Photo: Instagram SINGAPORE - A recurring left shoulder injury has forced national diving queen Datuk Pandelela Rinong to withdraw from the women's 10-metre (m) platform individual event at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore today. The two-time Olympic medallist said the decision was taken after careful consideration, as the injury would prevent her from competing safely or being at her best. "I'm truly grateful for all the kind messages and concerns for my well-being. I promise to take better care of my body as I focus on healing and prepare for the next opportunity to represent Malaysia,' she posted on Facebook. The 32-year-old added that she would continue to cheer her fellow teammates on in Singapore. "Please join me in sending them our support, luck and prayers as they continue to compete for Malaysia,' she said. On Monday (July 28), Pandelela was competing with Lee Yiat Qing in the 10m platform synchronised event when she had to withdraw after two dives due to the same injury, which she sustained earlier this month. Meanwhile, Yiat Qing failed to advance to the 10m platform semi-finals after finishing outside the top 18 in the preliminaries at the OCBC Aquatic Centre here today. The 17-year-old finished 29th with a total of 240.20 points after five dives. National swimmers Khiew Hoe Yean and Tan Khai Xin also failed to advance in their respective events. Two-time SEA Games gold medallist Hoe Yean clocked 50.77 seconds (s) in the men's 100m freestyle to finish seventh in Heat Eight and 50th out of 110 swimmers, while Khai Xin clocked two minutes 7.07s in the men's 200m medley to end up ninth in Heat Two and 40th overall. - BERNAMA World Aquatics Championships More Like This

Malaysia handed France test in Universiade badminton last-16 showdown

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's hopes of securing a medal in the badminton mixed team event at the World University Games (Universiade) have received a major boost following a favourable draw for the round of 16. The national team, who topped Group D, will face Group C runners-up France at the Westenergie Sporthalle in Berlin, Germany on Sunday. Victory over the French will see Malaysia progress to the quarter-finals, where they will meet either the United States or India. The team, led by former national shuttler Jacky Kok advanced to the last 16 after a commanding 4-1 win over Canada. Malaysia hope to improve on the two bronze medals won at the 2023 Russia Universiade and are hoping to secure at least a silver this time. Meanwhile, national swimmer Khiew Hoe Yean booked his spot in the semi-finals of the men's 200m freestyle in Berlin after clocking 1:48.68s to finish third in Heat Six. He had earlier won silver in the men's 400m freestyle on Thursday. Hoe Yean will be joined by compatriot Arvin Shaun Singh Chahal, who qualified by finishing sixth in Heat Eight with a time of 1:49.66. Both will compete in the semi-finals later on Saturday. In taekwondo, the national men's poomsae trio of Randy Owen Augustine Linggi, Chin Ken Haw and Jason Loo finished sixth in the final, a commendable result in Malaysia's debut appearance in the event. South Korea bagged the gold, with China taking silver and Taiwan settling for bronze.
