NTT Data: Healthcare Organizations Struggle To Create Cohesion Between GenAI Ambitions And Strategies

Research by NTT DATA reveals that healthcare organizations are struggling to create cohesion between their GenAI ambitions and strategies. More than 80% of healthcare organization leaders surveyed said they have a well-defined GenAl strategy, but only 40% agreed their GenAl strategy strongly aligns with their business strategy. Only 54% classified their GenAI capability as high performing. GenAI already is transforming healthcare through enhanced quality of patient and provider experiences as well as better financial outcomes. Yet even greater improvements and return on investment are hindered by challenges in data security, privacy, ethics and regulatory compliance. These findings are among the highlights of NTT DATA's new executive insight report, GenAI: The Care Plan for Powering Positive Health Outcomes. The report is based on responses from 425 decision makers and influencers from healthcare organizations across 33 countries. Key Findings 94% of respondents say GenAI accelerates R&D to enable faster access to new treatments, improved diagnostics, predictive analytics and task automation. 95% believe cloud-based solutions are the most practical and cost-effective option for their GenAI technology needs. 75% acknowledge a lack of necessary skills to work with GenAI effectively, while 93% are addressing GenAI's impact on employee roles and responsibilities. 'To achieve GenAI's full potential in healthcare, organizations must align the technology to their business strategies, develop comprehensive workforce training, and implement multilayered governance strategies that prioritize people and keep humans in the loop,' said Sundar Srinivasan, Head of Healthcare, NTT DATA North America. 'It's vital to transparently show how the technology benefits patients by complementing human workers.' Human-centric GenAI solutions enable clinicians and administrative staff to work more efficiently while maintaining a safe, patient-centered approach to healthcare. For instance, GenAI technology can predict chronic diseases to enable early intervention and can also reduce handling time for prior authorization inquiries. In another example, NTT DATA and Duke Health are using GenAI to create an advanced interactive model for home care to improve outcomes while reducing workloads and stress for clinicians, hospitals and patients. Improved compliance and process adherence are among top outcomes from current GenAI investments, yet a massive 91% of healthcare executives are fearful of privacy violations and potential misuse of Protected Health Information (PHI). Just 42% strongly agree their existing cybersecurity controls effectively protect current GenAI applications. That said, 87% of respondents agree the existing benefits and long-term potential of GenAI outweigh security and legal risks. 59% plan significant GenAI investments over the next two years. Other challenges for rapid and responsible GenAI implementation in healthcare include outdated technology infrastructure and data readiness. 91% say legacy infrastructure greatly affects their ability to use GenAI, while 44% strongly agree they have sufficiently invested in data storage and processing capabilities for GenAI workloads. Only 48% have assessed the GenAI readiness of their data and platforms. 'In addition to clearly supporting operating objectives, AI systems also must be aligned with regulatory and clinical guidelines,' Srinivasan said. 'Success hinges on high data quality and establishing collaborative decision-making teams.'

Little Progress In Tonga Battle To Overcome Cyber Breach

, RNZ Pacific Senior Journalist It has now been three weeks since cyber hackers took down the Tonga Ministry of Health's National Health Information system. Ever since, staff at the country's hospitals have had to rely on whatever handwritten notes are available when seeing patients. A cyber security expert said the cyber breach and subsequent demand for compensation are a "wake-up call for the Pacific". We asked our Tonga correspondent Kalafi Moala for a progress report on the recovery. (The transcript has been edited for brevity and clarity.) Kalafi Moala: When the problem happened, Tonga had to reach out to Australia. They had a group of experts that arrived in Tonga quite quickly, and they are heading up the search to try to, firstly, identify who was responsible for the hacking, and to try to do some restoration to the database that has been lost. So, that has been ongoing work. But the latest announcement from the Ministry of Health is that they have identified the group that have done the hacking - a group that demanded a ransom payment of a million dollars, but they can't identify any individual, since there is a group overseas that have been doing that. Don Wiseman: Are they saying, where overseas this group is? KM: No, they are not. They are unable to say that. They just said a group from outside of Tonga. DW: The government had promised to take action against these people. It's not going to be able to, is it? KM: No, particularly you have a group without a face or without an actual location. I think the big part of the work that they are doing is trying to restore some of the data. And the latest announcement is, yes, they are doing that bit by bit, and that is the latest we have heard. DW: Are people able now to rely on the hospital records, or do they still have to take their own records in when they have a hospital visit? KM: I think that that is one of the big issues that came up, the question was why wasn't there a backup system? I guess they just did not expect that one day the record are going to be hacked. But why wasn't there a backup system, if it failed, and that is what they are doing right now as well; trying to have a backup system that could not be hacked, so that if the system is hacked, at least they can fall back on that. DW: It's been suggested that things have moved very quickly in terms of digital access in places like Tonga, and this is part of the reason that this has happened, that the country wasn't ready for something like this? KM: No, it definitely was not. And things moved quickly, but it moved quickly south, unfortunately. I think that helped Tonga to be able to look at backup systems and other securities, and this Australian group that's here in Tonga is helping them to establish that. DW: Is the government looking at other government departments to ensure that there is a greater degree of security around their data. KM: That is a very good question because just over the last two to three weeks, there have been all kinds of announcements that have come in, for example, from the Registry of Births and Marriages and all of it, they have been saying that now you've got to do that digitally now. That there has been a complete change over to online registrations, and you cannot do that on paper anymore. And so right in the midst of all of that announcements and public declaration was when this thing of health took place, and so people are kind of hesitant. They're asking a lot of questions, Are we, are we moving in the right direction, or, you know? Tonga, of course, being a very small place, you're not talking about millions of people going online to register. We're we're only a population of just a little over 100,000, so there are a lot of questions surrounding that, but I'm sure that what has happened to the Ministry of Health that's putting into alert the other government departments that are going digital.

