Royal wedding puts King Charles to the test

COMMENT So one minute you're capital 'N' normie – a paediatric nurse working in the UK's decaying National Health Service and a single mother – and then several short months later you are in the Royal enclosure at Ascot yuking it up with King Charles and praying your fascinator stays put. Such is the story of Harriet Sperling who this week added 'royal bride' to her CV with the announcement of her engagement to Princess Anne's son Peter Phillips. However, this lovely jubbly news was not revealed via thick white paper borne aloft by a Buckingham Palace footman but was exclusively splashed all over Hello!, with Peter and Harriet duo posing for exclusive photos for the magazine like a couple of bonafide Love Islanders with a fresh sideline in waist trainers. And therein lies the rub. Just as the royal family's wedding apparatus rustily cranks into gear and a courtier Googles who has the royal warrant for bonbonerie, King Charles could be about to be sorely tested. His Majesty has six nieces and nephews who live civilian lives and have civilian bills to pay – and for whom their most bankable asset is their royal status. The exclusive right to a Windsor wedding could be worth millions, even if the groom is only 19th in line to the throne and is so far down the line of succession he needs a decent pair of field glasses to see to the front of the queue. How does the King handle this given his own son and daughter-in-law have been selling their own (much better) story for more than five years now? This very issue overshadowed Peter's first wedding to Autumn Phillips in 2008 when the couple sold exclusive access to the family celebration to Hello for £500,000 ($AUD1 million), all unbeknownst to the late Queen. On the day Her late Majesty, Prince Philip and now King Charles all turned up to what was supposedly a private affair only to later find out that four snappers from the mag and a journalist had been on hand to capture the Windsors off-duty and in the vicinity of an open bar. The end result: A glossy 59-page spread including 10 photos of the late Queen alone. However the real 'get' for Hello was the first photos of royal girlfriends Kate Middleton and Chelsy Davy bonding with their potential in-laws. One was decidedly not impressed. 'Aides let it be known that [the Queen] was deeply unhappy with the decision, while senior members of the Royal Family spoke about feeling 'betrayal',' the Daily Mail 's royal editor Rebecca English later reported. So in 2008, after Peter and Autumn's Hello fiasco, Her late Majesty imposed a ban on family members monetising events such as weddings and christenings. Except, that was under the old regime. And that was long before the King's own son took himself off to California to tell his story and to reveal family details far, far more intimate than a shot of Charles eating a vol-au-vent or something. Can or will the King maintain the late Queen's photo deal ban given what Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's have been doing with themselves for the last five years? Compared to Netflix and Oprah, a cheery spread of photos of, say, Peter and Harriet on a matrimonial high on their wedding day seems a nearly quaint idea. (If not downright attractive. Anything that pushes the idea of a functioning, affectionate and united royal family couldn't hurt.) However, nor can he risk it looking like he is letting his siblings' children make bank off their royal family status even if they do have to financially fend for themselves. Complicating things further is the fact that Charles risks looking deeply hypocritical if suddenly came over all stern about his nieces and nephews undertaking paid media outings, – but nor can he let them unabashedly go forth and commercially exploit the accident of their birth. For Peter and sister and brother-in-law Zara and Mike Tindall and cousins Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, Lady Louise Windsor and James, The Earl of Wessex, they now find themselves between a rock and tax bill: None of them do royal duties and therefore none receive any palace funding while their adjacency to the throne and royal lustre must be worth a bomb on the open market. In January 2020, the same month that the Sussexes were relocating their matching yoga mats to North America Peter controversially starred in a TV ad for a Chinese state-owned dairy, posing in front of a grand home (actually the Marquess of Bath's historic Longleat) with a replica of a royal carriage and while totally-normally clutching a large glass of milk. 'As children, we used to spend a lot of time down at the dairy. There was a herd of Jersey cattle at Windsor and we were brought up on it,' he said in the ad. 'This is what I drink'. The tagline billed him as 'British royal family member, Peter Phillips.' After facing accusations of cashing in, an insider told the Telegraph: 'He was asked to do it and he didn't really see it as being a major issue. People have done far worse … He regularly gets offers for reality shows but he doesn't see himself as a famous person.' (Well don't tell the Chinese dairy industry that.) While their cousin Prince William might be raking in more than $40 million-a-year thanks to the handiwork of a mediaeval King who set up the Duchy of Cornwall trust, Peter and Zara have to earn their own coin and both have inked deals over the years. In 2001 Zara and then boyfriend the jockey Richard Johnson sold an 'at-home' story to Hello for a £125,000 fee ($AUD256,000) and she and now husband Mike Tindall sold the photos of their first child, daughter Mia, to Hello for a reported £100,000 ($205,000). (In 2011, Zara and Mike ruled out selling their wedding photos for what would have been a reported $2 million.) In 2023, Mike Tindall starred in I'm A Celebrity, earning an estimated £150,000 ($307,000). So how will King Charles navigate things around Peter and Harriet's wedding? And who is going to foot the bill for the doves? One expense no one will have to worry about – the groom's mother buying a new frock. No one has ever done more for the mustard serge industry than Princess Anne.

