Oil Ministry Signs Addendum to East Baghdad Oilfield Development Contract with China's EBS
Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Oil Minister, Hayan Abdul Ghani Al-Sawad, on Wednesday sponsored the signing of an addendum to the development contract for the southern section of the East Baghdad oilfield with Chinese firm EBS. In an official statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the minister stated that the amended agreement will contribute to boosting crude production at the East Baghdad field to 100,000 barrels per day, up from the current 45,000 to 50,000 bpd. This increase will be achieved by expanding the contracted development area within the field. The minister added that the agreement includes the adoption of directional and horizontal drilling techniques for six new wells to enhance production capacity. The revised contract also stipulates the construction of four storage tanks—two with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters and two with a capacity of 3,000 cubic meters. Basim Muhammad Khudair, Deputy Minister for Upstream Operations, emphasized that the addendum will introduce new production capabilities and obliges the Chinese company to implement six oil infrastructure projects on behalf of the Midland Oil Company. He further noted that the project will generate a range of employment opportunities by attracting diverse engineering and technical expertise, while also delivering community development projects that provide essential services to local residents near the field. Meanwhile, the Director General of Midland Oil Company, Mohammed Yassin Hassan, stated that the contract entails several operational initiatives, including the establishment of a mobile air purification laboratory to monitor pollution levels, as well as the installation of a wastewater management system to handle drilling waste.
