Father and son charged with murder of four-year-old family member in car crash in Kent
A father and son have appeared in court accused of murdering a four-year-old family member in a car crash in Kent.
Patrick Maughan, 53, and Owen Maughan, 27, both from Darenth, have been charged over the death of Peter Maughan.
The charges relate to a collision involving two pickup trucks on New Barn Road in Dartford just before 9.30pm on Sunday.
Peter died in hospital following the incident.
As well as being charged with murder, the pair are also accused of causing grievous bodily harm to the child's father Lovell Mahon, 24, who is in a critical condition in hospital.
Patrick Maughan and Owen Maughan are also charged with the attempted wounding with intent of Peter's one-year-old sister Annarica Maughan, and the mother of the children, Hayley Maughan.
Annarica had minor injuries in the incident and was also treated in hospital.
Hayley Maughan is the first cousin of Owen Maughan, it is understood.
The two defendants appeared separately in the dock at Sevenoaks Magistrates' Court wearing grey prison jumpers and spoke to confirm their names, dates of birth and address.
They were remanded in custody and will next appear at Maidstone Crown Court, either on Thursday or Friday.
A provisional plea and trial preparation hearing date of 2 July was also set.