Katherine Ryan's daughter not happy about new sibling

Katherine Ryan's teenage daughter is "not very excited" about her mother's pregnancy. The Duchess star - who has Violet, 16, and Fred, four, and two-year-old Fenna with partner Bobby Kootstra is due to give birth to her fourth child later this year but admitted her eldest child doesn't think she should be "having any more kids". Katherine told Britain's Hello! magazine: "Violet is not very excited. She said: 'This is enough kids; what are you doing?' She has had mixed emotions through all my pregnancies. "She was happy about the first one and then with Fenna, she was annoyed at worst, indifferent at best. "But now we've come to an understanding. She understands she will love the baby but she doesn't think we should be having any more kids." Although the 42-year-old comic's pregnancy was a "bit of a surprise", Katherine and Bobby weren't particularly shocked. She said: "We don't use contraception, because we're old and we're financially solvent, and we like having kids. That's been the case for the past six years we've been together." Katherine joked she has a "fat girl summer" ahead of her amid her changing figure. She said: "I am well into my second trimester now, so it will be a fat girl summer for me. The entire hot summer, I will be large and in charge. "It's going to get ugly, but that's fine." Fenna was born at the family's north London home and while Katherine is hoping to have her next baby there too, she admitted Bobby isn't as keen. She said: "Fenna took the longest, but that was my favourite one. Bobby feels he has a bit of PTSD from that, because she was 'sunny side up' and got a bit stuck, but she was never in distress and was born fine." Katherine recently admitted she will be disappointed if she has another son. She told Heart Breakfast: 'I have to say that I can't ever complain post-first trimester. 'I'm quite big, so I think it might be a boy, so I'm feeling dejected about that, because men have just antagonised me all my life, even before they're born. 'I will have it [gender disappointment] this time if it's a boy."

Lady Eliza Spencer, niece and look-alike of the late Princess Diana, is officially engaged to her long-time South African partner, Channing Millerd. Their dreamy proposal during a getaway in Santorini has taken the internet by storm. The aristocrat, 33, announced the exciting news with a series of loved-up images from the special moment — which took place during the couple's recent getaway to Santorini, Greece. 'Forever and Ever," Spencer captioned the sweet Instagram post. In the images, Eliza can be seen flashing her diamond sparkler with the stunning views of the Aegean Sea in the background. One of the pictures also shows the romantic set-up, which includes a candle-lit dinner surrounded by flowers overlooking the caldera. However, amid the joyous moments and blessings for the couple, Eliza's father and brother of the late Princess Diana — Earl Charles Spencer — is missing. As per a report by New York Times, he has not publicly congratulated his daughter on the news. In an interaction with Hello Magazine in March, Eliza shared her plans for the wedding. 'We love the idea of a destination wedding," she said in March. 'We feel drawn to Italy, especially somewhere by the ocean — that feels so romantic to us. Spain has that same coastal charm we adore." 'At the same time, Amelia and Greg's wedding in Cape Town was unforgettable, and South Africa will always be home," she added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Peter Phillips is engaged to NHS nurse

