VFW preparing to open new canteen
For the last three years, a group of veterans in Daviess County have been like nomads. They would get together once in a while in different places, but what they were looking for was their own home. Now, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars are closing in on opening a new canteen. 'We have a place and we are getting it ready to go. We have done some repairs and some cosmetic updates. We are hoping to get the roof repaired this week. We are hoping to open really soon, but we thought we would be done two months ago,' said VFW Quartermaster Leslie Heshelman. 'We have our sign done. The next step will be to get it put on the building.' The VFW spent decades near the intersection of Main and Meridian streets, before selling the building because of the cost of upkeep. After a long search the organization is returning to Main Street. 'We are going to be right next door to the movie theater. Years ago, it was Carlton Jewelry, then it was a restaurant and most recently a vape shop,' said Heshelman. 'It's just slow going. We don't have unlimited funds and that leaves us relying on volunteer labor. Not everybody is retired or able to work like they used to.' The VFW appears to have a pending approval for a liquor license. Heshelman says that even after opening they hope to expand what they can offer. 'We are going to be non-smoking. We want it to be family friendly. We will have a bar and will serve alcohol and non-alcohol drinks. We will not have a full-service kitchen when we open but we will have snacks and small food items for sale,' she said. 'We may someday open a kitchen but we don't have the funds to meet all of the requirements for that yet.' Heshelman says the three years without a home base has been difficult on the members and the organization. 'Three years without a building. You lose connection to people without a physical building. We have comrades and acquaintances and without a place to gather we have just lost touch,' she said. 'That is one reason we want to be family friendly is to bring all of those people back and hopefully provide that comradery to younger folks with families.' VFW leaders say they are hopeful to get into the new facility, and when that happens, they intend to try and improve the outreach to veterans who might not have been involved with the organization over the years. 'We are pleased with the progress and are excited to see the work finished and the VFW open. I hope our members are pleased,' said Heshelman. 'We would love to have any vets, young or old. There is so much more stuff the VFW offers than just a canteen. There's some legislation to provide more services to our vets and our VFW will provide a strong roll in that. When our numbers are up it gives our legislative team a lot more leverage in meeting with our members of congress. We are here to serve the vets of all ages and we want to get that word out to young and old.'
