Britain's booming housing markets: Rightmove reveals 10 areas where sales have skyrocketed
Some parts of Britain saw property sales almost double in the last year, new data has revealed. May 2025 saw the largest number of agreed property sales out of any month since March 2022, according to Rightmove - and property portal Rightmove has named the towns which have seen the biggest spike. May is typically a busy point in the year for agreed sales, which is when an offer has been made and accepted. However, this year's figure reflects an improvement in housing market conditions, according to Rightmove. Across the UK, the number of sales agreed is now 6 per cent ahead of the same period last year. However, this trend is more prominent in some areas than others. In Wales, the number of sales being agreed is 15 per cent higher than at this time last year, whereas in London the figure is just 1 per cent higher. Heywood is property hotspot May's sales hotspot is Heywood in Manchester, with 88 per cent more buyers agreeing a deal to purchase than this time last year. Next is Pudsey in West Yorkshire, where there has been 85 per cent more property sales agreed year-on-year. Wilmslow in Cheshire has also seen a surge in activity with a two thirds increase in sales compared to May last year. These areas are doing well as buyers are looking for both affordability and value, according to Colleen Babcock, a property expert at Rightmove. She says that while mortgage rates have come down significantly from the peak, they are only slightly down from this time last year. Nine out of the top ten sales hotspots in May have an average price tag below the current national average. 'This month's hotspots reflect broader market trends driven by affordability and attractive property prices,' said Babcock. 'With mortgage rates higher than the lows we saw post financial crisis, and affordability stretched, many buyers are continuing to look for value, which is likely reflected in the lower than average prices of some of the current hotspots. 'With the overall number of sellers continuing to run at a decade-high, sellers need to also be mindful of the competition they might face from other sellers trying to secure a buyer in their area. 'Working with a local agent to price realistically and competitively for that market, rather than pricing too high, is one way to increase the likelihood of a successful sale.' Where do the Badgers go after losing key starter to torn ACL?
The Wisconsin Badgers faced some difficult news on Tuesday, as head coach Luke Fickell announced that starting left tackle Kevin Heywood will 'probably' be out for the season after tearing his ACL. 'Obviously, I think he's gonna have to have surgery,' Fickell said about Heywood. 'We're probably going to lose him and probably not going to get him back obviously, even for the season. So that was one that's going to be really difficult and tough, but, it's also a part of the game.' Advertisement The news deals a huge blow to Wisconsin's offensive line, which went injury-free in 2024 and was the biggest key to the offense. Heywood was expected to spell multi-year starter Jack Nelson as the blindside protector, and was one of the Badgers' most heralded recruits in their 2024 recruiting class. However, he's expected to miss the season, leaving the Badgers scrambling in the middle of spring ball, as they're now thinner on the offensive line, especially at tackle. 'As we came out today, it was a little bit less emotion and energy than I wanted,' Fickell said. 'And we actually ended a little bit early just because the sheer fact of, you know, we weren't going to go a two-minute situation there at the end. It's just as you start to get a little bit thin up front on the offensive line. 'But we got to continue... This is a grown man's league and we got to prepare and practice like grow men. And I know that's hard.' Advertisement Wisconsin is now in uncharted territory, which means reserves will have to step up into bigger roles. Who are some of the names that are poised for bigger roles? 'We've been fortunate up front in the last two seasons to have those guys prepared and be able to last through the season,' Fickell said about the offensive line. 'Now, we got to have to figure out how we're going to manage some of that and move some guys around and expect some other guys to step up, whether it's Leyton Nelson and Emerson Mandel, and guys like that that got to step in.' Nelson has been the swing tackle in camp, even taking reps with the first-team offense to spell one of the starting tackles at times this spring. He took first-team reps at left tackle on Tuesday with Heywood out. Advertisement Mandel, on the other hand, has been competing at right guard, and could end up as Wisconsin's starter at the position if he wins the battle over J.P. Benzschawel and Kerry Kodanko. Wisconsin also could turn to other options, such as moving Joe Brunner to left tackle or even Riley Mahlman over to the left side. But, there is a difficulty with making such a change, which is why Fickell is hoping that other players step up into a bigger role. 'There's plenty of ability to move right now in where we are offensively and what we want to continue to do,' Fickell said when asked about the possibility of moving Mahlman or Brunner over. 