Las Vegas to build new recuperative care center facility

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — In just a few weeks, the Recuperative Care Center will transition to the Health and Wellness Center on Main Street while construction gets underway for their brand new facility. Arcelia Barajas, the Director of Neighborhood Services for the City of Las Vegas, is pleased to see things moving forward. 'There is a significant need for this program and work here. We have a lot of folks who are homeless and who are discharged from the hospital, and they don't have anywhere to recuperate,' Barajas told 8 News Now. While the location will stay the same, located on Main Street downtown, the current building will be completely demolished this year, with a new two-story facility built by 2027. The new building will have nearly 80 beds available for those. Sharie McClellan is one of those people in need. McClellan is dealing with her own health struggles. She's been at the Recuperative Care Center for 5 months after a doctor referred her from the Courtyard Homeless Resource Center. 'Thank god this doctor happened to walk by me. He noticed I was out of breath, and I told him I was just released from the hospital and had a blood clot on my lung. He got me over to the facility within hours. It was a true blessing,' she said. Those at the forefront in helping these individuals with their acute medical needs, like program manager Miguel Urena, have seen it all. 'We have 24-hour nursing care here. We do IV infusions to wound cares. We see a lot of burns during the summer. People are falling down or don't have the appropriate footwear and because of that get severely hurt,' Urena added. Also, he said providing care for hospice patients is a main component in what they do. 'It's better for them to be here with us than for them to pass away in a park or behind a dumpster somewhere,' he added. The renovation process of the new facility will take up to 18 months to complete. Those at the recuperative Care Center must be referred by a doctor to gain access. Initially, the center was created to help homeless individuals suffering from COVID, but due to the dire need for basic healthcare services, it grew to more of a rehab facility for those who were previously admitted to the hospital.
