Dharwad varsity gets patent for diabetic-friendly ready-to-eat upma

Dharwad: The University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad (UAS-D) invented a ready-to-eat upma using buckwheat, for diabetic patients. University scientists researched for over seven years to develop this South-Indian breakfast dish. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This research attracted the attention of foreign universities, and encouraged farmers to grow buckwheat which can be cultivated in just 60 days. Dr KL Patil, vice-chancellor, UAS-D, told TOI that a patent was issued for 'Buckwheat Upma Mix, and process for preparation thereof, by the patent office of the Union govt. "This is an effort to tackle contemporary health issues. The team of scientists including Hemalatha S, SA Desai, Suma Biradar, UK Hulihalli, VS Kubasad, CP Mallapur, BD Biradar, and Sindhu, have been researching for the past seven years. This ready-to-eat upma, can be used for two months after manufacturing, and will soon be available in the market," he added. He further said, "This research will encourage farmers to grow buckwheat, which has medicinal values. It is commonly grown in hilly regions with less water. Currently, very few farmers grow it in North Karnataka." Dr Uma Kulkarni, professor and HoD, food and ntrition section, Community Science College, said that buckwheat is gluten-free, helps improve digestive health, is good for intestine-related ailments and diabetes. "It can also be used to prepare chapati, puri, chakkuli, dosa, nippattu, and other items," she added.