'It's really difficult to do that even [with] a Riley [Mahlman] or a Joe [Brunner] at this moment. 'Like, we have to give other guys opportunities to step up. You know, they've been here for a while. They deserve, you know, that chance and that opportunity. And then as we get into the summer, we'll figure out how we're going to be able to fit that and what's going to be best for us because, you got a lot of time to get guys into positions. To me, it's still about understanding the hole and making sure we're not taking a step backwards when you have injuries. So we'll move forward.' Advertisement The Badgers had a number of questions entering the spring with their new-look roster and a tough schedule ahead of them in 2025. Now, they've got one more added to the mix and it's a big one with the loss of Heywood, likely for the season. More from

BREAKING: Wisconsin football key offensive starter out for 2025 season with ACL injury
Projected starting left tackle Kevin Heywood will miss the 2025 Wisconsin football season with an ACL injury, Badgers coach Luke Fickell shared on Tuesday. The news is a substantial blow to the Badgers' chances this season, especially with the team set to face what is projected to be one of the nation's toughest schedules. Heywood was the team's clear replacement for standout left tackle Jack Nelson, who is off to the NFL after anchoring the offensive line the past few seasons. Advertisement Heywood, only sophomore, was one of Luke Fickell's biggest recruiting wins in the class of 2024. He joined the program as 247Sports' No. 50 player in the country, No. 4 offensive tackle and No. 1 player from his home state of Pennsylvania. He chose the program over offers from Georgia, Notre Dame, Alabama and Michigan, plus other top contenders Auburn, Kentucky and USC. The Royersford, Pennsylvania, took little time before backing up his top-end recruiting billing upon arriving in Madison. He was the team's backup left tackle as a true freshman in 2024 and he saw action in all 12 games, primarily on special teams. Heywood was one of Wisconsin's write-in offensive line starters entering 2025, next to returning starters Joe Brunner (left guard), Jake Renfro (center) and Riley Mahlman (right tackle). Together, the unit was projected to be a strength as first-year offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes installs his scheme and identity. Now, the team has a glaring need at one of the most important positions on the field. Next on the roster's depth chart are Leyton Nelson, a former Vanderbilt transfer who missed the 2024 season with a knee injury, and Emerson Mandell, a redshirt freshman and former four-star recruit. The program can return to the transfer portal to bolster the position. The spring window set to open on Wednesday. Advertisement Not much is trending positively for the Badgers at this stage of the spring. Heywood is lost for the season and starting tight end Tanner Koziol is reportedly set to enter the portal. Fickell and his staff will have their work cut out to recraft the offensive line and prepare the unit for success after a poor two seasons under Phil Longo. Kevin Heywood has ACL injury as Wisconsin loses its projected starting left tackle
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin offensive tackle Kevin Heywood is expected to miss all of the upcoming season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in spring practice. Heywood, the Badgers' projected starter at left tackle, hurt his knee in practice. Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell revealed the severity of the injury. 'That was one that's going to be really difficult and tough, but it's also part of the game,' Fickell said. 'We've been fortunate up front in the last two seasons to have those guys prepared and be able to last through the season. Now we're going to have to figure out how we're going to manage some of that and move some other guys around and expect some other guys to step up, whether it's Leyton Nelson, an Emerson Mandell, guys like that have got to step in.' Wisconsin had benefited from remarkable stability on its offensive line during the first two years of Fickell's tenure. The Badgers had the same starting offensive line for each of its 12 games last year, with Jack Nelson at left tackle, Joe Brunner at left guard, Jake Renfro at center, Joe Huber at right guard and Riley Mahlman at right tackle. Brunner, Renfro and Mahlman are back this year. Wisconsin also had the same starting offensive line for all 12 of its regular-season games in 2023, with Nelson at left tackle, Huber at left guard, Tanor Bortolini at center, Michael Furtney at right guard and Mahlman at right tackle. The only change that season came in the ReliaQuest Bowl loss to LSU, with Renfro getting to start after missing the entire regular season with an injury to his lower left leg. Heywood was expected to take over this season for Nelson, who had started at left tackle each of the last three years. Heywood had participated in all 12 games for Wisconsin last year while playing special teams and making occasional appearances on offense. His injury represents a setback for a Wisconsin team seeking to bounce back after its streak of 22 consecutive winning seasons and bowl appearances ended last year. The Badgers finished 5-7 last season and lost their final five games.
