the 2025 season. "Yeah definitely looking for one more. I think you'd like to. This time of year it's tricky. You have to find the right pieces. There's international, there's the portal, then obviously re-classes. There's a lot of different things that we'll pursue," McCollum said. It's unclear which direction McCollum and the Hawkeyes might go in the 2025 class if it's a high school piece that could reclassify from the 2026 class. McCollum has already hit the portal a lot, bringing eight transfers in for the 2025 season. There's still some strong options in the portal including four-star prospects Ali Dibba, Jamarii Thomas and Jalen Blackmon. As McCollum mentioned, the international pool of players could be an avenue as well to fill that last roster spot. Regardless of where Iowa gets that final player, Hawkeye fans should have confidence in McCollum to fill that spot with a talented player who fits the style of play that he wants to run. And with the current roster being what it is, the present and future look very bright for Iowa basketball.
