Adventurous pup's 7-year wait for right home ends in Ohio. ‘Only took 2,498 days'

A dog has finally found a permanent home after a long wait in Ohio. Meet Nitro, a pup who has waited his entire life to find his happily ever after with a family who won't let him down or abandon him … after seven long years. 'What can we say about Nitro… why is he still here all this time …' a staff member with Healthy Hearts and Paws Project in Youngstown said in an August 2024 Facebook post, when he was 6 years old at the time. 'He is a handsome, athletic looking boy … weighing in at about 90 pounds of pure amazingness. He is neutered and he has been in many play groups through the years.' He was living with a family before, but was brought back almost a year later. 'He did get adopted out for about 11 months where he did live with a 5-year-old child and a cat. He was just super curious of the cat, not aggressive, so they returned him,' the staff member said. Jason Cooke, owner of Healthy Hearts, announced that Nitro finally found the family he was meant to be a part of. 'Only took 2,498 days, but Nitro finally found a home today,' Cooke said in a July 13 Facebook post along with Nitro with his new dog siblings and a video. Why it took so long for someone to welcome him will remain a mystery to the shelter since he has an exciting history. 'He also tried to be a search and rescue dog for Poland Township,' the shelter said in the 2024 post. 'He did very well and passed all testing except he was hesitant/scared of the dark. Which is necessary for that role as they are often in vacant buildings with no lighting.' For information on other animals available for adoption, visit the shelter's website.

Shelter seeking medical foster home for emaciated dog

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) — A local shelter is looking for a medical foster home for an 'extremely emaciated' dog surrendered to the facility. The dog, now named Spud, is slowly regaining its strength at the Healthy Hearts and Paws Project. He was surrendered to the shelter after authorities responded to a home on North Leavitt Road in Warren Friday. Shelter founder Jason Cooke says the dog is estimated to be about 10 years old, is at least 25 pounds underweight, and tested positive for Lyme disease. According to a police report, one of the dog's owners told officers they didn't have the money to take the dog to the vet. 'Hopefully, you know, charges are gonna get filed against the owners and be held accountable for this. Being poor is no excuse for not providing your care, veterinary care. It's certainly no excuse for depriving them of food,' Cooke said. Cooke says all the information about the case was brought to the Warren City Law Department for consideration of charges Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Bowling fundraiser to benefit Healthy Hearts and Paws Project

CHAMPION, Ohio (WKBN) — A local company aimed at making schools and workplaces safer during lockdowns is doing its part to help animals in need. Bolo Stick is hosting a bowling fundraiser this weekend for the Healthy Hearts and Paws Project. The event at Champion Lanes had such a great response, all 94 bowling slots have been filled. But there will still be plenty of raffles including more than 40 basket raffles for people to take part in. It's all to help the shelter and its founder, who's dedicated to helping injured and neglected animals. 'I mean, anybody that's got a heart, you can see what this guy is doing, and he's doing it on a shoestring budget and it's based on donations, so if we can help, we're going to help,' said Bill Barna, Bolo Stick president. 'And we're going to have a good time in the same breath.' The goal is to raise $10,000 for the shelter. Bowling starts at 11 a.m. Saturday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
