BREAKING: Wisconsin football key offensive starter out for 2025 season with ACL injury

Yahoo25-04-2025

Projected starting left tackle Kevin Heywood will miss the 2025 Wisconsin football season with an ACL injury, Badgers coach Luke Fickell shared on Tuesday.
The news is a substantial blow to the Badgers' chances this season, especially with the team set to face what is projected to be one of the nation's toughest schedules. Heywood was the team's clear replacement for standout left tackle Jack Nelson, who is off to the NFL after anchoring the offensive line the past few seasons.

Heywood, only sophomore, was one of Luke Fickell's biggest recruiting wins in the class of 2024. He joined the program as 247Sports' No. 50 player in the country, No. 4 offensive tackle and No. 1 player from his home state of Pennsylvania. He chose the program over offers from Georgia, Notre Dame, Alabama and Michigan, plus other top contenders Auburn, Kentucky and USC.
The Royersford, Pennsylvania, took little time before backing up his top-end recruiting billing upon arriving in Madison. He was the team's backup left tackle as a true freshman in 2024 and he saw action in all 12 games, primarily on special teams.
Heywood was one of Wisconsin's write-in offensive line starters entering 2025, next to returning starters Joe Brunner (left guard), Jake Renfro (center) and Riley Mahlman (right tackle). Together, the unit was projected to be a strength as first-year offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes installs his scheme and identity.
Now, the team has a glaring need at one of the most important positions on the field.
Next on the roster's depth chart are Leyton Nelson, a former Vanderbilt transfer who missed the 2024 season with a knee injury, and Emerson Mandell, a redshirt freshman and former four-star recruit. The program can return to the transfer portal to bolster the position. The spring window set to open on Wednesday.

Not much is trending positively for the Badgers at this stage of the spring. Heywood is lost for the season and starting tight end Tanner Koziol is reportedly set to enter the portal. Fickell and his staff will have their work cut out to recraft the offensive line and prepare the unit for success after a poor two seasons under Phil Longo.

Isaiah Adams appears to be on track to be Arizona Cardinals' starting right guard

Isaiah Adams appears to be on track to be Arizona Cardinals' starting right guard After starting the final five games of last season, the 2024 third-round draft pick seems to be the plan at right guard. One of the positional questions for the Arizona Cardinals in their starting lineup is at right guard. Will Hernandez remains a free agent and perhaps could return after he has fully recovered from his torn ACL, but we do appear to have some answers for the position. Manning the first-team right guard position is 2024 third-round pick Isaiah Adams. While head coach Jonathan Gannon has not said that specifically, we do have references to it. Starting center Hjalte Froholdt, who spoke to reporters after Wednesday's practice, referred to the offensive line's need to be consistent, whether it is with "Evan and Isaiah right now, or if someone else comes in there." Evan is, of course, Evan Brown, their starting left guard. Isaiah would be Isaiah Adams. Froholdt is happy with what Adams has done so far. Adams started the final five games of the season at right guard, and Froholdt noted how important that experience was for him. "I think Zay has done a tremendous job," he said. "I think he got thrown a little bit into the fire last year, and what better way than just to get tossed in there. It's the best. You make some mistakes and learn from it, so I think that having those opportunities last year has made him such a better player this year." Froholdt continued. "He's a big strong dude. It's nice being in there with him. He plays long. He's smart. He's good to communicate. He understands it, so it's been really good to see what Isaiah has been doing so far." While one might say that it is only minicamp, this is true, and things could change. However, In each of the last two offseasons under Gannon as head coach, they have identified their first-team offensive line in the offseason program to get them working together with consistency and chemistry. In 2023, when left guard was a question, Elijah Wilkinson was with the first team and started the games when he was healthy. Last year, after they signed Brown and it was uncertain where he would play after being a starting center and starting right guard for the previous three seasons for the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks, he was put in immediately at left guard and he played almost every snap of the season there. So having Adams at right guard now is a good sign that he is pegged as the team's starter for the regular season. The San Francisco 49ers have already made one major change to their receiving corps this offseason and now a second move has been urged, but one that would reel in a much greater reward. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Francisco 49ers reevaluated their needs at wide receiver earlier this offseason and came out with some major takeaways. Namely, they moved to get younger and cheaper at the position, trading former No. 1 receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. Advertisement Certainly a bold move on their part, general manager John Lynch has remained steadfast in his commitment to adapt this group while easing the burden on their cap. That line of decision making raised questions about the team's intentions with their new No. 1 Brandon Aiyuk. San Francisco has not been shy about their new strategy, so there has been some sentiment to trading Aiyuk. However, Niners insider Grant Cohn has taken that a step further, urging the team to to work with the Commanders again. This time they would send Aiyuk and return Terry McLaurin in the deal. "McLaurin is older than Aiyuk, but he's also faster than Aiyuk and might have a better relationship with the quarterback. I'm guessing McLaurin would love to play for the 49ers if they extend him. And I'm guessing Aiyuk would love to play with Daniels and Deebo Samuel in Washington." Advertisement Much of that projection involves Aiyuk's relationship with Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels who happens to be a very close friend. But a straight-up swap for the two players is not happening. While McLaurin's contract disputes with the team has led to a holdout from mandatory minicamp, trading him away would seem an egregious error for a team on the rise. He consistently posts 1,000 yards and comes off arguably his best campaign yet. Daniels and Aiyuk may have a strong relationship, but sacrificing an arguable top 10 receiver for a player coming off a serious ACL injury makes for an extremely high risk. For the Niners, McLaurin would be great to have in a vacuum. But any trade that happens will still need his extension situation sorted out afterward. The Niners have committed big money to several players this offseason and this would be another. Advertisement McLaurin will likely demand a salary well over $30 million per year and higher than the number Aiyuk sits at now. Pulling off such a trade essentially puts them in the same place financially with a longer commitment to an older receiver. More likely than not, Washington will eventually meet their star at the negotiating table and get a new deal done. Updated WNBA Power Rankings Make Clear Choice Between Indiana Fever, Chicago Sky

Updated WNBA Power Rankings Make Clear Choice Between Indiana Fever, Chicago Sky originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark and Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese have quickly become two of the league's biggest names, drawing national attention to each of their respective franchises. Advertisement The Fever and Sky first faced off in the season opener on May 17, with Indiana winning convincingly at home (93-58), led by Clark's triple-double (20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists). During the game, she was assessed a flagrant one foul after making excessive contact with Reese while defending a second-chance opportunity. In their second matchup Saturday night, Indiana played short-handed as Clark was sidelined with a quad strain. Despite the circumstances, the Sky failed to defend their home floor, with no player scoring in double figures. The Fever won that one, too, by a score of 79-52. Advertisement The Fever, previously ranked ninth, moved up three spots to sixth after capturing back-to-back wins this week over the Washington Mystics and the Sky. The Fever now hold a record of 4-4 after losing three straight. As for the Sky, they previously ranked eighth and shifted down four spots to twelfth after losing their only game of the week to none other than the Fever. They now sit at 1-7 on the year and will be without veteran playmaker Courtney Vandersloot for the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL against Indiana.
