Why are we allergic to working together?

That line's been looping in my head for weeks. Not because I've got a '90s playlist on repeat, but because it sums up how I've been feeling about politics lately: drained, cynical, and stuck in a loop. The truth is, I've been in a bit of a rut. Writer's block, political burnout, and a nagging sense of pointlessness. It's political nihilism — that feeling of "what's the point?''. Politics feels less like a forum for ideas and more like a never-ending shouting match. And that's exhausting. But here's the thing: I still care. Underneath the frustration, I believe good people exist across the political spectrum — even if the system they work in is broken. I appreciate National's focus on social investment and focus on productivity growth. I share the Greens' view that we need a serious conversation about wealth tax and capital gains. I'm concerned about losing our strong co-governance and representation of tangata whenua that Labour and Te Pāti Māori led. I can't say I agree with much at all from Act New Zealand, and I find David Seymour's approach particularly offputting. Winston and New Zealand First? He does a good job representing regional New Zealand, even if I disagree with their mining stance. And I wrestle with my own political identity. I'm a capitalist who cares deeply about social justice. I believe in business, innovation and growth — but I also believe in fairness, equality, and community. It shouldn't be a contradiction. Yet our system forces us to pick sides. Which brings me to this: our two-party system is outdated. We inherited it from the UK — a model based on old class divisions, workers v landowners. Over time, it's hardened into tribal warfare. But what if there's another way? Switzerland and Denmark show us how democracy can work differently, and better. Denmark uses proportional representation, meaning no one party rules alone. It forces coalition-building, compromise, and broader representation. Switzerland goes even further with its concordance democracy. All major parties share governance. There is no official opposition. Policy isn't about point-scoring — it's about consensus. Imagine that. These systems aren't perfect, but they work. They're stable. They deliver. Denmark and Switzerland consistently rank among the world's best for GDP per capita, trust in government, education, and social equity. They are capitalist at their core, just like us, but pair market economies with strong public services and a deep commitment to democratic participation. And yet, here in New Zealand, we treat it like a trade-off: you can have strong business, or you can have social support. As if it's either-or. But it's not. If you build trust in the system, spend wisely, and treat people like adults, you can absolutely have both. Both Labour and National have name-dropped Denmark and Switzerland over the years to justify their policies. They also both refer to Singapore a lot, but you can't just cherry-pick tax ideas or social programmes and ignore the structure that makes them possible. These countries succeed because of their systems — collaborative, representative, and built for the long term. If we want what they have, we need more than a few policy tweaks. We need transformation. And they are big on productivity. Switzerland supports startups and small businesses with smart incentives, low red tape, and targeted tax breaks. They've strategically focused on producing high-tech, high-quality and high-value goods, which makes them globally competitive beyond their scale. They apply this to government too: public spending is lean, just over 30% of GDP versus New Zealand's 42.75% in 2024. They recognise that to be globally competitive and fund the social services they care about, everyone needs to work smarter — and work harder too. A recent Reuters article coined it as Swiss Exceptionalism. And speaking of work — politics is work. Hard work. I recently got a photo with Judith Collins, Nicola Willis and Marian Johnson at the NZ Hi-Tech Awards – a celebration of the companies leading New Zealand's productivity battle and generating huge value economically, socially and environmentally. I was proud but I hesitated to share it publicly — not because I was embarrassed, but because I knew it would invite hate. That's how bad things have become. We can't even be seen with politicians without triggering a backlash. When did we get so allergic to respectful disagreement? That moment of hesitation is the inspiration for this piece. For the record, both Judith and Nicola are impressive women. I've spent time with both and really enjoy their company, they're actually human and have great banter. I've also spent time with people in Labour — Jacinda, Rachel Brooking, Grant Robertson, Stuart Nash. All good people. I hope to meet Chloe Swarbrick and Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke sometime too. We have got smart, thoughtful leaders across the board. What if we stopped dividing them into teams and asked them to work together — like an actual team New Zealand? Instead, we've turned politics into a nasty sport. One where politicians are constantly on edge, scared to say the wrong thing. Imagine running a business like that — where your team openly undermines each other and the focus is on tearing people down. You'd go bankrupt. We also need to talk about how politicians behave. We expect our kids to be respectful, empathetic, and composed. Yet we tolerate tantrums and bullying from our elected leaders. Leadership is supposed to mean something. It's not about who can shout the loudest — it's about who can listen, build, and lead by example. I've worked with both Labour and National governments, and I've seen the difference in how they operate. Labour has big ideas — but they often struggle to execute. National is more decisive — but they can seem cold and too commercially focused. Neither is perfect. Both have good people. So why do we keep pretending one side has all the answers? Politics shouldn't be about winning. It should be about solving. We've got problems — big ones. Climate. Healthcare. Housing. Inequality. We won't fix them by yelling. We'll fix them by working together. We need to stop picking sides and start picking values. We need leadership that blends bold ideas with practical action. That builds, not just blames. Are we ready to grow up politically and try something different — or are we just going to keep hitting play on the same old broken record, hoping the next verse sounds better? • Sarah Ramsay is chief executive of United Machinists.

