ALBAWABA - The murder of Rahma Ayat, a 26-year-old Algerian woman studying nursing in Hanover, Germany, last Friday, has sparked outrage among Arabs and Algerians in the country over Islamophobia and racism.
According to the New Arab, Ayat was stabbed to death by her 31-year-old neighbor in a residential building in the Hemmingen district. Several insider sources revealed that Ayat contacted her family in Algeria to complain about her neighbor, who was harassing her and mocking her headscarf.
Despite repeatedly complaining to the German police about her neighbor and racism, the complaints were "not taken seriously."
Rahma Ayat's death reignited an ongoing issue regarding the rise of racism in Germany due to the increase of far-right ideologies in the country.

Additionally, Arab human rights activists accused German authorities of double standards while dealing with events involving non-German individuals, in contrast to their treatment of Germans who are racist towards their beliefs and appearance.
A New Arab journalist said that "the rush of the right and the far right to downplay its severity and motives [Ayat's murder] to rule out the possibility that it was a racist hate crime."
He added that German media made it seem that there was a quarrel between the two individuals before Ayat was murdered.
Just a week before Rahma Ayat's murder, the German police chased down an Algerian man, shot him in the back, and killed him.
Germany witnessed many similar cases in the past, with racist Germans verbally and physically assaulting Muslim women with headscarves on.
Moreover, in 2009, an Egyptian woman named Marwa El-Sherbini was stabbed to death by a German right-wing extremist alongside her unborn baby, sparking widespread anger from human rights activists and Egyptians.