Newly launched Dhamani platform to ease insurance claims

MUSCAT, APRIL 21 The recently inaugurated Dhamani platform marks a major leap forward in the digital transformation of Oman's healthcare and insurance sectors. Designed as a national digital information exchange, the platform facilitates seamless, real-time communication between healthcare providers and insurance payers. Speaking exclusively to the Observer, Dr Hatim al Lawati, Digital Economy Consultant at the Financial Services Authority (FSA), emphasised that Dhamani is not a standalone system but a comprehensive infrastructure for streamlining claims processing. 'Previously, there was a lot of fluctuation and delay, some claims took up to two years to process,' Dr Al Lawati said. 'Today, with Dhamani, claims can be submitted immediately after treatment, and insurance companies are required to respond within 45 days. The process is faster, more transparent, and significantly reduces administrative hassle.' He also noted that the platform's operational footprint is minimal. 'It is efficient enough to be managed with as few as three workstations,' he added. 'It greatly improves speed and ease for both patients and hospitals.' Through integration with healthcare providers' Health Information Systems (HIS), Dhamani enables instant claim submission by hospitals, polyclinics, clinics, medical centres, and soon, independent pharmacies. Once a patient receives treatment, the system can automatically transmit the claim to Dhamani, which then delivers all relevant data, medical reports, attachments, approvals, diagnoses, costs, and bills, directly to insurance companies. This digital workflow enables payers to act quickly, either approving, rejecting, returning the claim for clarification, or requesting missing information, within a short timeframe. 'Healthcare providers have up to 45 days to submit a claim after the patient receives treatment,' Dr Al Lawati explained. 'If the claim is returned by the insurer, it can be resubmitted within 30 days. Once accepted, the payer is obligated to process payment within another 45 days. This structured timeline ensures swift and smooth claims handling.' Beyond efficiency, Dhamani plays a critical role in combating fraud, waste, and abuse (FWA), common challenges in health insurance systems. 'Fraud involves submitting false claims for treatments that never occurred. Abuse refers to intentionally over-treating patients, for example, prescribing unnecessary medications or requesting unrelated tests. Waste relates to redundant or repeated services, like duplicate lab tests within or across hospitals,' Dr Al Lawati said. To reduce FWA, the platform implements several robust measures. 'First, we are standardising CPT codes, also known as medical protocols, so all providers use consistent procedures for specific illnesses. This allows regulators and insurers to quickly spot irregularities and potential abuse.' 'Second, all transactions on Dhamani are fully digital and transparent, allowing regulators to set automated rules to detect suspicious patterns. For example, if a medicine prescribed only for women is issued to a male patient, the system can flag it immediately.' 'Third, the FSA is deploying business intelligence (BI) and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to analyse data, detect fraud, and manage risk. These technologies empower both payers and the regulator to monitor claims comprehensively and protect system integrity.' In conclusion, Dr Al Lawati affirmed that Dhamani is not only enhancing the speed and transparency of insurance claims but is also serving as a critical infrastructure in safeguarding Oman's healthcare ecosystem from inefficiencies and malpractice.
