Father and son charged with murder of four-year-old family member in car crash in Kent

A father and son have appeared in court accused of murdering a four-year-old family member in a car crash in Kent.
Patrick Maughan, 53, and Owen Maughan, 27, both from Darenth, have been charged over the death of Peter Maughan.
The charges relate to a collision involving two pickup trucks on New Barn Road in Dartford just before 9.30pm on Sunday.
Peter died in hospital following the incident.
As well as being charged with murder, the pair are also accused of causing grievous bodily harm to the child's father Lovell Mahon, 24, who is in a critical condition in hospital.
Patrick Maughan and Owen Maughan are also charged with the attempted wounding with intent of Peter's one-year-old sister Annarica Maughan, and the mother of the children, Hayley Maughan.
Annarica had minor injuries in the incident and was also treated in hospital.
Hayley Maughan is the first cousin of Owen Maughan, it is understood.
The two defendants appeared separately in the dock at Sevenoaks Magistrates' Court wearing grey prison jumpers and spoke to confirm their names, dates of birth and address.
They were remanded in custody and will next appear at Maidstone Crown Court, either on Thursday or Friday.
A provisional plea and trial preparation hearing date of 2 July was also set.

At around 2.25pm on Sunday 11 May, a white Ford Transit minibus overturned at the exit slip road onto the A329M. No other vehicles were involved in the collision. As was confirmed last month, another child, a six-year-old boy, also died in the collision. Five other children who were injured in the collision have now been discharged from hospital. Thames Valley Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit is investigating the collision. No arrests have been made at this time.

Two women have been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after a crash between two cars which left an 18-year-old critically injured. The teenager was driving a black Citroen C1 when it was in collision with a grey BMW near Halifax just after 20:00 BST on Yorkshire Police said the BMW had been travelling on Hopwood Lane towards Queens Road when it collided with the Citroen, which was coming out of the lane from Gibraltar Road. Three passengers from the Citroen were also taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Police said the BMW left the left the road after the collision and crashed into the front of a women who were in the BMW, both aged 25, were treated in hospital and have been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs. They remain in custody and enquiries into the incident are ongoing, police said. Anyone who witnessed the collision or the circumstances leading up to it, particularly anyone with relevant dashcam footage, is asked to contact the roads policing unit. A teenage passenger has died in a crash and the driver of the car has been airlifted to Audi S4 and Volkswagen Up collided on the A5087 Coast Road at Rampside, Barrow, in Cumbria, at about 13:00 BST on passenger in the Volkswagen, a man in his late teens, was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver, also in his late teens, was airlifted to hospital in Preston, Cumbria Police driver of the Audi, a 20-year-old man from Barrow, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving whilst over the prescribed limit of a specified drug, but has been released pending further investigation.
