Passenger ejected from vehicle during crash in Smith County Gun Barrel City PD said officers were doing a traffic stop in the 100 block of Trailwind Street in Gun Barrel City on Saturday at around 9:36 p.m. when a man ran from the vehicle. According to a post from Gun Barrel City PD, the man was identified as Terrence Marshawn Carter, a Black man from Henderson. Officials said Carter has a active patrol violation from the Texas Pardon and Parole Board. Gun Barrel City PD and other agencies searched the area and K9 Aygo was able to track Carter into a creek near the 1000 block of East Main Street, Gun Barrel City PD said. Payne Spring residents left with property damage after severe weather
PAYNE SPRINGS, Texas (KETK)– East Texas was hit by several severe storms on Memorial Day, as residents in Henderson County were met with a scary situation before sunrise. PHOTOS: Memorial Day severe weather leaves damage across East Texas 'The tree limb had gone into my closet, narrowly missing where I sleep in the bedroom,' homeowner Susan Waterman said. The tree came crashing onto Waterman's roof, causing major damage and thankfully no residents inside the home were injured. 'I feel very thankful today, despite the damage,' Waterman said. Harsh winds and intense rain from this morning's storms snapped trees and caused power lines to come down all around the Payne Springs area of Henderson County. After the peak of the storms, more than 13,000 customers throughout East Texas were left without power. 'I didn't have electricity this morning,' homeowner Stan Williams said. Fallen trees littered the road, and several knocked-out power lines were laying around Williams' neighborhood of Enchanted Oaks. 'I saw quite a number of trees that are down over the road, and power lines down all over Enchanted Oaks,' Williams said. Cleanup progress has already taken place, despite threats of incoming storms. 'I know our neighborhood took quite a hit,' Waterman said. 'Everyone has been super helpful and kind, and I'm going to get some tarps out and we'll just clean it up.' No residents were reported injured during Monday's severe weather. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

1 dies in U.S. 60 West single-car accident
The Daviess County Sheriff's Department is investigating a single-car accident that claimed the life of one person. According to the DCSD, the wreck was reported around 5 a.m. Saturday in the 10400 Block of US Highway 60 West, near the Henderson County line. The report said emergency crews found a single vehicle approximately 30 feet off the roadway and a broken utility pole. The sole occupant, who has not been identified, of the vehicle was found deceased inside the car. According to the report, the preliminary investigation by the DCSO Accident Reconstruction Unit shows that the vehicle was westbound on U.S. 60 West, and left the roadway for unknown reasons, hitting the utility pole before rolling and eventually coming to rest in a field partially submerged in water from the storms that hit the area the previous evening. The report said the crash most likely occurred during the night and the scene was not discovered until early morning when a passing motorist almost struck wires that were over the roadway and got out of his vehicle to investigate and noticed the car in the field. The crash is being investigated by the DCSO Accident Reconstruction Unit, and the death is being investigated by the Daviess County Coroner's Office. The highway was closed in both directions while emergency crews including the Daviess County Fire Department and Stanley Fire Department worked the scene and Kenergy replaced the utility pole.

More help available for residents dealing with flood damage
REED, Ky. (WEHT) — A family in Henderson County says they were originally denied assistance after massive flooding last month. Several weeks later, some organizations are stepping in to help them. 'Even though the water is gone… We are still drowning out here,' Kassi Minton. Kassi Minton lives in Reed, Kentucky, and says her family home is a shell of what it used to be. She says 19 inches of water came into their home during flooding last month. 'We used Styrofoam tile in most of the house, and so that immediately started molding. We also had the old paneling walls, which immediately started molding and buckling. We lost all of our cabinets in the kitchen. As the walls started to buckle, the top cabinets fell. As water started receding, my bottom cabinets started deteriorating,' Minton says. Minton says they lost everything. She says almost all of the stuff they own fits inside a shed. After initially being denied assistance, Minton reached out to the Henderson County Emergency Management Agency. 'It feels like a six-thousand-pound cinder block is finally coming off my chest. Because we did not know or even how to get help,' Minton says. Minton says United Way helped ease the financial burden by helping them find an Airbnb. 911 Gives Hope also helped raise money for flooding victims, like Minton and her family. 'We wanted to go ahead and give you these three gift cards so that you guys will have that and can get some goods that you might need,' says Jill Ward, the Henderson EMA Assistant Director. Several organizations are also coming across state lines to help. United Methodist Committee on Relief, or UMCOR for short, arrived to help Minton this week. 'You can pray for a hole if you want to, but God wants you to pick up a shovel, so that is what we are going to do. We have some teams from as far away as Montana coming in to help clean up,' says Reverend Jeff Graham with UMCOR and Pennyrile District Disaster Response. 'Help is coming, it may just take time. Continue to pray and reach out to your local resources,' Minton says. Henderson EMA says there are several resources available to help with cleanup. Christian Aid Ministries is coming to the area on Friday to help haul away debris. 'There is a lot of construction debris and different types of things that need to be picked up and put into trash bins and dumpsters and things like that, so they are going to be doing that tomorrow and get that out of here… then they are going to the next house. And we have quite a few houses that need to be done,' says Henderson EMA Director Kenny Garrett. Henderson EMA also hopes to open a disaster recovery center sometime next week. 'Once we get that opened up, we should be able to help you out a little bit more with the different types of agencies that will be there to help,' Garrett says. Garrett says there is a Kentucky Emergency Management hotline residents can call to get help with housing and financial assistance. The number is (502)-607-6665. Garrett also says Crisis Cleanup is another tool residents can use. It's a collaborative platform that helps volunteers, like Christian Aid Ministries, find and connect with residents who need assistance.
