Derby bank stabbing: Lloyds to reopen week after man's death
A bank in Derby city centre where a customer was stabbed to death is set to reopen on Lloyds branch in St Peter's Street has been closed since 37-year-old Gurvinder Singh Johal died on 6 Cabdiraxmaan Nur, 47, was charged with his murder and is on remand with a provisional trial date of 19 January 2025.A Lloyds spokesperson said the company's thoughts remained with those impacted by the incident and it was continuing to support branch staff. A family friend previously told the BBC that Mr Johal was "a smiler" and "a good friend".He said he had just returned to Derby from a family trip to India with his wife, children and extended MPs Catherine Atkinson and Baggy Shanker, who represent Derby North and Derby South respectively, said in a statement that violence "has no place in our community".

Derby bank murder accused appears in court via video link
A 47-year-old man has appeared in court via a video link from prison charged with the murder of a bank customer in Derby city centre. Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur is charged with murdering Gurvinder Singh Johal, who died after a stabbing inside Lloyds Bank in St Peter's Street on Tuesday. Nur, who was arrested at an address in Western Road, Normanton, Derby, appeared at Derby Crown Court via a video link from prison and was remanded in custody, a court official confirmed. The case was adjourned until August 15. Mr Johal, who was 37, was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency services were alerted at around 2.35pm on Tuesday. A second man, in his 30s, who was arrested in connection with the incident, has been released with no further action, Derbyshire Constabulary said. Mr Johal was said to have been known to friends as Danny. In a tribute given to the Derby Telegraph on Wednesday, councillor Ajit Atwal, leader of the Lib Dem group on Derby City Council, who knew Mr Johal, said: 'He was a good businessman and nothing was ever too much trouble for him. 'He was humble, quiet and a kind guy and would always go above and beyond for everyone. 'His family are devastated and cannot understand what has happened.'

Gurvinder Johal death: Trial date set for man accused of bank murder
A man charged with murder after a stabbing inside a city centre bank will provisionally stand trial in the New Year. Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur, 47, of Western Road, Derby, was charged with the murder of Gurvinder Johal, 37, who was stabbed inside Lloyds in St Peter's Street just after 14:30 BST on via video link at Derby Crown Court from HMP Nottingham, Mr Cabdiraxmaan Nur was told by Judge Shaun Smith KC through a Somali interpreter he will provisionally stand trial on 19 January application for bail was made. Judge Smith KC told Mr Cabdiraxmaan Nur on Friday: "In the meantime, you will be remanded into custody."The judge said the custody time limit would be extended from November until the end of January 2026 in order for reports to be submitted in sufficient time for any trial - which is expected to last "two to three weeks".The defendant was told he will appear at Derby Crown Court again on 15 Police said a second man in his 30s, who was arrested in connection with the incident, was released without any further action on Independent Office for Police Conduct confirmed it had received a referral from the force in relation to the case, but later said: "We have now notified the force that it did not meet the threshold for a referral and was therefore not valid."
