Tickets set to go on sale for the pre-Broadway run of 'Purple Rain' in Minneapolis

It's time to call up a friend and let them know you only wanted to see them underneath the Purple Rain marquee. Hennepin Arts has unveiled when tickets will go on sale for the pre-Broadway premiere of Purple Rain. Originally set for an April premiere, the musical was delayed to this fall. However, it does not appear that another delay is in the offing, as tickets for the pre-Broadway run will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 9. A musical has been adapted from the film that catapulted Prince to new heights of fame. Before it heads to Broadway, it'll have a five-week engagement at the State Theatre in downtown Minneapolis beginning on Oct. 16 and running through Nov. 16. The Minnesota-set musical has a book by Tony Award winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and direction by Tony nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz. Jason Michael Webb is the music supervisor. He also arranged the music and orchestrations. Webb is assisted by former Prince collaborators Morris Hayes and Bobby Z, who are the production's music advisors. The official opening night performance will take place on Nov. 5. Tickets will be available through the Hennepin Arts website.

Hennepin Arts announced Monday the production is set to run from Oct. 16 to Nov. 16 at the State Theatre, with tickets going on sale on May 9 at 10 a.m. Although it kicks off in mid-October, the official opening night is set for Nov. 5. The production was originally slated to debut in April, but Hennepin Arts said in October "more time for creative development" was needed. The musical is based on the story by Prince and the film's original screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn, with music and lyrics by Prince. The book is written by Tony Award winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, and it's directed by Tony Award-nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz. Prince and Apollonia Kotero in a scene from the film "Purple Rain" (1984). Warner Bros./Getty Images Hennepin Arts says two of Prince's closest musical collaborators — Bobby Z of The Revolution and Morris Hayes of New Power Generation — are serving as the production's music advisers. "This is a really good thing and it's something that he would really love," Bobby Z told WCCO's Reg Chapman last year. The film version made $100 million worldwide and was set and shot across the Twin Cities, with the legendary Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue as a major character. The movie, which won Prince an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score, follows a thinly-veiled version of the icon, referred to as "The Kid," as he deals with his growing fame amid family and romantic drama. Prince died of an accidental painkiller overdose on April 21, 2016, at his Paisley Park complex in Chanhassen, which has now become a museum in his honor.

Dog Man will battle a cyborg fish in 'Dog Man: The Musical' this winter

The hit book series Dog Man is coming to the stage in the Twin Cities. Hennepin Arts will bring "Dog Man: The Musical" to the Pantages Theatre in Downtown Minneapolis this December, dropping Dav Pilkey's half-dog, half-man into the real world. The show from TheaterWorksUSA, which premiered in 2019, will have five shows over two days on Dec. 6 and 7, about a year after the first film based on the series arrived in theaters. Like the film released in January — also based on the book series by the author of Captain Underpants — the musical sees Dog Man attempting to save his city from Flippy the Cyborg Fish and his army of sentient buildings. At the same time, he's contending with Petey, the evil cat, who may or may not have to join forces with Dog Man. Tickets for the five-show run at Pantages will go on sale Friday, Feb. 28 at 10 a.m.

Country music icon Vince Gill has unveiled a more than 30-city summer tour that will include a stop in downtown Minneapolis. Hennepin Arts will bring the 22-time Grammy winner to the Orpheum Theatre on May 22. "All these years later, it feels as special today as it ever did.' He'll be joined for the tour by an eight-piece band that includes Tom Bukovac (guitar), Eddie Dunlap (steel guitar), Jedd Hughes (guitar, vocals), John Jarvis (keyboards), Wendy Moten (vocals), Jimmie Lee Sloas (bass), Billy Thomas (drums), and Jeff White (guitar, vocals). Tickets for Gill's performance at the Orpheum go on sale Friday, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m.
