Coon Rapids man charged in shooting at UMN after Wayzata graduation

A Coon Rapids man has been charged in a shooting that injured two people Friday on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis after a high school graduation ceremony. Hamza Abdirashid Said, 20, was charged with first-degree assault causing great bodily harm, second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a machine gun. According to the criminal complaint, at least one of the victims appeared to be an innocent bystander gathered with his family outside Mariucci Arena after the Wayzata High School graduation ceremony. Few details were available about the second victim. Both of the men who were shot, ages 49 and 19, were released from the hospital on Sunday. The criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County gave the following details about the shooting: When officers arrived they found a man who had been shot in the head and had blood spurting from the wound. The man told police he had been standing outside the arena after the graduation ceremony with his family when a group behind him began to argue. After hearing a gunshot, he and his family ran for cover away from the group and toward Oak Street. About 20 yards into his escape he felt a burning sensation on his head. When he reached to touch his head, he realized it was covered in blood. He then collapsed. He remained conscious as people around him performed first aid. He said his right arm was also numb at the time. He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center and a CT scan showed he had a fractured skull and brain bleed. The area where the bullet struck him controlled the right side of his body and it was why he could not feel his arm. Officers found a second victim, who had been shot in the upper leg and thigh area. A tourniquet was put on the leg and he was taken to the hospital, as well. He did not cooperate with police, the complaint said. Surveillance video captured the shooting from above. It showed several males running out of the southbound doors of the arena. At one point, a man reached into his waistband and drew a gun, firing multiple rounds. Everyone around the group ducked or ran. The shooter jumped over some bushes and fled, ditching the gun and shedding an outer layer of clothing and a mask. Investigators later found the weapon, a Glock 17 that had been converted to fire as an automatic weapon. Shortly after, they arrested Said. Investigators are still determining whether he was inside the arena during the graduation ceremony. He remains in custody. Collision at Farmington intersection kills motorcyclist, injures 2

A 25-year-old motorcyclist died and a driver of an SUV and his passenger were injured Tuesday in a collision at an intersection in Farmington, police said. Tyler Wrobel, of Farmington, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 4:15 p.m. at 212th Street West and Dushane Parkway, Farmington police said. Police said Wednesday an initial investigation indicates 82-year-old Earl Schlotman of Farmington was driving a 2006 Ford Freestyle westbound on 212th Street West and began making the turn onto southbound Dushane Parkway, crossing into the path of Wrobel, who was headed eastbound on 212th Street. The motorcycle struck the passenger side of the SUV. Schlotman's wife, Janice Schlotman, also 82, was in the front seat and suffered serious injuries. She was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Earl Schlotman was transported by ambulance to Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville with minor injuries. Wrobel was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said. 'This investigation is in the early stages, and we have made no determinations as to the cause of this tragic crash,' Deputy Police Chief Nate Siem said in a written statement. 'Our heartfelt condolences go out to Mr. Wrobel's family, and we wish the Schlotmans a speedy recovery.' Over 200 Hennepin County physicians certified as first to unionize in Minnesota

Around 250 doctors at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) have been certified as the first unionized resident and fellow physicians in Minnesota, according to union officials. The physicians are represented by the Committee of Interns and Residents, a local of the Service Employees International Union (CIR/SEIU), who said the Minnesota Bureau of Mediation Services made the certification on April 3. Officials say doctors leading the organizing effort will be calling on Hennepin Healthcare to begin negotiations for a first contract. The union says physicians are dealing with long work hours and insufficient pay and benefits. "Hennepin residents and fellows treat many patients facing structural inequities in care, including folks without insurance, working class patients of color, immigrant patients and Native American patients traveling from reservations," union officials said in a release on Thursday. "Physicians say winning a fair contract will help ensure that Hennepin can attract doctors who reflect the diversity of the patients they serve." WCCO has reached out to Hennepin Healthcare for comment but has not heard back. Last month, nearly 1,000 University of Minnesota doctors filed for union recognition with CIR/SEIU. The union represents more than 37,000 interns, residents and fellows in 10 states and Washington, D.C.

Apple Valley man arrested in fatal Bloomington hit-and-run

An Apple Valley man has been arrested after police believe he fatally struck a 21-year-old in Bloomington with his SUV on Thursday night shortly after the two met up to complete a sale of unknown goods. Officers about 8:45 p.m. were sent to the 8300 block of 11th Avenue, a residential neighborhood on the city's east side, on a call of an injured person lying in the street. They found a man with critical injuries and medics transported him to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, said Bloomington Deputy Police Chief Kim Clauson. Witnesses told police the victim had been talking with someone who was in a vehicle, Clauson said. When the witnesses heard yelling, they went outside and saw the vehicle was gone and the man lying injured in the street. Further investigation led officers to determine the victim had met with the 21-year-old suspect 'possibly to sell the suspect some unknown items,' police said. Police made the arrest early Friday in Apple Valley, Clauson said, adding that Hennepin County prosecutors are considering charges.
