Ange Postecoglou Ends Tottenham' Trophy Drought, Inspires Australian Football Despite League Struggles
Ange Postecoglou was lauded back home Thursday for "inspiring the next generation of Australian coaches" after steering Tottenham to their first trophy in 17 years by winning the Europa League. Australian football celebrated the embattled 59-year-old's success after Spurs beat Manchester United 1-0 in the final in Bilbao on Wednesday night. Despite that, Postecoglou's job hangs in the balance after a dismal Premier League campaign that has Tottenham languishing near the bottom of the table. Governing body Football Australia hailed "the three Aussies at the center" of Tottenham's triumph. Postecoglou's assistants include former Socceroos captain Mile Jedinak and Leeds-born naturalized Australian Nick Montgomery. "Congratulations for continuing to break down barriers and inspire the next generation of Australian coaches," Football Australia said in a statement. Boyhood club South Melbourne FC -- known as the "Hellas" -- celebrated Postecoglou as "our legend". "From his early days as a Hellas junior to a championship-winning captain and coach, Ange has gone on to become a serial winner wherever he's been," the club said on social media. "His football journey is truly one of a kind." Greek-Australian newspaper Neos Kosmos said Postecoglou's win was a source of immense community pride, while local politician Steve Dimopoulos said it was a "major achievement". Former Yokohama, Celtic, and Australia coach Postecoglou had consistently said this year that he always wins a trophy in his second season and his words came true in Bilbao. National broadcaster ABC said that Postecoglou had "silenced his Tottenham Hotspur doubters". "To some, it was a meaningless boast," it said on its website. "To others, it was a delusional symptom of the failure virus that has infiltrated everything associated with Tottenham for the past two decades or more. "To Ange Postecoglou, it was belief."

Verona 0-2 Cagliari: Pavoletti practically guarantees safety
Veteran striker Leonardo Pavoletti and a late Alessandro Deiola counter gave Cagliari a potentially decisive victory for their Serie A safety, while Daniele Ghilardi saw red for Verona. This was a huge fixture between two teams eager to make the definitive leap away from the drop zone. Both were coming off defeats, Hellas succumbing 1-0 to Roma with Pawel Dawidowicz, Casper Tengstedt and Abdou Harroui injured. The Sardinians lost Yerry Mina and had Roberto Piccoli suspended, but Alessandro Deiola returned to the squad after one point from three rounds. Advertisement See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog. Cagliari were dangerous on the counter-attack, Razvan Marin sending Zito Luvumbo clear on goal, forcing Lorenzo Montipò to come sprinting out to parry with his legs. Verona lost Tomas Suslov too in the opening half-hour, as he limped off following treatment. (Photo by) Michel Adopo nodded a Tommaso Augello corner over the bar and Cagliari took a deserved lead when Diego Coppola and Daniele Ghilardi failed to intercept the Luvumbo cross, finding veteran Leonardo Pavoletti at the far post. Elia Caprile beat away the Ondrej Duda free kick and Lambourde's volley was off target, but Verona finished the match down to 10 men when Ghilardi was shown a straight red card for his late, high and wild tackle on Gianluca Gaetano. Advertisement Cagliari added a second deep into stoppages with a classic counter-attack, as Gaetano ran from his own half and drew out the goalkeeper, generously rolling across for Deiola's tap-in at the back post.
