Flamingo chick hatches at Cornish wildlife sanctuary

A Caribbean flamingo egg has hatched at a Cornish wildlife at Paradise Park in Hayle said the chick, which hatched on Tuesday morning, was looking healthy and was under the care of its parents, who hatched another flamingo called Derek in 2019. "It's a cute little chick," said David Woolcock, from the said the chick would soon begin to follow its parents around and then join the other flamingos at the park, including Alan, who at 37 is the park's oldest. Mr Woolcock said: "The flamingos are right in front of the public footpath in the main lawn so it is very easy to see the female sitting and if you are lucky, you might see the chick poking out from underneath her feathers."Despite many people assuming the chicks would be pink in colour, Mr Woolcock said the baby birds were born white with a pink said as they get older, the white turns to a grey colour and, after two to three years, the birds start to get their "lovely and fantastic crimson, pink colour". Mr Woolcock said: "In the wild they feed on shrimp-like creatures and that gives them the colouration, so we have to give them an artificial substitute which gives them that lovely sort of pink colour."If they are not a good colour and in good condition, then they won't breed so it is testament to the diet that they have this little chick now which is amazing."Within six days the chick will begin to make its way down from the nest, which Mr Woolcock described as a "giant volcanic muddy mound". Mr Woolcock said it had been a really good season for breeding at the wildlife sanctuary."I think the hot weather has got the birds triggered up for breeding," he said.

Toy car 'parked illegally' in sewers in Cornwall

A water firm has asked the public to be more careful of what they flush away after a "bizarre collection" of items were found washed down from South West Water (SWW) said they had found various items in the sewers including a toy car in Hayle, a plastic Iron Man model in Penzance and a traffic cone and football in said blockages in pipework caused by inappropriate items caused a variety of problems including Harris, SWW director of waste water operations, said: "We're always working to stay prepared for the unexpected, but when a toy car was parked illegally in a sewer pipe, we knew this wasn't your average day." Mr Harris added: "It's amazing what turns up in our sewers and we really don't know how these mysterious items get there."He said SWW's teams were "constantly battling with culprits like wet wipes, cooking fat and cotton pads"."But sometimes we have a little surprise," added waste water operations manager Jenny said: "Some more recent finds have been a toy car that's blocked the sewer, a football, we've had traffic cones and once upon time we found a toy kids scooter."So yes, we never quite know what we may find when we're doing CCTV and sometimes we can't understand how an item the size that it is has managed to find its way into our sewer."The water firm clears about 8,500 avoidable blockages each year "at a cost of millions", Mr Harris Eamer said: "Sewer pipes can be all sizes, they're not all big sort of London huge ones you can walk down."Be careful about what you're putting down sinks and the toilet. "All we really want are our three Ps, which is pee, paper and poo."

Police crackdown on 'dangerous' A30 U-turns in Cornwall

Devon and Cornwall Police is targeting drivers carrying out U-turn manoeuvres at a collision hotspot in Zero South West and National Highways have installed signs along the Hayle bypass section of the A30, where "dangerous U-turns" have led to multiple crashes and one said the signs would encourage drivers to report U-turns to police as part of its Operation Snap Highways senior road safety engineer, Oliver Dash, said: "Carrying out U-turn manoeuvres on a road such as the Hayle bypass is incredibly dangerous. Although we've installed a U-turn ban, it doesn't appear to be a sufficient deterrent." A U-turn ban and associated signage was implemented in the area in 2021, after a study identified eight collisions in the area since 2014 as a result of collisions resulted in one death, with five people seriously injured and 12 with minor injuries."We're working with Vision Zero South West and Devon and Cornwall Police's Operation Snap initiative to raise awareness of the risks and encourage responsible road users to report any drivers undertaking these manoeuvres," Mr Dash with dashcam footage of drivers carrying out the manoeuvres have been urged to submit it to the police to "make the A30 safer for everyone".
