SHAH ALAM, July 18 — A container lorry skidded and overturned on the Kesas Highway here this morning, causing the chemicals it was carrying to spill onto the road. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar said the driver of the Shah Alam-bound lorry sustained minor injuries. He said the department was alerted to the incident at about 10.25 am and arrived at the scene 15 minutes later. [UPDATED] Chemical spill chaos: Trailer overturns on Kesas Expressway

SHAH ALAM: A trailer transporting hazardous chemicals overturned along the Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas) earlier today, spilling its cargo. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the incident occurred at 10.25am. "A fire engine, hazardous materials (Hazmat) unit, and an emergency medical rescue vehicle, along with 14 personnel, were dispatched to the scene," he said when contacted. The trailer was carrying liquid chemical substances, including sulphur, calcium carbonate, and titanium oxide. Mukhlis said that the chemicals were stored in 10 intermediate bulk containers, each with a capacity of 1,000 litres. "The chemicals spilled within the containers and eventually flowed onto the expressway's surface. "One person, the lorry driver, was rescued by members of the public and sustained only minor injuries," he added. Personnel on site are currently awaiting the arrival of a contractor to upright and move the trailer to the roadside, allowing chemical clean-up operations to begin. No other injuries were reported in the incident. Sulphur is primarily used in the production of sulphuric acid, a key ingredient in fertilisers, detergents, and pigments. It also plays an essential role in vulcanising rubber, manufacturing matches and explosives, and is used in the pharmaceutical and paper industries. Sulphur compounds are also employed in pesticides, fungicides, and certain food preservation processes. Titanium oxide is a naturally occurring white compound commonly used as a pigment in paints, plastics, and cosmetics. It is also a key ingredient in sunscreens and is found in products such as toothpaste, food colourants, and some pharmaceuticals. Calcium carbonate is widely used as a dietary calcium supplement and antacid. It is also one of the most abundant compounds found in the Earth's crust and has various industrial applications.

REVEALED: WA's top 10 most viewed property listings

They are the stuff of our Lotto dreams and our investment desires. These are WA's most viewed house adverts. Nearly a quarter of a million people have viewed the top 10 adverts on in the year to April, which showcase beachside mansions, historic beauties as well as some of Perth's cheapest and quirkiest homes. 1. With 31,682 views the home piquing the greatest interest is a stunning $8.85 million luxury home nestled in the exclusive coastal area of Yallingup. Sold through property agent Mack Hall, the 2023-built mansion has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, two kitchen and two loungerooms. But with every room boasting views over the ocean, which can be viewed through 300sqm of floor-to-ceiling windows, it's of little surprise that it has garnered such interest. The biggest property on the list, this 10-bedroom former convent in Toodyay is set on 2210sqm of land overlooking the Avon River. The size alone was likely behind the Queen Anne Federation beauty's 27,724 online views, but those with an interest in a property that comes with its own library and chapel have sadly missed out. It has now sold for only $656,600 through agent John Butler. The second most viewed property on is this twn bedroom property at Mercy Retreat in Toodyay. Credit: supplied 3. In third place was an architectural head turner in Circe Circle, Dalkeith, which got 27,102 online views. The three-level, five-bedroom home includes a home cinema, wine cellar and tasting room, gym, outdoor kitchen, heated pool and spa, two outdoor bathrooms and a lift. And it will only set you back $6.1 million through property agent Jody Fewster. This was the third most viewed property advert, a luxury home on Circe Circle in Dalkeith. Credit: supplied 4. This Kelmscott property, has previously featured in The West Australian after it was described by real estate agent Ash Swarts as the worst-presented home he had listed. The listing joked that would-be buyers should bring a flashlight, a sense of humour and perhaps a Hazmat suit after the previous owner vacated suddenly, leaving his belongings inside. Illustrating the strength of Perth's property market, it will still cost $550,000. This was the fourth most viewed property on - a run down old home on Ryland Rd in Kelmscott. Credit: supplied 5. This stunning Dunsborough property known as Rockville — sold by a local family after five generations of ownership — came fifth with 23,456 views. Western Cape prepares for severe weather and flooding as cold front intensifies

A vehicle navigates through flooded streets as heavy rains lash the Western Cape. Authorities have urged residents to avoid low-lying areas and motorists to exercise extreme caution amid severe weather warnings and icy road conditions. Image: Armand Hough / Independent Newspapers Western Cape residents are being urged to stay vigilant as cold, wet and windy conditions continue to sweep across the province, prompting widespread flooding, hazardous conditions, and a Level 4 weather warning for damaging waves. Anton Bredell, Western Cape MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, confirmed on Thursday that disaster management teams remain fully mobilised as severe weather persists. 'The cold and wet weather is set to continue today, and the public must stay alert and keep safe during the winter weather,' said Minister Bredell. 'High-risk areas continue to be low-lying, flood-prone informal settlements and communities near rivers, streams, and stormwater channels.' The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 4 warning for damaging waves along parts of the coast, with Level 2 warnings in place for disruptive rainfall and strong winds, both inland and along the coastline. The system is currently shifting along the southern coast, with strong gusts forecast in the Overberg and Garden Route areas. Municipalities across the province have reported ongoing flood impacts. The City of Cape Town has experienced localised flooding in both formal and informal settlements, disrupting roads and stormwater infrastructure. In the Cape Winelands District, the Breede River has overflowed, forcing the closure of the Slanghoek and Scherpenheuwel bridges as well as Slanghoek Road at the low-water drift. Worcester's Merwestraat is also under observation, while the Drakenstein area is grappling with rising water levels. An early morning Hazmat incident in Wellington added to the region's emergency concerns when a tanker carrying nitric acid overturned. Fortunately, the container remained sealed and no hazardous material leaked. Video Player is loading. 'The road remains temporarily closed, but access to Groenberg Primary School is being maintained. Motorists are advised to use Hermon Road as an alternative route.' On the West Coast, including Saldanha Bay, emergency response teams have been deployed, and local authorities have activated emergency protocols. Bredell expressed gratitude to the province's disaster relief teams. 'We call on the public to stay alert, stay informed, and stay safe. Your cooperation is vital in helping us protect lives and reduce risk during this period of severe weather," said Bredell. "Emergency services are fully mobilised and remain on 24/7 standby to respond as needed. We extend our sincere thanks to all frontline teams, municipal partners, and volunteers for their swift, tireless efforts in assisting affected communities.' Safety Tips for Residents: Avoid driving or walking through floodwaters. Even shallow water can be dangerous. Stay away from rivers, canals, and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Remain indoors where possible and monitor updates from official channels. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has issued a stern warning to motorists, especially those travelling through the mountainous regions of the Western and Northern Cape, where snow and icy road conditions are expected to create dangerous driving environments. 'Severe weather conditions are expected from Thursday and Friday with rain and showers over the central and western parts of the country,' RTMC cautioned. 'Motorists must take extra caution when driving in snowy conditions.' IOL News