Judges said they were impressed by Trimax's continued commitment to innovate and grow in a niche but hugely valuable market. Chief executive Michael Sievwright said Trimax was 'intent' on succeeding internationally. 'We're a proud New Zealand-based exporter, and this award shows what can be achieved by companies based in the Bay of Plenty.' Trimax's revenue had tripled in the past five years, and to date, it has sold more than 33,000 mower decks worldwide. To win Exporter of the Year, Trimax had to have more than five years of international operations and a total annual revenue between $5 million and $50 million. 'We've focused on delivering large strategic projects in key offshore markets', Sievwright said. Trimax Mowing Systems' chief executive, Michael Sievwright. Photo / Supplied Trimax has networks in the United States, the UK, and Australia, with mowers used by groundsmen in locations including England's Windsor Castle and PGA golf courses in the United States. 'The award is recognition for all the hard work our team has done across the board.' Oasis Engineering was recognised with the Excellence in Innovation award for success in the commercialisation of innovation in international markets. Oasis manufactures high-pressure control devices for gases, such as hydrogen and compressed natural gas. Managing director Kevin Flint said the whole business was built on people and innovation. 'We are striving to be a leader in the alternative fuel market.' Flint said everything Oasis did was about innovation, but it was their people who were at the heart of that innovation. 'This award vindicates our determination to be at the forefront of fuelling a greener tomorrow.' An AI-first healthcare operating system took out the award for Best Emerging Business. Carepatron, which launched in 2021, is an AI-driven practice management software platform, helping medical practices manage appointments in person and online. The company has more than 3000 customers across multiple international markets and aims to be the central hub for all administrative and clinical tasks for healthcare providers. Co-founder and chief executive Jamie Frew said receiving the award for Best Emerging Business was 'symbolic but powerful.' Photo / Supplied Carepatron were also a finalist for Best Software at the NZ Hi-Tech Awards, and was highly commended in the Most Innovative Hi-Tech Software Solution section. Sarah Webb and Karl Stevenson were both unanimously presented with the Export Achievement Award by judges. This award recognised an individual who made substantial material contributions to the export success of a business. Karl Stevenson, who is the head of product at BlueLab, said he felt lucky to be part of the Bay of Plenty's export community. 'To be supported and encouraged to share what I've learned over the years, and bring people together to grow, has been a great privilege and something I cherish.' Sarah Webb was the founding force behind LawVu, a provider of a unified, cloud-based legal workspace designed for in-house legal teams. She said she felt honoured to be recognised at the Export Awards. 'I'm incredibly proud and grateful for the dedication and passion our team brings to the table.' Steve Saunders, co-founder and chief executive of Robotics Plus, was recognised as an individual who had made a significant contribution to exporting success in the Bay of Plenty. He is one of the founders of Mount Pack & Coolstores Ltd (MPAC), the largest packhouse in the Bay of Plenty, and served for 12 years with Priority One. 'I am very humbled to receive this award, for me, it's all about the success of the region.' Saunders said he was passionate about the Bay of Plenty and Tauranga and loved the spirit of collaboration that resides in the region. 'It's great to see this region and its people do well.' The awards were organised by the EMA (Employers and Manufacturers Association) on behalf of ExportNZ. Highlights: 23 May, 2025 – SYOS Aerospace took out the top honour at the 2025 NZ Hi-Tech Awards tonight, being named the PwC Hi-Tech Company of the Year. A near record number of attendees in excess of 1000+ came together to celebrate as the Awards marked its 30th anniversary at the TSB Arena in Wellington, which was also attended by a record number of Government Ministers. Mount Maunganui based SYOS Aerospace made a stand out impression on the exclusive panel of international judges with them commenting. ' The company sells its products to government and commercial customers for security, border patrol, surveillance, disaster response, delivery, logistics support, agriculture, and environmental monitoring. The company has shown that you can build big things in small – and pleasant – places. They have made the 'jump' overseas that is critical to getting Kiwi companies to global scale.' Other big winners were The Village Goldsmith and Mindhive Global who both took out two categories each. Mindhive Global who won both the Start-up category and the Agritech category made a significant impact on the judges with their unique combination of known, trusted technology. Their proprietary vision system detects over 25 types of defects in cowhides within seconds, combining machine learning, image recognition, and industrial hardware in a way that's both technically robust and commercially viable. The Village Goldsmith is also disrupting a long-standing industry with its development of a unique platform that allows diamonds to float without visible prongs, claws, or clasps, an innovation recognised globally as the most significant change in diamond solitaire ring design since 1886. Sir Peter Beck was recognised as the 2025 Flying Kiwi and inducted into the NZ Hi-Tech Hall of Fame for taking his company Rocket Lab, from a start-up some 20 years ago to the multi-billion dollar company it is today. At the same time, actively contributing to the development of the Kiwi aerospace industry and personally investing in a number of home-grown start-ups More than 80 local and international judges contributed to the judging of the NZ Hi-Tech Awards which continues to see a year-on-year increase in submissions with an increasingly high calibre to match. Of the 2025 Awards New Zealand Hi-Tech Trust chair Marian Johnson saw the achievement of the Tech sector as a pride that all of Aotearoa could share in despite the last couple of challenging years 'We're witnessing an industry that is continuing exceptional growth as well as innovation and matching it with the best in the world.'
