Fed-up Edinburgh residents take a stand against 'eyesore' abandoned pub

More info Edinburgh residents who have become 'fed-up' of a city pub that has been 'left to rot' gathered on Thursday. The group branded The Busy Bee pub in Saughton Mains a 'blight on the local community' as they begged for the structure to be replaced. The once popular boozer shut down in 2016, and has featured in the Trainspotting sequel. Since then, residents who live near the structure have claimed the abandoned building 'affects their daily lives with vermin thriving on the site'. The pub was once the original home of the local Hearts FC supporters club before they merged with the Cross Keys, and has gone down in folklore among Jambos who used the place as watering hole before and after games. It's understood to date back to the '50s, after being built as a church by Reverend Stanley Perkins and was called Saughton Mains Congregational Church. Sign up for Edinburgh Live newsletters for more headlines straight to your inbox Pat Carr, Chair of Stenhouse, Saughton Mains and Whitson Community Council said: "The Busy Bee has become a blight on our local community with the state of the building reflecting the lack of basic care shown by the leaseholder and the owner. "It appears for years now that financial gain has been placed above the well-being of local residents. Following our meeting today we have found that the general consensus amongst residents is to replace the existing building with a new structure that better serves the needs of the community.' Independent councillor Ross McKenzie added: "Many of the local residents who came together today are really angry that this site has been left to rot in the middle of their community. "For those who live next to it, this affects their daily lives as vermin thrives on the site. We're asking the landowner and leaseholder to find a solution."

'Just when we get gift of Shankland staying, we lose Penrice'

Hearts head coach Derek McInnes admits the departure of James Penrice is a "blow" but the "right thing" for the player and club after the left-back sealed a move to Greek side AEK former Kilmarnock manager was still revelling in retaining striker Lawrence Shankland an exit accelerated for Penrice, a player McInnes believes resembled a young Andy Robertson when he arrived at Tynecastle."Just when you get your best Christmas present, James Penrice gets sold later that day," he quipped."That was a blow for us because we were really looking forward to working with James. But such was the deal for the club and for the boy, it was the right thing. "I thought it was a brilliant signing for Hearts when they got him. I tried to take him to Kilmarnock. I think he was almost like a young Andy Robertson when he got his move."I thought there were similarities. When I got the job at Hearts, I was kind of regretting saying that and thinking: 'I hope we can just hold on to him'. But we always felt he was a slight risk. "I think he's done brilliantly for Hearts and he's deserving of the opportunity that's been given to him."Despite that blow, McInnes believes there is potential within the squad to take on Penrice's role."We've got Harry Milne and Stephen Kingsley that can play those positions," he explained."Harry Milne's a boy who, probably when he signed, was probably seen for this sort of circumstance when James was moved on. "Such was the high level from James when he signed, he probably caught a few by surprise. I know from speaking to [former head coach Steven Naismith] he was even better than he thought."Who's to say Harry can't go and do something similar? It's important we try and get that from whoever's in the building."Meanwhile, McInnes revealed defender Jamie McCart will not require surgery but faces "six to eight weeks" out with an ankle Hearts boss also said goalkeeper Craig Gordon was only "slowly" recovering from a shoulder the 42-year-old Scotland international, McInnes said: "I think Craig has his eyes on his testimonial game [against his former club Sunderland on July 26] but I think he's probably got a lot to do to be ready for that."

Will Hearts get old Shankland back this season?

Now the ink has dried on Lawrence Shankland's new three-year contract at Hearts, fas might be wondering what version of the striker they are going to it be the lethal striker of a couple of seasons ago? Or the one who toiled last term, scoring sparsely and even falling out of the team at times?Regardless, the Hearts support seems overjoyed at his retention, given the increasingly likely prospect that he would leave and have to be just eight Premiership goals last term - four of which came in May as his deal ran down - it was a shadow of the return the Scotland international delivered in his previous two seasons. Each of those league campaigns yielded 24 goals and exhibited the sort of strike-rate that had Derek McInnes desperate to re-sign he Scotland which version of Shankland are we likely to see this campaign? What went wrong last season? Under previous head coach Neil Critchley, it just wasn't clicking. Shankland was withdraw from the area he threatens in most too often and was played expected goals per league fixture dropped to 0.3 from 0.5 and 0.7 in the previous shots on target fell to 30 after averaging just over 50 in the two previous campaigns, although his minutes on the pitch were fewer. Assists doubled but his overall impact was considerably reduced. "Last season was difficult," Shankland conceded, speaking to the media on Wednesday for the first time since re-signing. "It can be tough mentally at times."That was a whole group thing but, as the captain, you take a bit of responsibility and it can go on your shoulders a bit."We had to draw a line under that. Then it was down to making a decision that was best for me and my future." Why was McInnes so keen to keep him? There was no doubt McInnes was desperate to secure Shankland, but why?Working with him as a youngster at Aberdeen would have helped but also being in the receiving end of his talents would likely have played a part."To get somebody with Lawrence's pedigree that almost guarantees you goals, who is a free agent, is nigh-near impossible," McInnes explained."He brings the experience, the composure, the touch, the leadership qualities, but we're signing him because he knows his way to goal, he knows the league, and I think we've got a better chance of meeting the demands with Lawrence here."We've got others [strikers] who've got so many other attributes, but in terms of natural finishers, we're not blessed with too many. "For that reason alone it was so important we got Lawrence." Century of goals & silverware new target Conversations with McInnes have convinced Shankland that his strengths will be played to and he will be provided chances to re-discover his scoring asked on Wednesday if he'd expect to be pushing towards the 25-30 goal mark next term, the 29-year-old was unequivocal. "I would be, aye," his immediate response. "The two seasons before last, I proved that in that sort of team, I can be successful and I can score a lot of goals. "I do believe that coming here this season has been the right thing for me and I can believe I can re-find that form."With his future sorted, what ambitions does the former Dundee United, Aberdeen and Ayr United striker hold for the next three seasons?Former Hearts head coach Steven Naismith told BBC Scotland that Shankland has elevated himself to legendary status at the club having committed his objectives to cement that seem to be the striker's focus."Scoring 100 goals [for the club] is something that I think is achievable for me," Shankland said. "More importantly, we need to try and get our hands on a trophy. "When I first came to Hearts three years ago, that was something that I had ambitions to do. "It's not easy but if we can go and win a trophy and put your name in amongst those names, it always helps."
