British tourist found dead on sun lounger after falling ill in Greece

The 74-year-old man was discovered unconscious on a sun lounger at Stalis Beach on the isle of Crete by other holidaymakers at the resort at around midday on Sunday A British holidaymaker has died on a sun lounger at a popular Greek beach resort. ‌ The 74-year-old was found unconscious on Stalis Beach on the island of Crete by fellow tourists at approximately 12pm on Sunday. Emergency crews raced to the location and fought desperately to save the man's life reports the Mirror. ‌ It's believed he had initially gone for a dip before making his way back to his sun lounger, with witnesses reporting he experienced a "strong feeling" of illness moments before his death. ‌ Medical teams from the Hellenic National Center of Emergency Care (EKAB) attended to the gentleman at the scene, though Greek officials have yet to establish a cause of death. A post-mortem examination is currently underway. The incident follows a string of heartbreaking beach fatalities in recent months involving British holidaymakers. A 73-year-old man was discovered dead on a beach in Agia Paraskevi, Skiathos, in Greece. ‌ A lifeguard raised the alarm, but despite a doctor's 40-minute battle to revive him, the man couldn't be saved. Meanwhile, a 68-year-old lost his life after going swimming and losing consciousness on June 12. Police from the Central Port Authority dashed to Lindos beach in Rhodes and rushed the man to the nearby Archangelos health centre, where he was declared dead. ‌ This came after a British holidaymaker tragically lost his life in a suspected drowning incident whilst battling difficulties in the sea. The tourist had ventured into the water for a late-night swim at Fuengirola, the bustling Spanish resort, when alarmed witnesses spotted him in distress. Authorities confirmed bystanders dragged him from the waves after alerting the emergency services. Despite their swift response, paramedics were unable to save the man's life upon reaching the shoreline, and he was declared dead at the scene. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! A spokesperson for the regional emergency coordination centre stated: "A man died yesterday evening at a beach in Fuengirola. Emergency responders received the first of several calls around 9.10pm, saying a man was drowning in the sea off Fuengirola's seafront. "According to the callers he was about 60 metres out and was having difficulties getting out of the water. National and local police were mobilised along with coastguards and paramedics. "Two members of the public were able to get the man out of the water but despite the efforts of the emergency responders to save his life, there was nothing they could do to revive him. He was pronounced dead on the beach before he could be taken to hospital."
