Netflix's Surprising New No. 2 Show Is An Overlooked Canadian Drama
Sullivan's Crossing Netflix certainly can throw some curveballs at you, and one thing it does every so often is take an old show or movie almost no one has heard of and suddenly make it one of the most-viewed offerings in the country. Now, that's happened with Sullivan's Crossing. Sullivan's Crossing has just debuted in Netflix's top 10 list at #2, behind only Squid Game, something it was never going to top. You will notice that it does not have the Netflix original badge, and in fact, has traveled through two different broadcast networks to get here, Canada's CTV and the CW. Here's the synopsis: 'Adapted from the New York Times bestselling novels by Robyn Carr, "Sullivan's Crossing" follows the journey of neurosurgeon Maggie Sullivan, whose perfectly planned life is turned upside down after finding herself in unexpected legal troubles.' 'Needing time to reflect, she temporarily leaves her life in Boston and takes refuge in her childhood home of Sullivan's Crossing, a campground in picturesque Nova Scotia that is run by her estranged father, Sully. There, she must deal with her complicated present while she also navigates her painful past. Further complicating matters is a mysterious newcomer whose presence ultimately leads Maggie to question her carefully laid plans.' Sullivan's Crossing What's the deal with this show? When I say overlooked, I suppose it's watched enough to get three seasons. But in the public eye? This is a series that has a 60% on Rotten Tomatoes for season 1 from just five reviews and an 80% audience score from less than fifty reviews from viewers. Seasons 2 and 3 don't even have enough reviews for a score at all. You will no doubt recognize at least one member of the cast, One Tree Hill's Chad Michael Murray, who plays the lead in the series. I have never seen Maggie Sullivan herself, Morgan Kohan, in anything else, but clearly, she's doing well here. There seems to be some sort of staggered deal where the show first airs on CTV, then moves to the CW, then arrives on Netflix through a licensing deal. Two seasons are on Netflix now, and it's not clear when season 3, which ended just two weeks ago in June, will make its way to the service. And yes, the show has been renewed for season 4. So despite few ratings, it's certainly being watched. And now a whole lot more people are watching since it's ranking this high on Netflix. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram. So, ‘Squid Game' Season 4? Don't Rule It Out
Squid Game Squid Game has ended with its somewhat odd, six-episode season that essentially operates as the other half of season 2, just with a season 3 badge. It is a pretty conclusive end to the current arc, but this is the modern streaming era. This is Netflix. This is a showrunner that is getting paid millions upon millions to make this series. So no, we can't rule out a season 4 of Squid Game. This is not just random speculation, but it comes from creator Hwang Dong-hyuk himself in a recent interview with EW. It's mainly about another season that's a prequel, which wouldn't be labeled season 4, I'm guessing, but he also speaks to that as well. Here's his pitch for that: So, that's an intermission between seasons 1 and 2, and if that did end up existing, a series without an actual Squid Game being played, it would probably just be called 'Squid Game: Gi-hun" or something like that. The advantage there would be that it would bring back some of its cast. You also might think it could do something like provide out-of-game backstories for some of season 2 and 3's players. But a sequel? Season 4? Not ruled out either: Squid Game This is not a question of whether or not Netflix would agree to this. They would in a second. Squid Game season 1 remains the most-watched show in Netflix history. Season 2 didn't get that high, but it's still in the top 5. Season 3 could go up or down, we'll see. But it will be high, and Netflix, of course, is going to want any more Squid Game projects they can get their hands on, especially if the original creator is willing to return, as he's the key to the whole idea. Regardless, if this does manifest, it will almost certainly be years until we see something new from Squid Game. It's taken us almost four years to get through three seasons (sort of two), and these ideas are still nebulous and not in production. But like Hwang, we shouldn't rule it out. ‘The Bear' Season 4 Is Just An Endless String Of Emmy Bait Clips
