STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS Wild Puppet Episode Took 6 Months to Make — GeekTyrant
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has never shied away from getting a little weird, but the upcoming puppet episode might just take the cake. Captain Pike, Number One, and the rest of the Enterprise crew are turning into full-blown puppets in a wild and ambitious episode that's already making waves before it even airs. And this isn't just some quick gimmick. According to co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers, this puppet-filled episode took over six months to bring to life. He told EW: 'I wanna say there was easily more than six months of work on it.' Fellow showrunner Akiva Goldsman, added: 'Alongside all the other prep meetings for every episode, there was always a separate puppet meeting.' Every week, while planning out space battles and alien diplomacy, the team was also sitting down for what can only be described as the most delightfully bizarre production meetings in Trek history. Myers dove deeper into the process, revealing just how complex and fun this episode turned out to be. 'In production, we'd have long conversations with our director in mind, specifically about how to handle puppets… We had to have a lot of conversations about making puppets. We had to have a lot of conversations about how to handle our crew, because we also have to have a whole crew of puppeteers. It's just like doing a very different type of episode, and it requires a lot of time and care to do it.' This was new territory for everyone involved. While we'll have to wait until season 4 drops in 2026 to experience the episode in full, fans got their first look during SDCC with a brief teaser clip featuring puppet Captain Pike, voiced by Anson Mount, coolly seated on the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise. It's bizarre. It's charming. It's exactly the kind of unexpected twist that makes Strange New Worlds so fun. The cast's reactions to the script say it all. Christina Chong, who plays La'An Noonien-Singh, called the experience of reading it 'insane.' For Jess Bush (Nurse Chapel), it was 'pure joy.' And Rebecca Romijn, who plays Number One, praised it plainly: 'It's an amazing script.' Even with all the technical and creative challenges, Myers said the sheer joy of seeing the final puppets made it all worth it: 'There's so many things that are hard and challenging about this, but then you'd go and look at the puppets and everything was okay.' So, if you've ever wanted your Star Trek with a side of The Muppet Show , this one's for you. It's weird, it's crazy, and I'm sure it'll be awesome. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 is currently airing on Paramount Plus, with new episodes every Thursday. The puppet-packed Season 4 is set to launch in 2026, and fans can also look forward to a fifth and final season that's already been greenlit. Source: Entertainment Weekly

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Showrunners Opened Up About Transforming The Cast Into Puppets For Season 4, And It Involved Talking To Talent From Buffy Spinoff Angel
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Every Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season has come with one episode that has an especially wacky premise. Season 1 had a fairy tale-themed story; Season 2 delivered both the Lower Decks crossover and the franchise's first musical episode; and this week on the 2025 TV schedule, we watched La'an Noonien Singh solving a murder mystery in a prototype of the holodeck for Season 3. As for Season 4, it's been announced that the Strange New Worlds cast will spend some time transformed into puppets. Showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers opened up about the work that's been poured into this upcoming episode, which included getting advice from some talent who worked on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff Angel. While it remains to be seen when Strange New Worlds Season 4 will premiere on the slate of upcoming Star Trek TV shows, the show's cast and crew already have this particular episode in their proverbial rearview mirror. Following the reveal of Anson Mount's Christopher Pike in puppet form at San Diego Comic-Con, Goldsman and Myers revealed to EW that 'there was easily more than six months of work' on this episode, and that 'alongside all the other prep meetings for every episode, there was always a separate puppet meeting.' Then Myers said: I was familiar with how to do some of this stuff. In production, we'd have long conversations with our director in mind, specifically about how to handle puppets.... We had to have a lot of conversations about making puppets. We had to have a lot of conversations about how to handle our crew, because we also have to have a whole crew of puppeteers. It's just like doing a very different type of episode, and it requires a lot of time and care to do it. It's hard enough making a 'normal' episode of Star Trek with the actors just playing their characters normally, but throw puppets into the mix? Yeah, I'm not surprised it took so much extra time, especially factoring in those puppeteers that had to be brought in. The Strange New Worlds puppets were designed by the Jim Henson Creature Workshop, and if this episode is anything like a Muppets production or The Dark Crystal, then new stages likely had to be constructed to accomodate the puppeteers. Paramount Plus: from $7.99 a month/$79.99 a yearIf you're a Star Trek fan, a Paramount+ subscription is a must-have to access both the older shows and most of the newer series released over the last decade, including Strange New Worlds. Opt for its Essential plan or go ad-free and get double the catalog with Showtime through the Premium plan from $12.99 a month. View Deal Of course, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is far from the first TV show to puppetize its cast, with another notable example including the Angel Season 5 episode 'Smile Time.' Henry Alonso Myers got in contact with Angel writer, director and producer Jeffrey Bell to pick his brain about how to tackle this fun premise, with Myers recalling: I had just socially a bunch of conversations with him about how they did it. That turned out to be not just a silly conversation but a very useful conversation. While it remains to be seen when we'll get looks at the other Strange New Worlds characters in puppet form, Akiva Goldsman said that there are 'no words' to describe how Christina Chong's La'an puppet looks. Chong and fellow castmates Jess Bush and Rebecca Romijn all praised the script, making me all the more eager to see how this episode turned out. For now though, I'll just have to make do with watching Puppet Pike say 'Hit it!' and express confusion over where everyone else on the Enterprise bridge went. New episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiere Thursdays on Paramount+. The show has been renewed for a fifth and final season consisting of just six episodes, so I hope Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers find a way to squeeze in a fifth 'special' episode during that shortened run.

How ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' producers held Paramount+ true to the promise of a 5-year mission
Star Trek: The Original Series didn't not get to complete its opening narration's now-legendary promise of a 'five-year mission,' having been canceled just three seasons into its original network run on NBC, from 1966 to 1969. But the showrunners of the current Paramount+ prequel series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, were determined to make good on that promise. During a Zoom interview to discuss SNW's upcoming third season, executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers told Gold Derby that Paramount+ initially wanted to conclude the series at the end of its forthcoming fourth season, currently in production. But the producers gently reminded the streamer of the implicit obligation to longstanding fans of the franchise, which resulted in a more symmetrical mission for the Enterprise and its crew, several of whom go on to serve on the original series under Captain James T. Kirk. More from Gold Derby 'RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 10' recap: Acid Betty strategizes to turn a bottom into a top 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' showrunners and cast on Season 3's Vulcan episode, beaming Scotty aboard, and completing their five-year mission 'Obviously, Henry and I would make the show until we were old — -er — but Paramount+ said, 'OK, we think we're done after four seasons,'' said Goldsman. 'And we were like, 'Yeah, but we made this promise to the fans about how we would get everybody to TOS, so they saw what happened to all these characters.' And they were like, 'Oh, yeah, we did. We were part of that promise, too.'' The streamer swiftly adopted an obliging posture, Goldsman reported. 'They said, 'What do you need to get us there?' And we said, 'It'll take about six episodes to get us right up to where we need to get.' And they were like, 'OK. Go do it.'' The showrunners were thrilled to be able to completely thread the needle between SNW and TOS while also fulfilling that 60-year-old promise of a five-year mission. And Goldman made another promise he plans to deliver on. 'I'll remind you that TOS doesn't begin with Kirk's first mission, but we do end with Kirk's first mission,' he offered portentously, indicating that show will explicitly depict the passing of the baton Enterprise helm from Chris Pike (Anson Mount) to Jim Kirk (played by Paul Wesley on SNW and, of course, William Shatner in TOS). Goldsman broadly suggests — or maybe even hints — that there may be more stories to tell in the transitioning period between Enterprise crews, and indeed there remains the possibility of further depicting Kirk's early command period, even telling tales set in between the 79 established missions of TOS, weaving in nuances from what we now know about Spock, Uhura, Scotty, and other legacy characters featured on SNW. "It would be remiss of me not to say that we do in fact have a bunch of sets and a bunch of actors, all of whom and all of which could combine very nicely to continue on,' said Goldsman. 'But I leave that to the powers that be.' Meanwhile, the big-picture future of the iconic TV and film franchise that veritably defined science fiction storytelling in popular culture is looking a bit unclear: although Paramount+ does have Star Trek: Starfleet Academy in the wings, expected to premiere sometime within the year. But the streamer recently brought Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks to somewhat premature, if not unceremonious, conclusions. Goldsman insisted he doesn't have any inside information on exactly where the franchise might be headed next. 'Honestly, I don't know. The future of Star Trek is above my pay grade. The future of this show is we're ending after our Season 5.' Star Trek: Strange New Worlds EPs Tease Spock and Chapel's Future — Does He Have a New Love Interest?
Warning: This post contains spoilers from Season 3, Episode 2 of . Spock's heart was shattered — if Vulcan hearts can even shatter, that is — this week on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. But a fellow Enterprise crew member may be about to mend that heart. More from TVLine Star Trek: Strange New Worlds EP Breaks Down Pike's Emotional Struggle in Premiere: 'It's an Opportunity for Him to Dig Deeper' It's Official: Samuel L. Jackson to Star in Tulsa King Spinoff NOLA King at Paramount+ - See First Photo Evil Cast, Creators Still 'Sit Around and Talk About It Endlessly,' Aasif Mandvi Says - See Reunion Photo In Season 3's second episode (which hit Paramount+ on Thursday), Spock was excited to welcome Chapel back after her fellowship, but she didn't return alone: She was accompanied by her dashing new boyfriend, Dr. Roger Korby, played by Cillian O'Sullivan. Spock had trouble processing her new romance — it's not logical! — but after a mischievous alien created an alternate reality where Spock and Chapel were about to be married, Spock realized it wasn't right and did the noble thing, reuniting her with Korby. So now that they're no longer a romantic item, what's next for Spock and Chapel as shipmates? 'They will have to interact,' executive producer Henry Alonso Myers tells TVLine, and 'that interaction will be dramatic, no matter what… We promise you that those great dramatic and comic scenes between them will continue on. Just because we end that particular romantic part of their relationship doesn't mean that there aren't future interesting parts of the relationship that you're gonna run right into the face of.' Spock and Chapel have 'a very complex relationship that they don't always spend enough time talking about,' Myers points out, 'and that's part of the challenge that they run into.' Fellow EP Akiva Goldsman adds that 'we love the characters [of Spock and Chapel], and so they're going through a thing, you know. It's hard.' What might make it easier, though, is a new romantic prospect for Spock, and we saw some hints of that in his interactions with security officer La'an in Episode 2. (We're not the only ones who felt a vibe from those dance lessons, right?) Spock and La'an's connection is 'more casual, and more grown-up,' Myers notes. 'They come into it very much like adults who appreciate what they have to offer each other. They're friends first, I would say.' But maybe not just friends in the end, we're thinking. Are you liking the idea of Spock and La'an together? Or are you still holding out hope for a rekindling with Chapel? Beam down to the comments to give us your thoughts.