The Princess Royal's son Peter Phillips has announced his engagement to NHS paediatric nurse Harriet Sperling. The couple, who have been together for one year, told the King and Queen before two photos were published by Hello! magazine. They are pictured smiling in a field, with Ms Sperling opting for an all-white ensemble with her new diamond engagement ring while Mr Phillips sported a plaid shirt for the occasion. It comes after Princess Diana's niece Lady Eliza Spencer announced her engagement to long-term partner Channing Millerd on Thursday. The announcement of Mr Phillips's engagement comes 17 years after he caused controversy by allowing Hello! magazine to exclusively photograph his wedding to Autumn Kelly in 2008. The unprecedented access to Windsor's St George's Chapel, as well as to senior members of the Royal family including the late Queen and Prince Philip, was regarded as a serious error of judgment by Buckingham Palace at the time. In return for the photographic rights, Mr Phillips and Ms Kelly were reported to have received a £500,000 sum. The move resulted in Queen Elizabeth, who was not consulted in advance, to halt celebrity magazine photography deals involving senior members of the Royal family. The pictures marking Mr Phillips and Ms Sperling's engagement were taken privately and provided by their official spokesman. It is understood that no commercial arrangement was made with Hello!, or any other publication. Mr Phillips, who has no title, has always been regarded as a private member of the family because he carries out no official royal engagements and is not in receipt of public money. The eldest grandchild of the late Queen and the eldest child of Princess Anne, Mr Phillips made his public debut with Ms Sperling at the Badminton Horse Trials in May 2024. They were pictured at the event hand-in-hand while supporting his sister, Zara Tindall. The couple reportedly first met at a sporting event. A statement was issued for the pair by spokesman Gerard Franklin on Friday, reading: 'Mr Peter Phillips, the son of HRH The Princess Royal and Captain Mark Phillips and Ms Harriet Sperling, daughter of the late Mr Rupert Sanders and Mrs Mary Sanders of Gloucestershire, have today confirmed their official engagement. 'Both families were informed jointly of the announcement and were delighted with the wonderful news of their engagement. 'Their Majesties the King and Queen [and] the Prince and Princess of Wales have been informed of the announcement. No date has been officially set for the wedding.' In June, Ms Sperling made her official royal debut in the carriage procession at Royal Ascot and was seen meeting her husband-to-be's uncle, King Charles. Mr Phillips and Ms Kelly share two daughters, Savannah and Isla. They confirmed their separation in February 2020 and officially divorced in June the following year. Ms Sperling, meanwhile, has one daughter named Georgia. She has previously spoken about her experience being a single mother. Meanwhile Lady Eliza, the daughter of Diana's brother Earl Spencer and former model Victoria Aitken, revealed the news of her engagement on Instagram with pictures on holiday in the southern Greek island of Santorini. The couple, who have been together for nine years, were pictured smiling at a candlelit dinner set up for the occasion. Lady Eliza, who works as a model and brand ambassador, wore a long red dress while Mr Millerd, a tech executive, is pictured sporting all white while down on one knee. Lady Amelia Spencer, the model's twin sister, led the congratulatory messages to the pair, saying: 'The best news in the world! The most perfect couple and dream engagement. My heart is bursting for you both.' Their eldest sister Lady Kitty Spencer added: 'So happy for you and love you both very much.' The couple first met at a dinner party in South Africa hosted by Greg Mallett, Lady Eliza's brother-in-law, who was friends with Mr Millerd through school. Lady Eliza, 33, has previously told Hello! magazine that she shares 'such a strong, loving and supportive relationship' with Mr Millerd, describing him as her 'best friend'. 'We understand each other so well,' she added, saying: 'No matter what life brings, we're always there for one another. 'I absolutely believe he's The One – our bond is built on so much trust, laughter and shared values.' She captioned her engagement post with 'forever and ever', and included a photo featuring her new pear-shaped ring. The announcement comes after her twin sister's wedding to fitness expert Mr Mallett in Cape Town in 2023. The sisters spent most of their childhood in South Africa as part of Earl Spencer's efforts to keep them out of the spotlight following Princess Diana's death in 1997. Lady Kitty The couple married in a glamorous three-day event at the Villa Aldobrandini in Frascati, south-east of Rome. Lady Eliza has previously said that she and Mr Millerd 'love' the idea of a destination wedding, similar to her elder sister. 'We feel drawn to Italy,' she said, adding: 'Especially somewhere by the ocean – that feels so romantic to us.'
