James Gunn's Take On David Corenswet Replacing Henry Cavill In Superman
Last Updated: James Gunn discusses telling Henry Cavill he won't return as Superman, calling it "unfair." Gunn hints at future DCU roles for Cavill. Amid the thunderous response coming in for the latest release, Superman, director James Gunn reflected on the moment when he had to tell Henry Cavill that he was not returning to the film. Gunn took a trip down memory lane to recall the time when a section of the studio tried to 'force" the casting of Cavill in the film which was 'never part of the equation," which, according to him, created an 'unfair" situation for Cavill. During a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, as quoted by Variety, Gunn said, 'The day our [DC] deal closed, all of a sudden, they were announcing that Henry was back. And I'm like, 'What is going on?' We know what the plan is. The plan was to come in and do 'Superman.' So it was really unfair to him and a total bummer." To solve the misunderstanding, James Gunn decided to sit down for a chat with Henry Cavill and disclose the news himself. The director added, 'So, that was really unfortunate. Peter and I [thought] the right thing to do was to sit down with [Cavill] and talk to him. And we sat down and we talked to him. He was an absolute gentleman, a great guy about it. He said, 'The only thing I ask is that I'm able to reveal it myself as opposed to it coming from you guys." Gunn also hinted at bringing back Henry Cavill to the future DCU movies. When asked whether it would be 'too confusing" to recast the actor in the DC Universe, the director responded, 'No, as another character? Absolutely not. I talked to him about it on that day. I would love to put Henry in something." Henry Cavill played the Man of Steel across three DC films from 2013 to 2017. He was replaced by David Corenswet for Gunn's DCU debut feature Superman, which arrived in theatres on July 11. Alongside David Cornswet, Superman also features Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner) and Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl). James Gunn On Replacing Henry Cavill In Superman: "It Was Really Unfair..."
Washington DC: Following the success of 'Superman', director James Gunn opened up on how he convinced Henry Cavill to sit out from the 'Superman' film franchise ahead of casting David Cornswet in the latest DC Studios' superhero project. During a recent appearance on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, as quoted by Variety, the "Superman" director explained that as his deal to take over DC Studios was finalised, it was announced that Cavill would reprise his role as the Man of Steel. However, according to Gunn, it was already decided that he would helm a new 'Superman' film with a new actor, which created an "unfair" situation for Cavill. "The day our [DC] deal closed, all of a sudden, they were announcing that Henry was back. And I'm like, 'What is going on?' We know what the plan is. The plan was to come in and do 'Superman.' So it was really unfair to him and a total bummer," said Gunn as quoted by Variety. Gunn added that the miscommunication was due to a sector of the studio trying to "force" their own vision of DC, which was "never part of the equation." To solve the misunderstanding, the director decided to disclose the truth to Henry Cavill by talking to him. "So, that was really unfortunate. Peter and I [thought] the right thing to do was to sit down with [Cavill] and talk to him. And we sat down and we talked to him. He was an absolute gentleman, a great guy about it. He said, 'The only thing I ask is that I'm able to reveal it myself as opposed to it coming from you guys,'" said James Gunn as quoted by Variety. Gunn also hinted at the possibility of casting Henry Cavill in future DCU movies. While Cavill starred as the Man of Steel across three DC films from 2013 to 2017, David Corenswet took over the role for Gunn's DCU debut feature 'Superman,' which released July 11. Other cast members for that film include Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner) and Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl). The film has garnered positive reviews from critics and viewers alike.

'I admire him greatly': James Gunn on Bradley Coopers Superman cameo
Washington DC [US], July 14 (ANI): Filmmaker James Gunn has all the praise for Bradley Cooper, and that is why he decided to cast him in 'Superman', reported Variety. Cooper plays Jor-El, Superman's father, in the opening sequence of the movie. Marlon Brando, the iconic actor, originally played the part in the 1978 film 'Superman'. Gunn stated that he cast Cooper with Brando's performance in mind, knowing that he could maintain the iconic image of Jor-El. "I needed somebody who could play Jor-El, who had the stature of what we imagine that character to be," said Gunn, adding, "Somebody that could walk in the footsteps of Marlon Brando," reported Variety. Gunn earlier worked with Cooper on the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' trilogy, in which Bradley played Rocket Raccoon. The director shared that the bond he developed with the actor in those films made it easier for him to cast Cooper in the recent movie. "He's a friend," Gunn said, adding, "We've stayed in close contact since the 'Guardians' movies, and I admire him greatly as an actor and as a director." Gunn added that he called Cooper and asked, "Hey, will you do me a favour? Come down, go to England, we're going to shoot you in a 3D environment, make a hologram of you, and you can play Jor-El." David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult lead the cast of Gunn's 'Superman" as the titular 'Man of Steel' and the villainous Lex Luthor, respectively. Other cast members include Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Nathan Fillon (Guy Gardner) and Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl). James Gunn's Superman was released on July 11. The movie had a tremendous start at the box office. Gunn took to Instagram Threads to share the opening numbers of the film at the box office. 'Superman' had the third biggest domestic opening of the year, earning USD 122 million over the weekend. The film currently sits at a global tally of USD 217 million, reported Variety. "I'm incredibly grateful for your enthusiasm and kind words over the past few days," Gunn wrote. "We've had a lot of 'Super' in 'Superman' over the years, and I'm happy to have made a movie that focuses on the 'man' part of the equation, a kind person always looking out for those in need." He added, "That that resonates so powerfully with so many people across the world is in itself a hopeful testament to the kindness and quality of human beings. Thank you," reported Variety. (ANI)

James Gunn Says the New DCU Isn't About One Long Story, It's About Building a Universe — GeekTyrant
James Gunn's Superman might kick off a new era for DC Studios, but don't expect it to operate like a domino in a long, interconnected chain. Despite featuring iconic characters like Green Lantern's Guy Gardner and Hawkgirl, the film isn't weighed down by future setups or endless teases for what's next. GamesRadar+ sat down with Gunn in London ahead of Superman's July 11 release, and the director made it clear that the DCU isn't about forcing every story into one giant puzzle. 'In terms of the DCU in general, I want the movies and the TV shows to be mostly self-contained. I don't want everything to have to lean on each other. I don't think of this so much as one long story where everybody has to take in every little piece. 'I think of this as creating a universe, and then people are able to jump in and tell little pieces of the story from all around that universe.' That's a notable departure from the interconnected model popularized by Marvel Studios. Gunn isn't interested in homework-based viewing where every installment is required reading. Instead, he's building a sandbox where creators can tell their own stories within a shared, but not tethered, world. Still, some projects will connect, just not all. 'There will be some connected stories throughout the time. In fact, Peacemaker season 2 is very connected to Superman. But it doesn't need to be that way, and I want people to be able to enjoy any specific piece of entertainment by itself.' Starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult taking on Lex Luthor, Superman serves as the first major theatrical step into Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. But it's not just a springboard, it's a story with its own voice, rhythm, and destination. So yes, Superman introduces a bigger DC world, but it's not a trailer for future movies. It's a complete experience. And that might be the most refreshing thing about it.
