Alabama football starters named to 2025 Comeback Player of the Year watch list
Fifth-year senior linebacker Deontae Lawson and junior defensive back Keon Sabb both made the list a year after injuries cut short their respective seasons a year ago.
Lawson sustained a season-ending ACL injury in Alabama's 24-3 loss at Oklahoma on Nov. 23. In 11 games last season, he was second on the team in tackles with 76 (36 solo) and had seven tackles for loss, two sacks, four pass breakups, an interception and a forced fumble.
Lawson was also named to the preseason watch list for the 2025 Bednarik Award, as well as the Butkus Award and Nagurski Trophy.
Sabb, who officially transferred to Alabama from Michigan in February 2024, got off to a promising start last year but was limited to seven starts after a season-ending foot injury in Alabama's 24-17 loss at Tennessee on Oct. 19.
Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kane Wommack praised Sabb for being ahead of schedule earlier this month after fall camp opened.
"Keon is doing a really good job," Wommack said back on Aug. 2. "He has really pushed. Our training staff's done a great job with him. I think he's ahead of really every marker that we had in the offseason for him, and we weren't sure if he was going to be able to go to the level that he's going right now at the beginning of fall camp, but he is and he's here.
"I don't know if I could put a number on it exactly, but he's out there playing with our guys, so he's comfortable enough to be able to do that," Wommack added. "Sometimes those injuries, you just have to build a callous of coming back and I think that's something he's really pushing himself to right now to get ready for the season."
Sabb recorded 39 tackles (24 solo), one tackle for loss, four pass breakups and two interceptions a year ago. Both interceptions came in the Crimson Tide's season-opening 63-0 win over Western Kentucky on Aug. 31.
About the Comeback Player of the Year Award
The Comeback Player of the Year is presented annually by College Sports Communications in association with the Associated Press (AP) and the Fiesta Bowl.
Per the award's official website:
"Since 2018, the Comeback Player of the Year Award watch list has been comprised of 75 student-athletes who overcame an injury, illness or other circumstance in the previous year. Each player returned to full health for the 2025 season and showcased their skills, helping their teams compete to their highest potential."
Three players were awarded the Comeback Player of the Year in 2024: South Carolina running back Rocket Sanders, Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough, and Utah State defensive back Ike Larsen.

College Football Playoff to tweak the way it evaluates teams during the 2025 season
The College Football Playoff says it's making some changes to the way it evaluates teams during the 2025 college football season. The playoff announced Wednesday that it was making 'enhancements to the tools that the selection committee uses to assess schedule strength and how teams perform against their schedule. The changes come after 9-3 Alabama was the first team left out of the playoff and ended the season ranked ahead of 10-2 Miami. 'The current schedule strength metric has been adjusted to apply greater weight to games against strong opponents,' the playoff's release said. 'An additional metric, record strength, has been added to the selection committee's analysis to go beyond a team's schedule strength to assess how a team performed against that schedule. This metric rewards teams defeating high-quality opponents while minimizing the penalty for losing to such a team. Conversely, these changes will provide minimal reward for defeating a lower-quality opponent while imposing a greater penalty for losing to such a team.' Based on the paragraph above, we're not sure if the playoff committee would have changed the way it ranked anyone in the top 15 a year ago. Though the Crimson Tide beat Georgia, Missouri and LSU, two of its losses were to teams that finished the regular season at 6-6. Alabama's third loss came by 21 points to Oklahoma in the penultimate week of the season. Miami, meanwhile, lost on the road to a 7-5 Georgia Tech team and a 9-3 Syracuse team. The Hurricanes didn't have any wins over teams who were ranked at the time of those games, though Louisville and Duke finished the season at 9-4. The CFP also said that it wouldn't make a rule prohibiting teams' rankings from changing ahead of the final set of rankings if those teams are not playing on conference championship weekend. 'The selection committee reaffirmed that movement in the final week should be evidence-based and did not recommend creating a formal policy prohibiting such movement,' the playoff said. The first set of playoff rankings will be released on Tuesday, Nov. 4 and there will be five sets of rankings before the final rankings that set the playoff field will be released on Sunday, Dec. 7. The top four teams in the 12-team playoff will again get byes this season, though the top four teams will be the top four teams in the rankings, and not the four highest-ranked conference champions.

Aaron Glenn: Jets won't be trading Breece Hall
When it first became clear that the new-look New York Jets will be using a three-man approach to the running back position, speculation emerged that former workhorse Breece Hall could be traded. The Jets are still trying to put that talk to an end. 'We have like three good running backs, and I keep saying that,' coach Aaron Glenn told reporters on Tuesday. 'Listen, they all have different skill sets that we're gonna utilize. And that does not mean that I'm trading Breece. OK? Does not. So, I'm gonna say that right now. I just like having three good guys. Hell, I wish I had more. But we don't.' Hall, a second-round pick from Iowa State, made a quick splash as a rookie. He had 116 rushing yards in an upset over the Packers at Lambeau Field, one week before suffering a season-ending ACL tear in the second quarter of a game in which he already had 72 rushing yards. Hall returned in 2023 to rush for 994 yards, with another 591 receiving yards and nine total touchdowns. Last year, he had 876 rushing yards, 483 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns. He's listed as the starter, with Braelon Allen at No. 2 and Isaiah Davis as the third-stringer. Hall has a base salary of $3.4 million in 2025, the last year of his rookie deal. Scattered rumors have emerged of potential interest in Hall. Some have popped up recently. As the Jets tell it, he won't be going anywhere. Obviously, however, there aren't many truly untradeable players. If someone makes the Jets the right offer, it's possible that they'd accept it.