The Bear The Bear season 4 has dropped this week, and while there's no confirmation yet that it will return for season 5, the cliffhanger finale makes it pretty clear that will happen, no matter the viewership or reception for this season. And at this point, I'd say that season should probably be its last. It's true that The Bear season 4 may be somewhat better than the much-derided season 3, but it's also exhausting, with characters either shoved to the side or forced to retread the same story beats over and over again from past seasons. Or even within this season. Spoilers follow. What takes up a sizable amount of space are these intense, one-on-one, hyper zoomed-in conversations between characters, including the entire finale. While this is not new to the show it's used so often that it's almost a parody of itself. Yes, these actors are talented, but these scenes feel like pure Emmy bait over and over and over. Here's Carmy and Sydney having an intense conversation. Here's Carmy and his mom having an intense conversation. Here's Carmy and Ritchie having an intense conversation. Here's Carmy and Claire having an intense conversation. Here's Carmy and Sydney and Ritchie having an intense conversation (the entire finale). Almost all of these involve crying. Mix and match most of the characters from the show, and this feels like half the runtime. The Bear The story of the actual restaurant takes a back burner (no pun intended). Tina's entire storyline this season is trying to figure out how to make a pasta dish in under three minutes. Marcus is being slow at making desserts but then his pastry friend Will Poulter returns. He then wins a best young chef award out of nowhere. Sydney pretends like she's going to leave The Bear for eight episodes when we know she obviously won't. I thought the most interesting storyline was Ebraheim seemingly figuring out how to save the restaurant behind the scenes by expanding the beef sandwich side of the business, but just when that's starting to get interesting, the cliffhanger finale shuts it all down. I appreciated that there were less screaming kitchen fights this time around, but Carmy having eight conversations that are some variant of 'I don't know how to exist, I don't know who I am, and I wronged you' gets very old, and again, we've been doing this dance for years now. I do think The Bear should return for season 5, as it simply cannot end after that season 4 finale. But they need to get their head on straight and focus less on tearful Emmy monologues and more on the actual story and getting these characters unstuck. The Ending Of Netflix's ‘The Survivors' Is Really Quite Bad
The Survivors Netflix's new mystery, The Survivors, still has retained its 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, but I'm having a hard time agreeing with that now that I've reached the end. While I was compelled to keep watching over the course of the series, it began to fall apart and, by the end, did not work at all. Here are the issues I had with the ending of The Survivors: The Survivors The end result of all this is…a young girl died in a cave because of the tide. Two boys died in a storm. A girl was murdered because there was a remote chance she might find where the girl died. This isn't satisfying, I'm sorry. This seemed a lot more interesting than it eventually ended up being, and I wouldn't recommend this over, say, Secrets We Keep or Dept. Q on Netflix. Watch those instead. ‘MindsEye' Promises Huge Fixes As Its Playercount Flatlines
MindsEye MindsEye is quickly becoming a cautionary tale including lessons like 'talent doesn't mean results' and 'combative execs do harm,' but the game is attempting to salvage its disastrous launch with an announced plan for fixes. On Twitter this morning, MindsEye published a lengthy blog post about its current priorities that mainly revolve around performances and bug fixes. An excerpt: The way the game performs and its litany of bugs are only part of its problems, however, another fundamental one being that the game simply is not good, and there's no patch for that. The last 24 hours has brought situations like streamers cracking up while attempting to deliver a sponsored pitch for the game, or major streamers seeing their #ad deals scrapped by the publisher minutes before they were supposed to play. FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder While you may understand why after all the work to build the game, MindsEye devs do not want to give up on it, it feels far too late to salvage. It did not have a strong launch, peaking at just 3,300 concurrent players on Steam, keeping in mind this is a game from a guy who was a lead on the GTA series for years upon years. But after that launch (and a number of refunds), the playercount is already starting to flatline. Literally: MindsEye It lost around 60% of its players by just day two, and looks to be even lower today as the heartbeat slows and likely will stop soon enough here. It's a miss. I've seen games that can forge a path to redemption but this is just not going to be one of them. This isn't Cyberpunk 2077 where a game anticipated for a decade arrives with 10 million sales and early problems kick the studio into high gear to fix everything. This is a game barely anyone played that no one will give a second look at after this week, patches or no. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.
