After Heartbreaking Loss vs MI, DC Coach Hemang Badani Says, "If You Go Back..."

The failure to find a settled opening pair throughout the season is one of the reasons why Delhi Capitals have not progressed into the IPL knockout stage despite an impressive start, says head coach Hemang Badani. Delhi Capitals crashed out of the race to reach the IPL playoffs with a 59-run loss to Mumbai Indians on Wednesday, which was also their fifth defeat in last seven matches with one victory and a washed out contest. Delhi Capitals tried out as many as seven partners with no considerable success in 13 matches, and will now take on Punjab Kings in their last game on Saturday. "A settled opening pair is only possible when your opening pair gives you a start. If you don't get starts, you are bound to make changes to try and fill that gap, fill that void," Badani told the media here. "If you go back and see the other sides which have had great starts and great powerplays with the bat, we haven't had those starts and hence we've had to make those changes." "We had Jake (Fraser-McGurk) at the top earlier, it didn't work for us. Abishek (Porel), then we had Faf (du Plessis), then we also had Karun (Nair) to come in. It's just that we haven't had anyone really making sure, ensuring that we get off to good starts,' he added. Badani continued, 'Our opening at the top was a worry for us and I think one of the reasons why we haven't gone forward.' KL Rahul's performance has perhaps been the only bright spot in the DC lineup with the India wicketkeeper-batter scoring 504 runs and 13 matches so far. Badani said Rahul is not taking any additional pressure after he right-hander was dismissed for 11 having moved to the opening slot. 'They are all seasoned campaigners. They've been playing IPL from season one. So I don't necessarily think that he is taking any extra added pressure. He understands that we are at a position where we have to win this,' he said. 'It's just one of those days where, again, our opening didn't really give us those starts,' he added. The former India player also rued Delhi Capitals not being able to finish a few matches which they could have in the past, recalling the loss to Mumbai Indians in New Delhi which marked the revival of the five-time winners in the league. 'We had a great sprint to start with. We had a massive start to start with. If I'm not mistaken, (we had) five wins in (first) six games. That's a great place to be,' he said. 'Since then we've just struggled and we've not found that win. To some extent we've also had games where I genuinely felt that we could have won and we just didn't finish those games.' 'For instance even (against) Mumbai at Delhi, the game (in which) Karun Nair got 90 odd, we were cantering along and we lost the game from there. Even the game against KKR, we had to get 60 in six (overs) with seven wickets in hand, (and we had) two set batters." Badani added, 'We missed out there. You want to ideally finish those games. If you want to win this competition, if you want to go to the playoffs, you want to ideally finish those games and if you don't finish those games, then you have no one else to blame but yourself.'

DC head coach on uncertainty around Delhi vs Punjab game: Have full faith in BCCI

Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Hemang Badani has shown his faith in the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and IPL governing council amid growing uncertainty around their next game against Punjab Kings (PBKS). Delhi is set to take on Punjab in Match 58 of Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) on Thursday, May 8 at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala. However, the match is expected to be shifted out of the venue due to security concerns amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan. Recently, DC head coach Hemang Badani was asked about the uncertainty around the fixture, and he said that they're used to challenges being part of the cricketing environment for so long. 'I think as cricketers and as people part of cricket environment, we're used to challenges, we're used to navigating and adapting as we go by. Even in a situation like this, which is obviously very new to a cricket environment, we will still have to navigate. We have utmost faith in the BCCI and the IPL governing council to guide us through and give us the right directives. And as a side, we just adapt and move on,' said Badani in the pre-match press conference. Furthermore, he also praised the Indian army for the success of the 'Operation Sindoor' and prayed for their safety. "Obviously me being a citizen of the country, my support will be with the Indian Army. Whatever they are doing for us is something that I value and appreciate, and just hope that they are safe and sound,' he added. Meanwhile, Delhi are in a must-win situation, having lost two out of their last three matches while one match got washed out. They're currently fifth on the points table with 13 points and will need to win all of their matches to progress ahead on their own. Another loss will leave their fate in the hands of the other teams, hence the upcoming fixture is extremely crucial for Delhi. On the other hand, Punjab will also be eager to win the upcoming game to have a chance to finish in the top two. Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today! With Airport Shut, MI vs PBKS IPL Clash In Dharamshala Faces Possibility Of Venue Change

The IPL match between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings to be held on Sunday in Dharamshala is set to be shifted to Mumbai after travel plans of the teams were thrown haywire following the temporary closure of the hill town's airport. Dharamsala's airport has been closed for operations indefinitely as a precautionary measure after India's missile strikes on Pakistan to dismantle terror infrastructure in the wake of the Pahalgam terrorist attack. "There is high possibility that the match will be shifted to Mumbai in case the airport remains shut," a BCCI source told PTI. Dharamsala is due to host the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals clash on Thursday and that game will go ahead as scheduled given that both teams have touched base. "We have not got any written intimation from either the BCCI, or the central and state governments about cancellation of tomorrow's match. Unless there is any official instruction, we are going ahead with the schedule," a Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association source told PTI. The picturesque city is the second home base of Punjab Kings. "We have not been told about the venue change yet. We are waiting to hear from the BCCI," a Punjab Kings official said. Delhi has very little time to figure out its logistics as the players have to be back in the national capital for their next game, against Gujarat Titans, which is also on Sunday. They could head back by road after the match. "Everything is fluid at the moment. Discussions are on with franchises and they are also internally discussing about what are the options of travelling from Dharamsala to Delhi in case the airport remains shut," a BCCI source told PTI. "One option (for Delhi Capitals) remains bus journey but then it is not just about teams but also the broadcast crew and equipment. It's an evolving situation," he added. India carried out precision strikes on nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were murdered. At least 18 airports in the northern and western parts of the country have been temporarily shut owing to the military escalation. These include Srinagar, Leh, Jammu, Amritsar, Pathankot, Chandigarh, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Shimla, Dharamshala and Jamnagar. Chandigarh, which is the nearest alternate airport for Dharamsala, is among those shut down for operations right now. At the pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow's clash, Punjab Kings spin bowling coach Sunil Joshi said, "We are following BCCI's protocols. And whatever the BCCI recommends to us, the team management will act upon it." Delhi Capitals coach Hemang Badani said his team will adapt to the challenge. "As cricketers and as people part of cricket environment, we're used to challenges, we're used to navigating and adapting as we go by. "We have utmost faith in the BCCI and the IPL governing council to guide us through and give us the right directives. And as a side, we just adapt and move on," he said.
