A touch of Liverpool in Man Utd's downfall at Bukit Jalil
KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian, who is an avowed Liverpool fan, was given the task of stopping the Reds' arch rivals, Manchester United, at Bukit Jalil on Wednesday. Reserve goalkeeper Haziq Nadzli played in the last 10 minutes and tasked with protecting the Asean X1's 1-0 lead over the Red Devils. This he did, and Haziq found himself part of the Asean side that achieved a famous win over the 20-time English champions in the Maybank Challenge Cup. After the match, when interviewed by the host broadcaster, Haziq said: "I don't idolise any United players, because I'm Liverpool." And he cheekily said he had a hand in Man Utd finishing the season without a trophy, not even the Maybank Challenge Cup, which was supposedly easier to win than any of the trophies in England. "It was a short time together with the team, I managed to adapt quickly. But honestly, as a goalkeeper, it's stressful. If United had scored, I'd be remembered for all the wrong reasons. "So I just focused fully, for that 10 minutes of madness," he said. After his Man Utd experience, Haziq could be called into action against Vietnam in a crucial Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam on June 10 at the very venue where he denied the Red Devils.

5 Malaysians chosen for Manchester United match
KUALA LUMPUR: Five Malaysian footballers will be part of the Asean All-Stars that take on Manchester United in the Maybank Challenge Cup at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on May 28. The five are Azam Azmi Murad, Adib Abdul Ra'op, Haziq Nadzli, Declan Lambert and Sergio Aguero. Terengganu's Azam Azmi, known for his ability to transition defence into attack, said: "Wearing the national colours in this All-Stars side will be a proud moment. I aim to show what Malaysian football can achieve." Penang's Adib said: "This is more than just a match; it's a chance for all of us to demonstrate our skill and heart on an international stage." KL City's Lambert said: "I'm honoured to lead this defence alongside my national teammates. Together, we'll show the spirit of Malaysian football." Perak goalkeeper Haziq Nadzli said: "Standing between the posts against a team like Manchester United is a challenge I've dreamt of." Sri Pahang's hitman Sergio Aguero said: "Joining the Asean All-Stars is a tremendous opportunity. I'm proud to stand alongside my fellow Malaysians and showcase our talent on such a grand stage." The Asean All-Stars will be guided by South Korean Kim Sang Sik, who coached Vietnam to the 2024 AFF Cup title.

Five M'sians to face Man Utd in Asean All-Stars squad
PETALING JAYA: The Asean All-Stars will feature five Malaysians in the Maybank Challenge Cup against Manchester United at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday (May 28). They are goalkeeper Haziq Nadzli, rightback Azam Azmi Murad, leftback Declan Lambert, wingback Adib Abd Raop and attacking midfielder Sergio Aguero. Azam, 24, is delighted to be part of the spectacle and hopes to be a valuable addition to the All-Stars squad led by Vietnam's South Korean coach Kim Sang-sik. "This is a proud moment for me to take on the giants of English football. "I will do whatever it takes to show my best and remind people of the abilities of Malaysian football," said Azam, who played for Terengganu last season on loan from Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT).
